I would be pretty mad since I hate the current ork codex, and I know chaos players nids and guard are no fans. Say all they did for the next few years (till it was time to crank it back up for the next eldar dex anyway) Was small campaign updates like they did for tau. So most everything in your codex stays as is, with a few minor tweaks, no points adjusted, and only formations added/maybe one or two new units. Would you be angry, or OK with it?

P.S. the options are meant to be funny, not insult eldar players, many of whom are great peoples.

Codex: Space Marines: I'm fine with this. They are pretty good as they are.

Astra Militarium: ...I don't know. If the formations were enough to make them competitive yeah. But I would rather have them redo Guard and then do periodic updates like this.

I've been asking for years for army lists to be filed into the core rulebook with updates via White Dwarf or campaign books.... So I would be right behind this idea.

I have no idea how I'm supposed to respond to the poll, though.

How mad would I be?
200%!

In all seriousness, considering how broken (in both directions) some Codexes are, it would be a really bad idea to start going with this.

While some codex's need some new models and rules i think what they've been doing with formations alone has more than brought up the standard of armies.

If the remaining armies just got formations that are half as good as Marines' or necrons' i think it could be big progress.

But then again as a Tau player i am a bit disappointed more in our codex hasn't changed, like vespid or kroot which could have and should have easily been tweaked. Kind of seems lazy. But then if not the rules maybe the content in the Tau codex has changed more than we realise.

Not at all that mad.

It's kinda like how the Forgeworld books work, just without the 40k/Apoc only stamps.

It would definitely hurt for books that need to be updated due to bad special rules or core book units that need a price rejigger. Anger over that is justifiable

I thought this was a really cool move by GW.

Rather than just buying an updated codex which is 90% recycled background, art and rules. You get a book dedicated to just the new content. New rules, new background (the campaign fluff) and new art. Win, win, win.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

They did this with Tyranids already. They just didn't release a new codex with the stuff in it. Tyrannocytes, Toxicrene, Zoanthrope with the Neurothrope, Mucoloids and a new Detachment because Decurion wasn't a thing then. It's not the first time. Leviathan was what the Nids got, and Kauyon is what the Tau get.

I mean, it's not the worst thing in the world. I still hate the Tyranid codex and the strict builds needed, but it did add new elements to the army. If there had been a Decurion with legitimate benefits, I wouldn't be as butthurt. In Tau's case, they didn't need a big page 1 rewrite so I can't fault them too badly.

Need to have a solid base to work from. For the most part Tau, Eldar, Necrons, Space Wolves, and Space Marines seem to be good for this. Orks, Tyranids, CSM, Dark Eldar, Guard, etc need some major reworking to fix the core problems. Units need to be usable in a CAD first before you should try and focus on spicing things up in formations.

IG codex sucks, as do most units in it. Even if the formation would be ok, then I would still have to play vs armies with good units and good formations. So 10-11 in the mad scale I would say.

This is what a lot of other companies are already doing, right? Release new unit's/models in campaign books or expansions and then every few years compile them into one book.

I seem to think this is how GW use to do buisness in the early 90's with WD and chapter approved getting groupings of new rules, and then every few years releasing a codex for said army with all the combined rules that survived to that date. Not to mention with them updating codexes (codecies?) every 1 to 2 years now instead of every 3 to 6 years, this will slow down the need to buy a full codex as often when getting new army rules.

I said 4 as while I can see the opportunity for new units/ models to be introduced and not have to wait 2-3 years for a proper codex update. That being said, I'm relatively apathetic to the codex cycle- I rarely if ever game, so I'm more a painter than anything.

Honestly it's tough as I can see both sides to the argument- A mediocre codex with a mediocre campaign book does nothing whereas fixing a codex can be a much better situation.

This is where I'd put my signature...If I had one!

I would just stop playing all together. There would be no point in me playing a game where every other army will almost always beat me purely because my chosen faction has been made into the weakest one there and as such forces me to rely upon a mix of gross incompetence on my opponents behalf and me using every ounce of my innate tactical and strategic genius to allow me to even stand a hope in hells chance of winning.

A little bit more than that, from what has been shown. Some adjusted skills(apparently Vespid now have Stealth as standard) and points values, but the book was in a good enough place that it did not need wild reworking.

The Point of the thread was with the 6th ed codex and the new campaign book, you don't need the new book as very little core has changed and what did was covered In the campaign book. And while this may be preferable to those that already have strong codecies and in fact may protect them from sensible nerfs, the people in the bottom half are essentially stuck with garbage, propped up by new formations or not.

No amount of campaigns will fix these as they are. Except maybe the IG, but they have some fundamental gameplay flaws that make them feel clunky and unworkable as an army.
