I know my own chapter of marines has over 8000 pts, and it is not the biggest of my 4 marine armies.

When you throw in all the other armies it gets ridiculous.

Depends upon wich edition we'discussing (not all of my models/armies even exist in some editions) & GW likes to change pts values of stuff....
But speaking generally?
Somewhere around 250k pts.

That's split between 49 distinct armies/forces that now cover most everything but Custodes. Most of wich are in storage atm.
If your curious as to the list look for a thread about how many armies do you have.

Currently 7000ish points of Orks and 3500ish points of Space Wolves.

I used to have a collection that was worthy of twice that amount of points, including 5000ish points of Drukhari. Halved my 40k collection to make room for Necromunda and Warhammer Fantasy armies.

Between 50.000-60.000 points in 40k, maybe more. More if I count AoS with it.

To be fair I've been collecting since second edition(with a break in 4th) and have bought a lot of old armies at good deals over the years.

Somewhere in the realm of 5k points of Orks for me.

Once upon a time I had an additional 6k points of Orks and about 10k points of Guard, but I sold them all when I fell out of the game and had to start over afterward.

Far too many?

Around 2k of Drukhari
3k of clowns
~25k (really no clue anymore at this point) of CWE.
3k of HH salamanders.
Assortments of other bits and pieces from deals, battle boxes, etc.

Have about 15k all in all between guard, orks, grey knights, space marines and inquisition. Here’s a pic of about 6k guards. I have more unpainted and far more in unfinished projects haha.

Maybe 2-300 still on sprue.

I’ve got some dust covered IG and BA, maybe another 1,000 points, but that’s really just a guess. Haven’t played them since 2nd-ish, and the last rules I have for them is 3rd edition.

Last tallies from my 2021 year end post:
Marines 16,785 points.
Tyranids 1,645 points.
Eldar 4,023

Since this post 6ish years ago I’ve painted quite a bit. Depending on the year I average 2,500 points added to my collection annually, spread over all my armies. In the tome between posts I built up small Deathwatch and Tyanid forces, a bumch of Nighthaunt, and a host of other random things.

I have not recalculated how that will change with the balance datasheet, but I got something in the range of 6400 points of "Guard and friends". So almost pure guard with 2 Inquisitors and a hand full of admech.
That's build and painted, I think another 500-1000 points are yet unbuild

About this many:

Spoiler:

I don't really worry about point totals. I just kinda buy what I'd like to paint and eventually field. When I get about 2500-3000pts, I actually concern myself with list building. Because no matter the faction, I am going to want to change up my lists from game to game, and I don't field an army until it is painted. Which is at least 6 months, and a lot can change in that time in 40k these days.

So currently, I have playable Black Legion, Primaris and Genestealer Cult armies. And I am a little more than halfway to having a fieldable Necron army. The rest are pretty much kill teams.

Depending on edition and context...I'd believe 6-8k of Space Marines, in the neighborhood of 5k of Mechanicum and Knights, and somewhere around 1.5k of various sorts of Eldar. If you want point totals for the current rules maybe half of that is legal for play, and I'd struggle to put together 2,000pts that didn't automatically lose by virtue of being old, inefficient, and interacting with no stratagems.

If Battlescribe is correct... 8,119 PTS of pure space Marines with 1 Inquisitor (1,365PTS are Primaris which were built during 9th, rest is Firstborn but all is deployed as 1 army)

Oh and 660 of Custodes, wasn't planning to build this army but got a Guard box as a gift & saw the 9th codex on shelf at local store so \o/

Remember the poll is 6 years old, though.
So I could see it go either way: people that are still around will probably have moved into the 5000+ range by now but voted for less back then, on the other hand a lot of people might have left and a lot of people probably joined since 8th edition.

At last tally before I sold or threw into the garbage what I could not sell all GW models for my move since I was not in the game anymore...

I had 18 fully painted armies of at least 3000 points.

For 40k that was:
Thousand Sons (5000 or so)
Death Guard (3000 or so)
Generic Chaos Space Marines (4000 or so)
Necrons (5000 or so)
Eldar Iyanden (3000 or so)
Imperial Guard penal legion (3000 or so)
Space Marines (3000 or so)

"If you're going to stick to playing 40k for any significant length of time you need to have bought 5,000pts of 3+ armies so that when all your stuff is nerfed or deleted you can keep playing" isn't exactly news.

Hard to tell, as I don't play official ruleset anymore, so I don't follow point costs. But estimating from 7th ed costs and multiplying by plastic weight increase since then, I'll say about 30k of various Eldar flavours, Tyranids, Genestealers and Ad-mech, and steadily growing by couple K per year.

Well, 40K is hobby first, with the game a distant second if at all for the significant majority of people who're into 40k. So such poll results shouldn't exactly come as a surprise. It's only competitive players who think the entire 40k world revolves around "tournament meta".

I have yet to see someone who started w40k, who after getting 2000pts decide to get another 2000pts, unless there was an edition change. In fact most people I have seen, who were new players, quit after an edition or codex change wrecks their army.

It does explain the, just play something else advice, which I guess works when people have 5000+pts of stuff.

That's because you focus on FLGS crowd. I know half a dozen people who own between 1k and 6k of assorted 40k, AOS and Necromunda models and have not played a single game in their lives, none of them even own a rulebook and only two of them own a codex, for the lore. Those people will never set foot at FLGS, because they treat assembling, converting and painting models the same as colouring books for adults, Zentangle or LEGO.

I started my second army (Primaris only space marines) in 2019 after getting the Shadowspear box. I started playing them before Shock Assault and Bolter Displine existed. I had a 2000pt army when Hellblasters were the only Primaris space marine Heavy Support option (Repulsors were Dedicated Transport). I was playing my Primaris space marines at arguably the space marines' lowest point in 8th edition. Because I really enjoy painting Primaris space marines. Seriously, they are my favorite models to paint ever.

Later in 2019, I started my third army Genestealer Cults reaching 2000 points when the GSC Start Collecting released. I liked playing them in Kill Team and had a sizable collection, and I liked painting them. I have been crushed playing GSC every game except versus Tau in 9th before the Tau codex released. That'll probably continue as I have a pretty rigid mindset of a marine player that makes me a terrible GSC player.

My desire to start a new army is based on how much I enjoy painting the models of the faction more than how well they play. The size of my collection is in part due to my enjoyment in painting, part because I like having different options for building armies and part because my job pays well enough to afford it but also doesn't really allow for me to take vacations (so painting are my mini-vacations).

So there are definitely people that just spontaneously start new 40k armies. 40k isn't a game I care that much about winning or losing. I don't want the game to be absolute garbage, and I'm not a fan of how lethal it is. Part of my enjoyment is the games being a change to display models, but if they are quickly put back in the case, that enjoyment is diminished. Not to say I don't enjoy the gaming part, I am just not seeking power and optimization before the game actually begins. I want to do well on the table, not before I get there.

And despite the size of my collection, I tend to stick with my favorite units, good or bad. I play my CSM the most, and I often forget I even have Cultist models, as I always go marines for my Troops. I rarely don't field 15 Chaos Terminators. I like breaking out my Chaos Land Raider for games just because. I rarely field Abaddon, and to do so; I have rule to field Harkeen Worldclaimer in a game before Abaddon (the whole Herald of the Warmaster and everything). I have lots of crazy rules when playing my CSM (always overcharge plasma, always charge enemy characters with my characters, always make use of the Chaos Boon strat when the opportunity is presented, and other Chaos stuff).

And with my Primaris space marines, if am not doing a Tactius or Gravis themed army, I am going to have 10 to 20 Reivers because I think they're neat. I also never use a space marine chapter supplement. My custom chapter is an unknown successor, and I am sticking with that. Not every chapter is the 'Greatest of them all' Ultramarines. Some of them are the ones you never heard about at the beginning of a Black Library novel. You know, the space marine chapters that get wiped out to show how dangerous the threat is.

I started with Guard 2 years ago in 8th and kept getting more and more while the army got worse competetively. And I won't stop any Time soon regardless if they get Top dogs or get nerfed...
