Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?

UK

Something a little different this month, over the last 18 rounds there have been a few themes that have made second place in consecutive votes, but never actually got to being an actual challenge theme. Thought I'd dust off everything in that category and stick them all up here, the third time will be the charm for one of these!

Out of Place: Your entry should consist of models used for something other than their original purpose. For example this could be a Fantasy mini given the Inq28 treatment, an Ork as an Orc, or a historical mini with a fantasy, sci-fi, steampunk ect. makeover

Slow and Purposeful: your entry should be a model or models that are considered slow, lumbering or otherwise clumsy. This could be something with a below-average speed on the tabletop, or just a model that looks like it couldn't get anywhere in a hurry.

It's a Kind Of Magic:- Your entry must be magical in nature. Anything from a 40k Psyker to a Malifaux Necromancer, a Warhammer Mage to a magical construct.

Fear of the Dark: the model should be associated with night/darkness/shadows. Anything from a psyker dealing in dark magiks to a shadowy, stealthy assassin in the shadows.

Big Guns Never Tire: The model must be carrying some significant firepower. Anything goes from a pair of Grots comically trying to wield a Lascannon to a mighty Baneblade superheavy tank, a Dwarf engineer with a collection of blunderbusses to a great cannon or trebuchet. Dakka Dakka Dakka!

Supporting Cast: The model should be one with a non-combat role, such as a medic, musician, standard bearer, spotter, general or engineer ect. Note these models may still carry weapons, but preferably posed and painted as to not be using them.

So, what do we want to paint in September? 2 days to vote!

Voted for 'Supporting cast' - have a couple of little fellas from my Inquisitor's retinue; psyker, sword bearer etc that should fit the bill.

I still think the "Anything but Orks" suggestion was the best 'cause you know, feth those guys.

On a serious note, this is the rare poll where I could actually make something for just about any of the topics, so I'm looking forward to being back in the running come September!

I can perhaps come up with something for most of those...I voted slow and purposeful because I plan on buying some Wraithguard soon.

Supporting Cast would fit my Armies on Parade board - Tanith and their backup.

Edit: Typod.
Can I do Supporting Cats if it wins?
I have so many cat miniatures.

I voted for Supporting Cast, but I could almost certainly do something for every category:
Out of Place: This would be the hardest one for me to make happen, although I could just paint up my lone Stormcast Eternal Liberator and have him facing off against two Chaos Space Marines or something. Parallel universes, with Chaos forces in both.
Slow and Purposeful: I will most likely do a Tau Broadside Battlesuit if this one wins.
It's a Kind Of Magic: I'm putting together a Chaos Cyclopian Cabal on bikes right now; if this one wins that'll be a suitable painting project.
Fear of the Dark: I would probably do a team of Tau Stealth Suits for this one.
Big Guns Never Tire: My Dark Angels have a Predator that could use a little painting love.
Supporting Cast: Yet another Tau possibility, in this case a couple of Ethereals.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2024: 40 | Total models painted in 2025: 25 | Current main painting project: Tomb Kings

I vote for It's a kind of magic. I can pick up my Wolfen hybrid from a couple of challenges ago.

That said, I got lots of stuff for Fear of the dark, too. Lots of undead, a couple of spellcasters (not syre if they'd come across as necros), and some Rackham Aberrations.

Seriously though, the Slaughterpriest doesn't fit any of those categories really! :( Guess he stays on the front of our White Dwarfs for a month lol.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

I’ve got something for everything, except maybe “out of place” I’d have to think on that one.

Enter 'out of place' with a model done for another category and it's automatically out of place and therefore valid.

I went for Magic on this one just because I don't think we have done anything of that nature before.

Went for that too, which I'm sure has nothing to do with the shiny new Eldrad mini, no siree!

One vote in it between Magic and Supporting Cast (or, indeed, Supporting Cats), I'll be interested to see how this turns out...

...um...what happens if we get a draw?

the two in the lead are probably the best options for me out of the list anyway, so I don't mind either way

I would assume that Para would just act as a tiebreaker. That or some sort of steel cage deathmatch.

Magic does seem to be making a nice rally. I was thinking of doing the SM Librarian on my bench for like half of the choices anyway, so no real big deal for me. Supporting cast might see one of my 30k consuls instead.

Should we just start going down the list of Queen’s greatest hits for suggestions for next month? All jokes aside, I just looked at the two albums in my playlist (Greatest Hits and Classic Queen) and counted 15 tracks that would make great entries...

I’ll dust off the librarian.
