Subject: Treasury: Harriet Tubman will be on the $20 bill
In a statement, the Treasury also announced that the new $20 note will keep an image of Jackson, who was a slaveholder, on the back. The new $10 bill will keep Hamilton on the front but in the back feature "an image of the historic march for suffrage that ended on the steps of the Treasury Department." Leaders of that movement—Lucretia Mott, Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Alice Paul — will be honored in the image.

Good. I thought it was strange that they put Andrew Jackson, who hated central banks, on a central bank note.

Wait, so they're putting Tubman on the front, and Jackson on the back? Get your chairs people, and make sure to keep a bottle of water handy. This gak is gonna get hot
Including this quote;
"We'll note that Tubman's appearance on the $20 bill would have a special historical resonance: That's the same amount she eventually received from the U.S. government as her monthly pension for her service as a nurse, scout, cook and spy during the Civil War, as well as for her status as the widow of a veteran."
Because it's easily the most interesting part of the article for me Also who else is laughing that Broadway saved Hamilton's face from being removed from currency
While I'm a Jackson fan (paved the way for the other states to join Texas, and that whole battle of NO thing) I'm just fine with it. I hope they use of her less stern photos or a painting as a base.
On the flip side, how can you do Moses justice with a mere piece of paper?

Good on you Murica. Tubman was a m-f-ing badass, a shining example of beating the game of life on the crushing difficulty setting.

Jackson was an ass who treated everyone in a fairly miserable fashion, attacked those who weren't in conflict, and turned on his allies, so no real loss.
Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Hamilton never even made it as far as President, but at least he was a Secretary of the Treasury, and they print money so I guess that is how he made it in the first place.

Hamilton did good with his currency system, so he deserves to stay, IMO. Jackson fethed up the national banks and left the next president to deal with it. (Van Buren, IIRC). As far as I'm concerned, they can take Jackson off of the 20 dollar bill entirely, he seems like a strange person to put onto the currency. While Tubman wasn't a person who focused on currency systems, having dealt with other very pressing issues, she deserves to go on there more than the guy who told the Supreme Court to enforce their own laws and caused the Trail of Tears.
TL;DR, Jackson can go, bring on Tubman, and Hamilton is a good guy for money.

Yeah, to be honest, Hamilton deserves to be on the bills more than any single person with the possible exception of George Washington. Removing him would have been a crime against the entire bank system. But...we all know how that went when I got involved in the changing tradition thing before. So...that's my piece and that's all.
Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Jackson KILLED the Second Bank of the United States, and he had good reason to be against it. The Federal Reserve's track record since 1912 proved him right long after his death.
And the President and Congress are not obligated to enforce the rulings of the Supreme Court, since judicial review is simply a legal precedent and not a Constitutionally enumerated power of the Federal Judiciary.
I will agree that the Trail of Tears was a tragic event in our history and a dick move on Jackson's part. He could have done something different when it came to the Cherokee Nation.

Enumerated powers are not the end of government authority; just Congressional authority. So yeah. Judicial Review isn't an enumerated power, but that really has nothing to do with anything since only Congress has enumerated powers. A Congress/President who ignores the ruling of the Supreme Court is by definition in violation of the Constitution. The ability of those bodies to effectively ignore the court is a fundamental flaw in the system*, not carte blanche to ignore the court. At that point, you should be extremely afraid, because we have a word for people who do as they please and don't give a gak; tyrant.
*And likely has no remedy. This is where civics hits the reality that systems only work because people invest their trust in them.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, because I wanted to check this before opening my mouth; Jackson never told the court to suck it. The famed quote "John Marshall has made his decision; now let him enforce it!" was invented by a man named Horace Greeley decades later.
To point, the court never even ruled against Jackson. In the two relevant cases, the first (Cherokee Nation v Georgia), SCOTUS turned down the the case and never heard it. In the second (Worcester v Georgia), the Court actually ruled that Georgia could not interfere with the Cherokee Nation, only the Federal government had that authority. In fact, Jackson never disobeyed the court because the court never ruled against him.

Yeah I'm all for Andrew Jackson leaving the 20 dollar bill as well and not so much with the 10.
At first way back when I had some reservations but when an online friend reminded me he was a jerk I was like, "You're right. This is stupid. I can think of nothing more insulting to Jackson than for a black slave woman to take his place on a bill."
I just hope they find a good picture of Tubman to put on the bill. Hopefully nobody gets annoyed about it but the picture they currently show of her makes her look incredibly mopey. That kind of doesn't look good as something that'll be on all your money.

I would like to say this though. Since my suggestion went over well last time why don't they use 'Inventors of the United States' as a theme for the next batch of money. America is known as the land of innovation (at least to a degree). Far as I know there was at least one black male inventor (George Washington Carver) which could basically make anything out of peanuts (not sure how well it worked but all the stuff he made was impressive esp. considering it was based on one thing). Also while Tubman did something great it was more of something that helped black people rather than everybody. Inventors of all kinds generally help a wide array of people of all backgrounds. She is a symbol against slavery but I dunno that she helped all americans. Probably a more recognizable figure than George Washington Carver though.

I'm amused at those who are hating on Jackson being on the bill...because he would have absolutely despised the fact that he was on a bill produced by a treasury system he found abhorrent and actively worked against.

I don't think anyone is hating Jackson for being on the bill, just that people didn't care for him because he was a giant gakker all around. He found lots of things abhorrent, like the Cherokee and The Supreme Court.

Oh yes, that period of 1912 to 2016 in which the stable currency provided by the Federal Reserve saw the US rise to becoming the most powerful and prosperous country in the world. What a stuff up that's been.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
