Easy. Go for miniatures based on Confrontation. If you're going for nostalgia, go for REAL "We never actually published this game except bits of it in White Dwarf 25 years ago, and it's set on Necromunda" nostalgia.

Yeah, those generic Confrontation gangers are rather popular and go for pretty good price in ebay.

Well, there's going to be very few people who know that necromunda came from there.
They'll want people to think "Ooh, I loved my Escher back in the day, I'll pick up some of the new stuff"".
It'll be very interesting to see what form it takes - you'd assume the volume outside of an initial box wouldn't warrant plastics, but we're in rather uncharted territory.
HH Epic and HH BFG would seem like obvious plastic box and resin support... but Necromunda is a puzzler

I would be soooo stoked to see Necromunda come alive again. We actually had a good size 40k group at our FLGS that switched every weekend between 40k and Necro for our table time, years ago.
The issue I see is a rules publication. FW would do a better job than GW main, but the current rules are still an issue. By that I mean the community rules over on Yaktribe and EasternFringe have pretty well fixed everything needing fixing and they've all been thoroughly play tested AFAIK. Granted its more of laugh at the idiot juve game than serious but FW would have to overhaul GW rules, while anything they attempt to make themselves is probably outdone by the the community editions out there currently. How do you guys think FW would approach a ruleset?
(GW did a re-release back in the mid-2000s and dusted off old sculpts. They even released new models that included orlocks, arbites and a the Ratskin king if i recall. It followed The Redeemer graphic novel. All they did for rules though was print a new cover over old art and rules. It ultimately failed to rekindle significant interest)

The old Necro models might be considered classic, but they are hardly matching the quality of what FW can output today. As long as new gangs follow the quality of kits like the Witch Elves or the Mechanicus range, I'll buy them all and never look back.
Same goes for Bloodbowl and even Mordheim. Trying to put together a decent looking Skaven warband is impossible for me, despite the large amounts of models the WFB range output. Once you have Sniktch as your assassin, nothing else quite lives up to it.

While I've never looked at the community rules, the GW re-release was a godawful mess designed to remove the need for different shaped dice, sustained fire dice, and more than one flamer template size. It also introduced the absolutely horrible, nonsensical "House equipment" rules.
1st edition for me, all the way.

I played in two great N:Underhive campaigns last year straight from the book/LRB. No problem at all (Except Genestealer gangs - not cool fellers!).
I actually liked the one shot full template hand-flamers and didn't miss SF dice or the on-fire rules (Pain in the arse that they were). These were great for getting a big XP bump on a staring ganger as you often find clumps of 3-4 enemies hiding behind cover somewhere, and they just don't see it coming!
Equipment lists, meh so long as my leader can get a chainsword and a bolt pistol (pre-requisites for leadership in the 40k universe IMHO), there's a stack of las/auto-guns and a Heavy Stubber I think your golden.

They use to have a 18 month cycle where they would release product, once complete start the next game. We could only hope they wont screw this up like Age of Sigmar.
If I got my wish list they would start with Necromunda but mix it a little with 40k in 40 minutes; This would allow newer 40k players to join in with the models they got.
Take the current Yakro rules credit the community, make the first book about gangs, next book about aliens and a book about inquisitors and space marines. Something like what Fantasy Flight is doing with the Star Wars RPG right now, with the rules included, so you would only need one book if you wanted.
Make space marines bad to the bone, but you only get one or two of them. or a squad of eldar guardians and make special custom models for the skirmish game but could be used
in a 40k army also; intro type game with cross compatibly would rock. They just need to hire me as a project leader.

I think you're confusing "popular" with simply being rare enough that the few examples fetch high prices.
Confrontation gangers aren't even remotely "popular" and certainly don't have the recognition -essential for a relaunch- and comparatively wide nostalgia that the classic Necromunda gangs have.

No thanks. 1st edition was a great effort, but it has far to many holes, all of which have been thoroughly explored and exploited by a generation of Necro players. I do agree with you that the re-relase of "Underhive" and then the online "Living Rulebook" were far from sufficient.
Genoside07 wrote:Take the current Yakro rules credit the community.
I know this won't happen, but it would by far be the best way to go. In preparation for our club's campaign I read all 3 versions. Original Rulebook, the "Living rulebook" ( A slight mod of the "Underhive book"), and the Yaktribe "Necromunda Community Edition" (aka NCE). Every point where the previous two editions had some lacking of clarity or something that didn't seem quite balanced, it was addressed by the NCE.
NCE isn't a radical departure in any way, and some folks will not like every change, but it's been heavily playtested and systematically addresses just about complaint that folks have had about imbalance and lack of clarity in the previous editions. It's also nice that all the changes are in red text so you can go back and see what was changed. It's worked well for our campaign so far and I highly recommend it.

Be interesting certainly and its a cool way to go considering 'the spiders' gang is one of the largest on Necromunda so large in fact that an imperial guard regiment can be conscripted from it and its still considered one of the largest.

If any part of modern GW could potentially be trusted with reviving the Specialist Games, it's FW. And while I love the SGs to death lets keep the rosy specs in their case, with the exception of BFG most of the SGs needed house ruling out the arse to work really well(they weren't unplayable without them like AoS is IMO, but they benefited immensely). And even if the rules do turn out to be rubbish; so what? I played SGs when GW was actively promoting and selling them, I played SGs when GW was treating them like the red-headed step-child, I played SGs when they were totally ignoring them, and I still play SGs despite them having actively attempted to kill them off. Worst case scenario we'll be exactly where we are now except with potentially lots of lovely new models to consider buying - I can live with that.
Actually I was speaking from a financial viability standpoint, a plastic Gangers box would have a lot of utility with 40k and it would make sense to make it as useful as possible for any future Necromunda project, therefor 'generic' parts. I don't really have much in the way of a personal preference in this area.
The rules for Epic and Blood Bowl are perfectly fine as they are, as indeed are the Necro and Mordheim core rules. I have never actually played BFG so I can't say much about that aside from the rules look decent. All that needs doing is some housekeeping and sensible tweeking, predominantly with campaign rules. At the moment I don't trust any GW department to be able to do that.
The SGs have survived perfectly well on their own for over a decade now, I know that they will be able to survive by themselves. However it would be nice if GW manages to exceed my expectations.
AlexHolker wrote:On top of everything else "generic" inevitably means "male", which means throwing away the one gang that is also the most popular.
People are really taking 'generic' far too literally, besides it would be perfectly possible to include female heads in a plastic set.

These aren't females in full military attire. These are a fully female gang that uses their gender as part of their gang identity. In terms of realistic depictions, Escher gangers are one case where you'd expect female features to be noticeable.

I don't see why GW can't make a boxed set with two gangs, and four more gangs in polystyrene kits. A gang is about 10 figures. It should be possible to put 10 individual figures plus some options into a box the size and cost of a Tactical Squad or Fire Warriors Team.

I'd probably not drop a bunch of money on a Mordheim release after I converted my Witch Hunter gang up. Maybe buy a boxed set and donate the terrain to my store for a mordheim campaign.
Depends on the person I suppose, but personally I would probably buy 3-4 gangs depending on how much I like the sculpts. I actually haven't hung on to many of the original models mainly due to the limited conversion potential.
But there's probably a lot of people out there who want to play but haven't due to the scarcity and price of the old models and may not have interest in converting their own out of existing GW or 3rd party models.
Mr. Burning wrote:Here's a thought.
Gw's campaign against Chapterhouse showcased ineptitude of mega proportions regarding Trademarks and copyright AND the rights to artwork .
How much of the visual material do GW 'own' I could see GW developing new themes and art styles for such games as Necromunda.
And as with Imperial Guard Lizardmen et el expect some favourite names to be changed to something more defensible. 'Goliaths' and Redemptionists for 'Munda would be a dead cert for the name change machine.
Don't expect things to stay the same in anyway, shape or form.
The thing about that is, no one is out there making a ton of money off of "not-Escher" and "not-Goliath' models like they were with Space Marines and Tyranids and such. And for the few companies like Heresy that are with their "not-Delaque' range, they aren't brazen enough to call them by their GW trademarked names like CH did with their stuff.
There are a handful of names that might be tough to enforce trademark, but I feel that is easily fixed if you start referring to them as House Goliath, or House Escher, etc.

No. Seriously, no. Why does so many 40k players feel the need to shoehorn so much 40k stuff into Necro? The last thing Necro needs is space marines, and arguably inquisitors, but that's at least slightly more plausible. If you want that, just play Kill Team. Or Inquisitor if you want more of an RPG.
Necromunda at it's core should be about humans vs. humans, which are easily killed and typically poorly equipped. It doesn't need space marines. It doesn't need Eldar. Although they have some of that stuff in Outlanders for campaigns, but they were not intended to be included as a gang that progresses and gains experience, more-so for use in one off scenarios.
Necromunda doesn't need to be compatible with 40k model wise(other than scale). It is its own game. There are already far more 40k models than anyone could ever need. Hell, you even have a huge range of 30k to pull from as well. We can have standalone games in the 40k universe that don't have to tie in directly to 40k games.
As much as people say GW doesn't innovate and needs more variety to put out against the competition, when they actually want to offer that, everyone seems to just want more 40k.

I have to agree with this. Keep 40k as far from Necro as possible for as long as possible. The charm of Necromunda is that it's a gang v. gang combat system. It doesn't need the 40k military forces to be a great game. If GW produces a Necromunda gaming engine that is successful, it could be the basis of a separate -but possibly compatible- Inquisitor'ish game that would be alot of fun. Regardless, Necromunda needs several years and plenty of space to be it's own thing before being ruined by Space Marines.

Why do so many 40k players feel the need to shoehorn so much 40k stuff into Necromuda? Because they're looking for a good game (or a good skirmish game) to play with their 40k figures. "good skirmish game" rules out Kill Team (Kill Team Step 1: Rewrite and fix all of the model special rules. Step 2: Get another person to agree. ...), and Inquisitor doesn't use the same scale figures.
I'm sure it's nothing to do with the fact that Necromunda uses all of the game mechanics from Rogue Trader and 2nd edition 40k that 3rd edition ended up removing to support increasing the game size.

I don't see GW coming out with a separate game line (whether one off or continually developed and supported via SG) set in the 40k universe that doesn't incorporate the golden goose of the company in some way (maybe not as the focus but just allowing their use with it). I think it's more likely that they'll borrow the name "Necromunda" for a skirmish warband with RPG style progression game that supports gang warfare but isn't focused on it. There will probably be some fluff advancement about a great *insert xenos villain here* invading the hive and both the locals as well as the tradition military might of the Imperium rise up to defeat it. That's not a rumor btw in case Pretre is reading but rather just speculation on my part.

I would be cool with something like that. In fact, as much as I love the original Necro, I think that they blundered by not putting more ties-in with 40k. For example, it's a shame that they didn't released a chaos cult and a genestealer cult.

in a 40k army also; intro type game with cross compatibly would rock. They just need to hire me as a project leader.

100% agree. Part of the appeal of Necromunda too was that it was far removed from grim dark eternal war of the rest of 40k. These people were shoved down into the bowels of the this monolithic city as punishment and instead find this kind of glorious wild freedom. And it often wasn't even war to the death like 40k - it was just a bunch of gangs trying to scare each other off for turf, or respect, or some sweet mysterious elder artifacts - you took your scrapes and bruises and accumulated some battle scars and maybe you'll all be drinking at the scum bar the next week.
Space marines are the antithesis of the flavor and feeling of the original. Space Marines are supper srrius you guise!

OK, but the problem is by shoving 40k units like space marines into a game like Necromunda, it would no longer be a good game. There is a reason power armor is virtually non-existent in Necro, and even taking carapace armor gives you negative initiative. The core mechanics of the game are thrown off by such high powered units, and it screws up everything in a game that has perma-death and other such negative outcomes.
If you're playing Necromunda as intended it is a campaign based game. One that requires a regular group of players. If you can't find someone to agree to a game of Kill Team(i.e. probably a person you regularly play with), you probably aren't going to find anyone to play a Necromunda campaign either. This means you probably aren't going to be playing "good" games of Necromunda anyway. So then you're just at a point playing the game counter to how it was intended to be played, with models that weren't intended to be played with it. Square peg in a round hole.
There's no need ruin it for the rest of us so you can use your space marines instead of just buying a damn Necro gang to play the game properly.

You can never beat your first time. The second generation is shinier, stronger, faster and superior in every regard save one, and it's an unfair criticism to level, but it simply can't be as original. - Andy Chambers, on the evolution of Games Workshop games |

Agreed on those two, and possibly even minor inquisitor bands (undercover and investigating a cult, so they can't pull on their full resources). But those feel like the type of things you'd include in an expansion to the core game rather than the core of the system (as core crews, they make gangers pretty redundant).

I'd say yes to chaos cults, no to genestealer cults. Necromunda should be a game about people, with people-scaled problems, and a small cult of chaos worshippers is easier to imagine never exceeding that scope than a genestealer cult is. A group like the Blood Coven in "The Day of Thirst" are a threat, sure, but there's no sure path for them to ever be more than a dozen psychos feeding people to a bloodthirsty hole. With a genestealer cult, we already know how it works - genestealer french kisses humans, humans have hybrid babies, hybrids have genestealer babies, genestealers call hive fleet to ruin whole planet's day.

Yes, but this process is very long iirc. So I think it's belivable that a genestealer cult would stay small enough for a certain period of time to fit in a necromunda setting
