I dono why they wouldn't use some EU ships, but probably because it has to be new and fresh... or whatever

Most would be super excited because they never saw the ship before, a few would go ape gak because its their favorite EU ship and then a minority that would complain their favorite wasn't in the movies...

New Stuff for T-70 and F/O on the Website! No sign of the PS 7 guy, but we do see the new astromech and two TIE/F/O pilots.

https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2015/12/10/see-the-movie-fly-the-ships/

Due on the 17th

I called it. There are a lot of interesting things you can do with this guy. Wedge, Integrated Targeting Mech, Stay on Target. Hobbie Klivian now has basically a White K-turn. Talon Roll, Cool Hand, Astromech is a fully boosted shot.

Nice

Aces back to Wave 1 have been missing EPT's. Garvin Dreis, Biggs, a Bunch of TIE's, all the Y-wings. TIE Advanced was the only one to get both original Aces with Talents. If Epsilon Ace could get Push the Limit, it would be a rather Crazy Threat (PS12 Arc-dodger for 24 points).

I agree with Crazy_Carnifex. EPT's have been a very large portion of the meta for a really long time. I think this is a conscious effort to reduce their effect... perhaps give other upgrades a chance to shine.

Ugh. Thank you FFG, for posting a preview article that will probably get attention from newbies and has squadron ideas that are utter garbage. Seriously, if you're going to post ideas could you at least try to make them somewhat competitive?

As for the cards:

Targeting astromech seems like a pretty marginal choice. You're essentially spending 2 points to reduce the drawback of a k-turn, and getting nothing out of it the rest of the time. R3-A2 is a clear winner on generic ships, and one of the regen droids wins on tanky aces. The only truly interesting trick I can see is the Hobbie one, and even with that the TIE defender has made a convincing case that the white k-turn isn't that big a deal. I'm not sure that the combo is enough to make up for the poor base stats of the x-wing.

Zeta leader is pretty good. PS 7 and an EPT with a 3/3/3/1 stat line looks like an amazing deal for 20 points and the TIE/FO has a great dial for clearing stress. Without PTL it's not going to dominate games like interceptor aces can do, but I think it's going to be a great place to add raw efficiency to your list.

Epsilon ace is disappointing. Temporary PS 12 might be decent on another ship, but it's still a TIE fighter with no EPT or pilot ability. You just aren't going to do much with that high PS and that makes it hard to justify spending the extra points over a generic PS 1 meatshield.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

I think Hobbie has a few advantages over the defender, namely the fact that he doesn't have the K-turn as his only way to turn. He is also 3 points cheaper, and has a better PS (So my opponents fodder can't arc-dodge on me- I may choose a speed 1 maneuver instead). Sure, I lose Barrel Roll and a point of Agility, but Hobbie actually has better than a white turn- he gets a free action off of it, so turns, gets a fully boosted shot, than acts like normal next turn.

I think that the droid will also be very useful for just keeping offensive pressure with either Stay on Target, or Generic Talon Rolls. For the Same cost as Autothrusters, you get an Integrated targeting Mech. Autothrusters is the better defensive choice, but the droid provides a balance of Offence and Defense. As for R3-A2, that's currently on my Y-wing, so I need something else for my X-wings.

I'm excited to use Targeting Astromech in my Aturi Cluster campaign with Hobbie and Push the Limit on my TLT Y-Wing. In addition to the K-Turn, I'll get a boost on my 4 ahead and 3 Turn, which will make up for loosing the R2 astromech.

I also really like it on Dutch and Horton. Dutch basically allows you to surprise someone with a 2-ship alpha strike.
Getting a Target Lock on Horton is always good.

So, Targeting Astromech will be a situational card.

What I meant isn't a literal 1v1 comparison with the defender, it's that the white k-turn doesn't add all that much value to the defender. Both the defender and x-wing are ships that are mediocre at best without a white k-turn, and in the case of the defender the "OMG white k-turn!" hype turned out to be way too optimistic. It's just not enough to make up for having stats that are otherwise disappointing. You don't get to use it all that often, and even when you do it's a very predictable move. So we can probably guess that the same will be true with Hobbie: you'll want to do it, but it's probably not going to be enough to upgrade Hobbie's status from "x-wings are bad" to "viable competitive option".

I think that the droid will also be very useful for just keeping offensive pressure with either Stay on Target, or Generic Talon Rolls.

Maybe, but I'm not convinced for two reasons:

1) Your green maneuver options are limited without a generic R2. Is getting a target lock (on a turn where you won't have focus to set up a decisive shot) really worth having much more limited options on the following turn? If you're doing red maneuvers often enough that it's worth paying for upgrades that only happen when you do them then you really want a better dial to recover from those red maneuvers.

2) Unlike the Hobbie combo you're not actually getting extra actions per turn. You're mitigating the action loss from the red maneuver, but you're still coming out behind where you'd be if you'd taken a white or green maneuver and a normal action. So you're not going to be taking red maneuvers just to trigger the droid as often as possible, which really limits how often you'll get to use it.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

No, his name is a play on Hello Nasty, a Beastie Boys album from the late 90s. Side note: it features their hit Intergalactic, which is fitting given the setting of the movies.

Indeed. (Another play on a Beastie Boys album, this time Licence to Ill).

I stand corrected. I was pretty young when License to Ill came out, and never much into rap or hip hop, so I wasn't paying much attention to them when Hello Nasty came out.

Going by those examples, it would seem that the original idea might have been that named pilots already have a "baked in" EPT. Put another way, adding an EPT to a generic pilot is a way to make your own ace. Give them a silly name and away you go.
