I gave in slightly to temptation, and ordered the Steel Legion Commissar. Just to complete the Command Squad. Now if only the Squat moulds still survive.

I wonder if they have considered digitizing the models and 3D printing them?
They could easily make their entire back-catalogue available.
Or at the very least character-like models that would not typically be part of a sprue of models.
It would be interesting if they could offer a Shapeways-like experience.
It sure would be an improvement over the Finecast mess from the past.

If they are aiming this made to order system recapturing lost ground from eBay?
They need to be more competitive with postage especially with small numbers of figures.

Panic...

If those figures are available in such quantities and prices market is obviously saturated... Why enter that market at all?

My guess would be since GW kept some of the metal IG range in production they actually have sales numbers for this range and can now guestimate how well it did.

If they bring back something long OOP they will have literally no idea who well it will sell. 1? A million? Who knows.

And they don't look at ebay because the internet is a fad

Sadly I think they were destroyed years ago in the great purge along with the moulds for the fimir etc. Presumably the greens and masters may still exist so it would be possible to create new moulds for them if required.

There's been allot of stuff under the "Webstore only" heading since the inception of the new webstore. I quite often have a gander through the 400 or so item s they have listed if I need to make up a few quite to get free delivery.

The Imperial missionaries or Pyskers are good models still hidden in there. Many of the Imperial Guard regiments that often get listed as OOP on eBay have been constantly available all the time - not true of some of the special/heavy weapons choices though which is why this trial looks like a good thing.

Did you get him when the Cult Mechanicus range first launched?

Because a number of the first production run were mispacked. The Dominus I got via my local GW had the wrong base and the manager had been sent a bunch of 50mm bases and instructed to have customers open their Dominus in the store to check the bases were right.

Aw man, he never told me that when I bought mine. I was wondering why it was on such a small base.

If you didn't get it at launch, it wasn't something that they were thinking about as still floating around since the mispacked ones were supposed to have been sent back but since the Dominus was popular enough that people were placing orders for them...some still slipped through from the warehouse.

Well they don't have huge need for finding out how much they will sell. Okay so there's bit of overhead if they put something that sells only one and somebody has to cast just that but doubtful anything they put would sell that badly anyway.

They get orders, they cast, they pack. If somebody doesn't sell much they aren't casting that much either.

It's FREE if you ship-to-store, which is what I did.

For the Techpriest Enginseers, it's cheaper to buy from GW than via eBay, due to shipping charges vs ship-to-store.

The only bulk item was the Kasrkin, which GW is keeping open. The rest are smaller adds, in case you didn't have enough already.

That's why it's "made to order". GW takes no risk here. If it's 1, fine. They make 1. If it's a million, then they spin up a million. No big deal.

On eBay, for every buyer, there is a seller. Net zero sum.

I see most stuff except the Kasrkin and Macharius are marked Sold Out now. Shame as wouldn't have minded picking up some of the Tallarn guns at a later stage Still it's got to be said it's an excellent scheme by GW Credit where it is due. Picked up the Steel Legion Commissar and Captain Al'Rahem last night and spurred on to buy some more Tallarn and Steel Legion units over the next few weeks directly because of this scheme.

I think the business case is really there for them to do some more 40K universe stuff (Arbites, Necromunda) but with the disappearance of WHFB it's probably less likely that some of those oldies will come back under the scheme (Teutogen Guard, Dogs of War)?

Absolutely If they did a proper release of the regiments I'm sure they would sell out quickly...would love to see the Alcatani Fellowship and some of the other troops in the scheme!! Oh and they would really pull the rug out from under the ebay recasters and scalpers

No, please.

If GW re-released Dogs of War, that would put a serious hurt on my wallet, because I'd be looking to buy Birdmen and Beorg and bulk up Vespero's & Braganza's boys. It'd get expensive in a hurry.

Same if GW were to re-release Necromunda. Arbites, Cawdor, Van Saar, Ripperjacks, and special characters...

I really doubt it. IG always had a large proportion of fully metal models, so they were a good place to start. The thing all the models had in common was either being odd one offs (solar, the tank crew) or replaced by a completely plastic kit.

If I were to guess at round two, I'd look for something like space marine veterans in metal, metal terminators/Deathwing/Wolfguard, or librarians/chaplains. From Chaos, we could see the old raptors (great models!), metal terminators, or possibly sorcerors. Necrons are actually pretty rich, with Immortals, Pariahs, Wraiths, Spiders, and Flayed ones all currently in plastic. Tyranids have a lot of mid sized gribblies (zoanthropes, biovores, lictors, ravenors). I'm not sure if there's a real demand for the OOP grey Knights, but they could reprint those bad boys.

Ironically, the IG have even more models on the bench. The pre-Kasrkin stormtroopers go for a really nice price on eBay, as do Praetorians, although GW has basically chosen to forget about them.

The real question is how well the specialist games stuff would do.

and the metal veterans were tasty models, too! Like the Kasrkin, they really hit the sweet spot where they have the full iconography while not dripping in skulls.

How can items that are made to order be sold out?? You make it when it's ordered, yet sold out before it's made?

the gimmick seemed to be that they were all available for 48 hours, but longer for things that were selling. I'm guessing the "sold out" items didn't sell out, so much as they didn't sell at all, and so they're only leaving the popular items for sale.

It's not entirely dopey. It allows them to spin up some metals for the hard core collectors, but to focus on the things that are actually popular.

They only took orders for 48 hours, and the cutoff was yesterday evening. As of today, GW knows exactly how many widgets to produce and deliver.

Yah I got him when it 1st launched. The Problem at this point is that I already have him painted and mounted on a scenic base that's 40mm because I thought that was what he was suppose to be on. lol

It's not the end of the world, I'll get around to getting some 50mm's and rebase him when I feel like rebaseing my Legionaries to 32's. (I use clear bases from litko, so not to bad to swap.)

Don't know if important, but on the German site (not the UK or US one) the subtitles of the banners with Tallarn, Mordian and Valhallan squads you'll see when you enter the 40k section are the following (translated): "order them now before they're out of stock". "last chance to get them" and "your last chance to get this squad of Valhallans". So maybe after the Made to Order models they remove the remaining ranges too.

If they brought back the diaznettes and seekers they would be minted.
Original price was £8 for 3 nettes and £7 per seeker.
I'd pay that in a heartbeat for them.

Need 20 more nettes for my wave of 100 and I refuse to buy the new things.

Also need 5 more seekers so I can have 2 units of 10.

I was about to rage a bit at the fact that I didn't even get to order things before they went out (it was an eventful weekend) then I saw this and it all made sense.

Rountree didn't have many screwups but I consider "discontinuing" this to be one of the bigger ones, right up there with Tom Kirby's "Lets make annual price hike" levels of stupid. If these are made to order it literally costs them nothing beyond the page's banner space to keep it available. There's no overhead beyond the standard metal and resin they should already have for other models. I hope they decide to reverse this decision and return them to being available; it would be a shame to lose these models to the sands of time again. For a brief moment it was like the old GW bitz Order was back.
