I was in a GW stockist earlier as I popped in to buy The Fang spray, he said he doesn't have any because GW are not restocking those spray cans (there's a red and green I think as well?) because people can now use the airbrush paints.
If that is true that's annoying. I mean, not so bad for me as I already have an airbrush...feel sorry for those that don't...but its still not going to be as easy or as quick to spray a tank for example.

Other than black and white all the sprays seem to be single production runs that disappear and then may or may not show up again frustrating stuff (although if enough folk handed over £17 for the AoS gold spray we can expect some of the old favorites to show up again at that price)

Pfff that sucks. I found the spray cans dead handy to be honest, especially with the color schemes of the armies I have.

I have switched over to Army Painter color spray primers. About $5 a can cheaper than GW (on the most part), you can even find them cheaper online in some places, and I think they're a better color. I use their skeleton bone as the base coat for my Tau army, and uniform gray for my imperial guard. The GW primers never seemed to match well with the same color from the pots.

There are various ranges of spray can paints on the market. You don't need to depend on GW, and you probably will get the alternatives half as expensive or less.
Montana Gold spray cans are about £5 in the UK, for instance.

For the price of 4 GW spray cans, you can get an airbrush and compressor, and just use regular paint, too
Or heck, if it's the metallic ones, even fewer. The advantage of this is that the colors will match *exactly*, since they're coming out of the same pot of paint.

Limited Edition Paints perhaps? So they force you to repaint your entire army because the colour you painted half it with is no longer available...
Hmm.... now that I think about it haven't they done this like 3 or 4 times in the last 10 years?

"Limited Edition" != "Limited Run".
GW has seemingly done a limited run on some of the colors; with the production run lasting four to five months at shops before the shops can no longer get them.
There are three colors that I'm aware of which fit that description were The Fang and Leadbelcher, with Mephiston Red just recently going to "No Longer Available" status(likely because, as Talys mentioned, they now have an airbrush version of the color as well).
Additionally, The Fang and Leadbelcher both reportedly had issues with the quality of the spray cans varying wildly--so it could have been a quality issue rather than simply limited production.

No. They had the "Edge" paint range, which were Direct Only but that's about the closest thing. Additionally some of the Edge colors have been moved into the Base/Layer range instead.

You mean when Blood Angels went from being red to being orange and then back to being red?
Though I can't say that I have ever bought any GW spray primer - there are better primers for less, and always has been.
Colored primers are another matter - but I find Army Painter works just fine.
The Auld Grump - though I should have bought some of the Tin Bitz primer....

Honestly, I find the hassle of setting up and then thoroughly cleaning my airbrush to be worse than the expense of a spray undercoat, so if I don't intend to airbrush the miniature further then I'd much rather just use a spray can for an undercoat. Army painter make a great variety at a better price than GW, so it's not a huge loss though.

The loss of Leadbelcher spray was devastating for me... It doesn't bother me if GW decides something is a limited run but they need to say as much more so with paints... I have half an Iron Warrior army I need to get back to.

GW colored primers have always been a single run, they have never kept them around long term as they don't sell well enough to warrant it.
I gave up on spray cans years ago, I find using a cheapo $12 single action airbrush with Vallejo primer to be more reliable and massively cheaper.

I've heard mixed things about Army Painter. I'm looking for a good black spray can for undercoating. I've used GW's before, and it's pretty good (in my experience) but quite pricey at £10.40 for 400ml. Currently, Army Painter black primer is £15 on Amazon - is there anywhere cheaper?
Does anyone have experience of using automotive primer (Halfords, Hycote etc)? Hycote is about £4-5.

Really? Pretty sure the RRP of Army Painter black primer is only about £8. I got 4 or 5 different colours at about £7 each from a shop, but they are available online for a similar price from Element Games. I've only used the Zombie colour and black so far and been happy enough with the results.

Poundland does a decent grey car primer that I use,
not sure if they do a black too but it's worth a look (I know they have a black gloss, but that's not really suitable as a primer)

I have never heard anything bad about Army Painter spray primers, at all.
They also have more in each can than GW.
And they do not turn into goo when used on Reaper Bones miniatures.
Army Painter has had my go to primers for years now.

Halfords primers (grey, black, white or lead oxide coloured) are ideal for undercoating. I generally use the grey and I've never had an issue with it on metal, plastic or resin.
Larger Halfords also stock their other paints such as camo colours and a very handy spray textured paint.

It's easy to use Army Painter wrong, you need to be VERY close when spraying, like 10cm/4" or less. If you spray from farther away you'll get a grainy finish.

Ah, an RTFM Error!
Now I understand!
I always read the label - different paints have different properties.
Army Painter has a very good shrink factor - pulling the paint tight to the model. From a distance... yeah, I can see it getting grainy.

To be fair, even if you do read the can, spraying with a rattle can involves a hefty amount of voodoo a/o other magics to ensure a clean coat. When things like humidity, temp (of both the air and model) wind gusts, and probably the angle of the sun impact the results, it’s easy to screw up.
It takes a good amount of experience and a weather eye to tell when you can go out and spray. Or just be old enough to feel the weather in your joints/bones. Being old and decrepit does have some perks.

Good 'ole Krylon rattle cans have provided my primer for 15 yrs and I've never had a problem. $3 a can @ Walmart. Of course for those overseas, this may not be an option (do you guys even have Walmart..?), but surely there's a hardware store or something of the like where you can pick it up. I'm sure all primers aren't created equally, but if you know what you're doing and don't spray in adverse conditions or too heavily, they all work fine.
