The drama hails from The Jackal Group and marks the return of former COO Joe Earley to the network.
Fox is looking to put a new spin on King Arthur.

The network is teaming with The Jackal Group's Gail Berman and Joe Earley to develop Camelot, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The drama, which landed at Fox in a competitive situation with a script plus penalty commitment, reimagines the legendary stories of King Arthur in a police procedural. When an ancient magic reawakens in modern-day Manhattan, a graffiti artist named Art must team with his best friend Lance and his ex, Gwen — an idealistic cop — in order to realize his destiny and fight back against the evil forces that threaten the city.

Dan Frey and Ru Sommer (Black List feature script Bleeding Kansas, Fox's Saint Patrick) created the project and will pen the script as well as executive produce alongside Berman and former Fox COO Earley.

The effort marks the return for Earley to the network after the executive's October 2015 departure following a 21-year run. Three months later, he reunited with former Fox entertainment president Berman — with whom he worked from 2000 to 2005 — as president of Berman's The Jackal Group.

Camelot marks The Jackal Group's third project in the works at Fox, joining the upcoming Rocky Horror Picture Show reboot and comedy Mattress World from Jay Lacopo, which is in development.

Frey and Sommer are repped by Verve, Madhouse Entertainment and Myman Greenspan.

Familiar IP continues to be in high demand as broadcast networks, cable and streaming services look to cut through a cluttered landscape featuring more than 400 original scripted series. For its part, Fox has found success with its twist on Sleepy Hollow, among other IP.

That sounds... dumb as hell.

Taking a good story and putting a 1000 eternal layers of stupid onto it.

Poor ignorant guardsmen, it be but one of many of the great miracles of the Emperor! The Emperor is magic, like Harry Potter, but more magic! A most real and true SPACE WIZARD! And for the last time... I'm not a space plumber.

It strikes me as pretty dumb, but who knows. When companies compete over a script, it usually has something going for it right? Who knows if it'll make it to the final product.

Sounds a little shaky, but if the cast has chemistry, it could work.

Of course, that could be said for most shows...

You know, I could see the idea working if they were all cops, with Arthur as a police captain. But, apparently, we have to be gritty and edgy and make Arthur a graffiti artist? Oh, AND put the once and future king in America?!

King Arthur in a gritty, urban setting, huh?

Why the hell (in this age of the comic book movie, no less) won't someone just turn Matt Wagner's Mage into a movie or series? It'd work beautifully. And I know there were scripts floating around in the early 2000s.

Yes, please!

Now that would be awesome - and someone's basically already done all the heavy lifting for them too!

Honestly, I can see it happening. And actually having Arthur outside of the police fits the Arthurian style better than making him a cop. After all, Arthur needs to build himself up to power, by making him a cop, he is not only already in power, but under another master.

That said, there are so many interpretations of the Arthur story out there that this one isn't some huge boat-rocking event.

The rights got picked up in 2010. But since then, mum's the word. Fer crissakes, we have a world in which League of Extraordinary Gentlemen got a film, and they can't get Mage made despite being, oh, I dunno...10 times a better concept for the medium? Mark Millar can scrawl something on a cocktail napkin and get a feature film made, and we can't get Mage?!?

It'd also be nice if Wagner delivered The Hero Denied sometime soon. But then I know the Mage stuff is very personal for Wagner (Kevin Matchstick looks just like Wagner, which tells you something), and so it'll come when the stars are right.

In the meantime, get a Mage adaptation done, Hollywood!

I don't like the initial premise.

I also don't like "Graffiti artist named Art."

What's his name? Art.
What's he do? Art.

(And yes I understand that's them modernizing the name Arthur, as if it's somehow sooo archaic.)

Soooo, will Excalibur be a magic can of paint or something then? Or a fancy gun maybe? Will they go to Central Park and take it from a no doubt drugged up lady there?

There is not this idea.

This is pretty dire sounding, but really the worst part is that someone decided we need yet another police procedural. The Camelot nonsense is just icing on the cake. The horrible, horrible cake.

I don't mind the idea of re-interpreting an old story, but honestly this sounds like it's about one talking dog away from being the perfect "what the hell was the studio thinking" story that will show up on listicles for years to come.

The fact that its yet another police procedural really seals the deal.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Fox has a fairly awful track record with Sci-Fi/Fantasy so even if this miraculously turns out to be good I still wouldn't trust it.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

TBH I'd rather have a series about this than the above.

I thought for sure you were going to link to West Side Story...

I think I'll pass on this one. Sounds like something the SyFy channel would turn down.
