Changing Our Legion's Name
|
So my question for everyone, is do you prefer playing your "Traitors" as "Loyalists" / "Loyalists" as "Traitors". Be it an Alternate Heresy, Crusade Era, Post Heresy Loyalist remnants, Traitors that abandoned their Legion or "these guys are just loyal/Traitor because I can"? Personally I like the think of my Death Guard as Loyal, either in the Crusade Era or Just Because I can, even though I include Typhon Which is a big fat sickness loving Traitor. I'm just a loyalist fan boy in all honesty.
Interested to see if anyone else likes to mix it up a bit and why they prefer it that way.

Typhon is one of the characters I hate the most in the 30k / 40k background^^
I'm torn apart between the glorious Loyalist Emperor's Children, early Crusade / Istvaan era ,or the infamous Traitors, but with all the nasty gear (shriekers, kakophony...), the characters I like (Lucius and Fulgrim) and their dramatic fall.
So I'ill do both^^
Oh, and I'm a loyalist fan boy too, this is what I did a 30k Emperor's Children at first: to do the EC without going rogue !

I dislike heresy Typhon, but pre-heresy the dude was bad-ass. How many marines sat on a grenade to save some generic infantry men? There's a reason pre-heresy DG were so well liked (before they got all chem-y)
To OP: depends on what I want to fluff/play that game. My DG I have fluffed out as loyalists, who are possibly gonna go the whole "save the baby or the mother' dilemma and fall..... eventually

My World Eaters are definitely traitors, I painted the dead/dying marine on Kharn's base as an Ultra Marine
I have, however, been toying with the idea of getting some loyalist Death Guard, mainly so I can introduce people in my area to 30k but also because the Death Guard are my second favourite 30k legion.

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I play Blood Angels mostly because I loved them in 40k and already had a good deal of heresy compatible models. I also very occasionally use my 40k Chaos Marines as Isstvaan V traitors.
If I had the money I'd quite like to make a small (not much larger than a single BaC box) Loyalist Emperor's Children Army lead by Saul Tarvitz with Rylanor The Unyielding representing a force of proud survivors on Isstvaan III.

So Loyal. With their multiple examples of traitorous actions like attacking Imperial forces, summoning Daemons even after being ordered not to use ANY psychic powers by the Emperor and being responsible for crippling Humanity in the long term. Feel that loyalty.

The Ultramarines formed a second Imperium when Guilliman ASSUMED terra would fall. No one has called him a traitor because? We're it not for his actions, the Dark Angels, Blood Angels, and most of the UM legion would have been at Terra before the seige, and the traitors would have lost horrendously.
The Space Wolves, MULTIPLE times, attacked fellow Astartes, both with and without permission. (i.e. night of the wolves, or whatever it was called when Russ attacked a still loyal Angron)
Dark Angels went half rogue, still team-kill to this very day, still considered 'loyal'. As well as the Scars going half rouge as well.
The Thousand Sons used psychic powers after a blatantly biased 'conference' that was used to placate the anti-psyker Primarchs and the Lords of Terra AND was being fiddled with by the changeling. They never summoned daemons for battle use, but familiars (and still it's debatable that those familiars were malevolent daemons). As for crippling humanity in the long term: How was magnus to know what the Emperor was doing when that dumb-ass never told ANYONE what his plan was? Especially since he intended for Magnus to sit on the throne by the end anyways? Had the emperor had foresight (or at least the decency to check on the info Magnus delivered) then a whole lot would have been avoided.
The ONLY times Magnusite Thousand Sons have attacked imperial factions are: 1) The burning of Prospero, 2) the battle of the Fang (in revenge for Prospero, and 3) This new 'battle of the Fang' and we have no fluff on that yet at all. When it comes to Chaos, even Ahriminian exiles hate Tzeentch for what he's done to the legion, but are no longer associated with Magnus and the Thousand Sons legions. Or are we to assume the Ultramarines Traitors because multiple UM chapters have fallen?

1. The fact remains they knowingly and willingly broke a law quite happily.
2. A LOT would have been avoided if the Emperor had a brain. The Thousand Sons are still traitors though.
3. The Battle of Prospero where they could have easily surrendered to the Custodes.
4. So you have the Magnus faction who waltzed into the Fang slaughtering a Loyalist Chapter and knowingly devastated their long term plans. Then you have Ahrimans faction who potter around doing Chaos stuff. So you Thousand Sons are still traitors they're just not very happy with Tzeentch. We assume they're all traitors because they all have participated in traitorous acts.
