Like it or not, DakkaDakka is seen by a lot of people as a "competitive" places, to put it mildly. This is where major tournaments are discussed and GT-level lists built, and the community in the 40k forum ends up reflecting this mindset (people in my gaming groups also view Dakka as full of trolls, which is only somewhat true).
While I have only been to a couple 40k tournaments in my three years of playing, my performance in terms of tournament rankings ends up going like this:
Lose the first few rounds because I was matched up against a better general and list/getting hosed by dice/playing Kill Points with MSU
Fall to the bottom of the ladder, stomp people who weren't prepared
Claw my way back to a finish in the middle of the pack (my records are 3-3 and 2-1 with low tournament points so far); I'd say this makes me about average in terms of generalship
I wonder if anyone else would be willing to share/admit to how they typically perform in a tournament environment?

I play fairly casually for 40k, but I don't get the opportunity to play that many games, as my FLGS is dominated by Magic/Warmahordes/Heroclix players so when tourney's crop up for 40k I tend to jump at the chance to get some games in. These tourney's are also when all the 40k players at my FLGS tend to come out of the woodwork, and they tend to bring really competitive lists against my mostly casual lists (built out of what I have available, and I don't have any of the competitive units for any of my armies). So I end up getting curbstomped for the most part. Although some people do end up getting surprised by the fact that I bring Guard to the Eldar/Tau dominated tournaments that are held there, so I do win on occasion

I tend to avoid the competitive scene, and the lists I use are firmly non-competitive (although non un-competitive), but I've done reasonably OK when I get roped into it. I even managed to win one, purely by accident.

Um, I haven't played much 40k tournaments, but I do have some plaque from a Warmachine tournament I won like ten years ago at an LGS that no longer exists as far as I know. Does that count?
I'd say I'm a good player, although a lazy one, when it comes to MtG I generally go infinite, as in I can keep using my prize money to enter tournaments due to good finishes so I never really pay entry fees, though I generally make very risky decisions as it's more fun. Maybe I'm just in a weird bubble since most people I play with are rather proficient, and a good chunk of them are in the pro-tour for MtG... In fact I get offered draws quite often because I'm pretty light hearted about the whole thing, and people usually know me so they'd rather split prizes and then play for points or title than risk the loss, speaking of which I need to make sure that one other LGS still has my 100$ in store credit.
I view myself as competitively-casual.

We tend to have a tournament every month at my FLGS, so I get plenty of chances to play in tournaments. Let's just say I haven't grasped some of the nuances of competitive list building or game strategy. As a result, I usually get roflstomped so hard it isn't funny. I have started to get better though (usually I win at least one game out of three in our tourneys nowadays), and its a great chance to renew some acquaintances, gawk at some beautiful miniatures, and throw some dice around, so I will keep going to the tourneys.

Reasonably well at my local, a win or top 3 placing probably about 40% of the time.
In my one effort at a serious tournament so far, mid-pack (42nd out of 87) with T-Sons and Tzeentch Daemons, which I was pretty happy with. Will go again in 2016 with a more competative list and maybe even aim to head over to LVO in 2017, but that's a long way away and more of an excuse for a road trip / holiday with some cool people than for any serious competative reasons.

Well, during the last ten years I attended a lot of local tourneys. I placed first to third in almost all of them.
However, during the last edition we stopped tourneys.
The last we organized February last year.
For us 40k is no longer playable, only in a closed group.

Well, last one I went to I can second. Partly because I was rushed for time so didn't move my unit onto an objective, or have the same number of turns as my opponent.
All in all, 3 wins out of 3 was good. Had it not been for VP, would have won.
I don't go to official tournaments, only homebrew ones where we don't have arguments amongst us

Played for ~10 years without ever playing in a tourney, was just well known for having win streaks in the dozens while building totally random lists. Figured that was more because few people here are competitive.
Watched LVO 2015 streams and realized that nothing was going over my head.
Tried out my first 2 day Tourney, took home an imp knight, found out about ITC rankings and decided I wanted to make a run for top BA in the circuit, so I started watching for events in the middle of the U.S.
Tourney reports are in sig. Also played in some local events since then, beyond the 4 ITC events.
As for the top BA in the ITC, I currently hold it.

Played my first ever tounament this weekend. Modified team adepticon using ITC missions. Got stomped the first game, tabled on turn 3 with 0 points on purge the alien. second game was closer, third game we only lost because we hit time on turn 4. I was playing immo spam sisters and my buddy had a dark vengeance box set with a land raider and a rhino and 1 more squad of tac marines. Forgot for the ENTIRE TOUNEY that DA get overwatch at bs2. Sister did SERIOUS work especially considering how little experience I have. Dominions got nuked first turn every turn but made their points back easily(except first game) Six up invul on vehicles is amazing. Celestine had a tough time game 1 and 2 but turn three spent the whole game chasing veteran marines off of objective and shrugging off like 40 2+ saves. Would have been even better if I ever got more than 2 hits with an exorcist.

Aw, they could have gone really meta with it, like having the first place trophy and the last place one combine into one diorama style thing. That way if you get both you can use the grot as the base and the other one as the top/center.
Like imagine the grot one is wide and flat, with a crater in the center and a grot looking in fear of it, then the first place trophy is a mountain thing with a valiant warrior (or Ork) at the top. If you have both you can slot the mountain into the crater to look like the grot is looking in awe towards the warrior at the top... Would be a cool way to progress from that grot to the hero for players, while also giving more reason for people to play less powered lists in hopes of completing the set once they get the first place one.

Firmly middle of the board at WHW events. I play fluff blob guard and only really score on fellowship and favourite game votes.
Never tried a super harsh tourney as I'm very new.
I used to play Heroclix nationals tourneys and ranked somewhere in the top ten. Stopped going when I was awarded a large prize from Wizkids for being the only female player in attendance.

Very well. Since the end of 'Ard Boyz (no causal relationship, just the last time I got absolutely drubbed in competitive play) I have either won, or missed out on the top slot due to a single loss.
That being said, I live in the rural Midwest, and there are no 'major' tournaments I can feasibly attend. 20 people is the biggest turnout I've ever participated in.

I usually do pretty well. I am currently the top-ranked Grey Knight and Tyranid player on the ITC circuit. I've won a GT before and was a part of Team Fluffy Bunnies that won ATC 2013. I used to write a lot of battle reports here on dakka (see my signature below) but am currently taking a break from writing.
Yet despite my accomplishments, I consider myself a casual competitive player. Winning is fun but it isn't everything. In competitive play, I'm usually pretty relaxed as long as my opponent isn't being a jerkoff. I've let opponents do re-do's or go back and do something that they've forgotten before. I've let my opponents play on even when there wasn't enough time and at my expense. I've even let my opponents use proxies in tournament play (had one IG opponent who forgot some of his infantry models and I let him use space marine models instead). I can be strict when I have to be but overall, I tend to give my opponent the benefit of the doubt even when it hurts my chances of winning.

Your battle reports were always quite nice and I enjoyed them.
Winning is not everything is a good habit. In 40k winning everything is impossible due to the lack of a tight rule set.

Same here. I've done well enough at tournaments that I'm confident that if I took the cheesiest list I could and practiced against other cheesy lists then I could compete, but I don't play nearly enough practice games and I run pretty much pure GKs, so I'm content with typically winning 2 out of 3 games, give or take.

The only things I'm ever top 3 in is the race for the Murphy's Luck award. (and Best Sport)
Even the one and only time I posted a winning record at the old school GW GT events, I only lost out on Murphy's Luck because the winner was a Skaven player who tabled himself on his first shot of the game.
I managed to somehow, fail a re-rolled Dangerous check on a Rhino, then repair it on a 6, and then fail another re-rolled DT check in the following turn... Twice! (and those were the only 8 DT checks I rolled for all tournament. )
The previous year, my Dark Eldar played a Night Fight scenario vs. Templars, and managed to kill just 5 whole Marines over 6 turns. However I lost out to the Night Gobbo army that ran off the board first turn because it got dark.
Then there was the year I brought a hoard style WoC list in early 6th edition, and failed 10 out of 10 Ld9-10 Terror checks, and had my entire army bar a unit of 5 Chaos Knights + 2 units of 5 Hounds leg it on turn 1 because the Giants of Albion glanced at my army... (didn't help that the scenario deployment zone was only 6" from the table edge either!)
I lost out to the guy who was just plain stupid than unlucky, as he'd deployed a Land Raider + Land Raider Crusader w/Chappy + Force Commander + 5 Termies side-by-side, strait across from his opponent's Vindicator... 1 shot and everything died!
I guess when I do to tournaments it's so my dice can provide entertainment for my opponents.

Chicago is not feasible for me to attend, unfortunately. It's seven hours away, and my personal/financial responsibilities leave me unable to travel out of town to the other end of the state just to play in a Warhammer tournament. (Much as I wish that I could!) If a tournament isn't close enough to southern Illinois to drive to, play, and return home every night, it's too far away for me. (At this point. Hopefully, once my son's a little older and the financial situation is a bit more stable, that might change.)
Since I started playing the Freakshow, I've participated in two competitive events around me. I took first place in one of them, and second place in the other. (In the second, I lost to a Gladius--the first time I'd ever encountered such a beast!)
EDIT: There's been more than two tournaments, of course, its just that the composition restrictions that are favored in my area make Freakshows virtually impossible.

Welcome to Houserule40K. As long as you don't mind slight changes to the core rules, you can still have a lot of fun.
