Looking forward to the freehand on the Raider sails should look really good!

I'm liking the idea of Heresy legions with increased features based on the societies they take inspiration from. Renaissance Blood Angels sound really cool, as does Pagan Word Bearers (as a lover of technobarbarian stuff, that's a bit of a winner for me).

Apparently the original Terran recruits for the Death Guard legion (or rather, the Dusk Raiders as they were before Mortarion) were taken from the kingdom of Albia (Britain).

Could do some cool little touches to make them look WWI British somehow...

It’s OK to shift gears on your blog. I started mine primarily to showcase my re-booted Eldar army, but a bad batch of primer and a new release of marines shelved them for over a year. Should be interesting to see how you do wolves.

If you want a historically connected 30k legion, you really need to go with the Ultramarines. They are roman legionaries in space. Blue is also easy to paint. And studies show that UM players are smarter, more skilled, and better looking then other generals. And while some may say we have an excess of smug hubris, I say we have exactly the right amount!

On another note, if you already have a 40k Space Wolf force, it might be worth getting a 30k side to them. They are a lot less "Wolf Lord McWolfson, armed with wolf claws riding a thunderwolf", and more “angry space vikings” which could also scratch your historical itch.

I don't believe its the generals with the Hubris, its definitely the Athenian Ultramarines, the generals are just fine. But I don't think the Space Wolves really do it for me in 30k, simply because I don't like their scheme and I hate the idea of doing two of the same army.

Two votes for Word Bearers, which is interesting. I really like the look of the Gal Vorbrak and I have enough bits to make them look incredibly pagan-ey.

I do really like the idea of a 30k legion that takes heavily from their history so whatever impulse buy I make, it'll for sure be at least sorta cool.

Hey guys, sorry for the bitter lack of updates, I have been working really hard recently on getting my minis based and painted for warhammer world, and the coming up of finals hasn't allowed me much time to really focus much on dakka besides going on during my lunch break but obviously I can't provide many photos then (although I believe I know a way to remedy that so no worries)

I got a ton of deathwatch done, like quite a bit, I got a librarian, a flesh tearer, an Imperial fist, a space wolves pod and I have a WIP cassius and a blackstar.

the blackstar's body looks very bland right now, and I don't really know how to remedy that. I was thinking of painting on some red stripes but I really don't want to do more red on an already very red model. I was also thinking of purple as that is the tertiary colour of my DW, however, I believe the cockpit will be purple so I don't want too much colour in one area.

Alas, here are some more subpar photos!

So extreme grey edge highlighting would break up all the black on the black star.

Everything is looking great by the way.

DW is looking fantastic dude. I agree with EDC, when working with black I feel it's really required to go very extreme with the edge highlight. In this case codex grey or administratum grey would really make those lines jump. It'd also help bring out the lines of armour on your DW infantry. Important to note here is that since the blackstar and DW armor is metal light would hit it and rebound very harshly off the closest edges, so when highlighting things like that it's ok to go with a high contrast edge highlight in a very sharp line. On cloth is where you'd use more gradual and soft highlights that tend to "bleed" over the rest of the area more.

Hope this helps man, keep up the great work!

Nice Deathwatch I remember the Little Camera, Big Results thread having some nicely painted deathwatch with strong edge highlighting to give an example of what it can look like.

Yeah I actually have a brighter highlight on my infantry, I feel its a bit more necessary on them, however, I guess I was wrong.

I actually forwent the extreme highlight on the Corvus, simply because it felt a bit like the first highlight (Eshin Grey) popped enough.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Something I've found with my highlighting (or relative lack thereof), is that for it to show up nicely on photos it needs to be on the heavier side. Not sure why, but photos seem to flatten out the colour difference compared to real life...

I could be wrong here but I believe it has something to do with our eyes vs. the capabilities of a camera.

In short our eyes are capable of picking up much more variants of colour when we looks at somethings, different shades and values are noticeable to us, in fact some people have "super eyes" that can see more colours than the majority of the population can, kind of like a reverse colour blindness.

A camera on the other hand can only see a set amount of colour variance. As such many photos of models with lots of blending and smooth colour transitions will get flattened out. Cameras have a particularly hard time registering dark things or places (unlike our eyes which adjust to darkness over time) and so black is a particular challenge for a camera to take a photo of and show different values (such as the edge highlighting on a black model).

That wasn't short at all... anyways in person the highlighting may very well pop out a lot more and be much more noticeable but unfortunately photos are showing us something different than what you may be holding in your hand gummy.

Hey guys, sorry for the lack of output, and serious pictures, however, I did get everything done in time.

It was a mad rush to get all of the stuff finished and based, however I somehow managed to do it.

I finished two vanguard vets, and the cockpit and highlights on the Corvus Blackstar... I am really happy with how it turned out.

I will give some actual updates in a few days when we get to warhammer world, and some more DE (or 30k if I pick some up at WW)

Speaking of 30k... any suggestions on which legion to play? I am legitimently on the fence between BA, Word bearers, Sons of Horus, or Deathguard.

Update time!!!!!!!

I went to Warhammer World today, for almost all day I think and I was completely blown away. The staff was incredibly kind, very patient, the Forgeworld store had some awesome options (get to that later) and I got an awesome game in.

First off- I settled on a legion for 30k, I am definitely gonna go with Word Bearers, and I might have a tiny little start to the army, but I don't think they will receive substantial creation for a bit.

Second- I played an awesome game today, it felt amazing using a completely painted army, and even better to use some DW! All the pictures turned out terrible, but that is alright, nothing super epic happened. My librarian and entire squad of deathwatch got sucked into the warp, which was hilariously disappointing. Everyone preformed well, and I think that my list will get some tweaks but those will come over time.

Additionally, the dioramas were insane! Every single collection of shown models completely blew my mind. Every single mini was very well painted and I spent hours looking at all the tiny little mini stories in all the dioramas.

Finally, my purchases! I grabbed a leviathan Dreadnought, who will get space wolf-ed up once I get back to the states, I also got every exclusive model they sold (I think), which is awesome. The Praetorian and Sorcerer are gonna be my brother's as I forgot to grab them for myself, I also got two sets of the command tanks, only one is going to me, the other will be my brothers. He also grabbed Kharn the bloody and Angron which I'll be painting for a small fee, and I am very excited. I also grabbed up some Forgeworld Space wolf Land Raider and Rhino doors to further glam up the Command Tanks.

I apologize if this post was very long winded and uncoordinated, my tiring day and messed up sleep schedule due to time zone changes have left me a bit goofy.

Thanks guys!

Thanks EDC

I got back to the states today, and immediately when I got home I cracked open my Leviathan and started putting it together.

Needless to say I got it finished, it only took about 5 hours

My first time working with Forgeworld Resin, so I always underestimated the drying times on my super glue and messed stuff up over and over.

Overall however, I am happy with how it came out. I will hopefully play a game with him tomorrow, and also start some paint on him. On the top left of his carapace there will be the jagged triangular pattern that space wolves tend to love (Is what I am saying even making sense? I am incredibly tired so I apologize.)

Word Bearers are gonna happen soon enough, I need some daemons as they will end up constituting lots of my force, simply because I like them a lot, There'll probably be a bit of Khorne, or Slannesh and Tzeentch, whichever I end up buying on a whim . BAC will also be coming up soon(ish), but I have a lot of SW and DW left to paint before I start an entirely new army.

Thank you for the support guys!

Sorcerer is gonna get built today while I'm waiting for a game at my FLGS.

Then I think I will get some paint on him, I am debating a darker scheme or a lighter scheme?

Either Khorne Red with mephiston red highlights, or mephiston red with Evil Sunz Scarlet highlights... Any ideas? Also, any ideas of energy colour? I am thinking of a very matte green? He is summong a demon so it's gotta be a cool colour

Hey all! Time for a well deserved update, be thankful I do not come empty handed!

I got a lot done in the past week or so! And have actually planned out and started my next army!

My Space Marine Command tanks came the other day, and I built the Rhino Primaris, I still have to build the Land Raider, especially if I want to use it tomorrow, but hey, I'll get to it!

I also painted my first bloodbowl mini, I did red and white inspired by the Tosh.o skit "Kiffins Krimson Korner" as that is basically all the football I have been exposed to, I have started on two others, but they are being neglected for the time being because of!...

Daemons! Specifically of the Slannesh variety. I got 10 daemonettes built last night, and the first test model painted this morning. I'm building an 1850 point list, and you might have seen a few posts on here asking for help planning them out. They will be allies to my Word Bearers, but I want to get them done first as I am very very intimidated to enter HH, and the high entry cost has been putting me off, as I rarely come by enough for BaC, and the singular kits are laughably overpriced.

For whats down the road, Daemonettes are gonna get painted, the bloodbowl human team will too. Afterwards, it is kinda unclear. My local GW is doing a secret santa that I entered, and I put both DE and SW on my list, so whatever I get will probably decide which army gets the attention through the winter, it is quite difficult because my SW love the snow on the ground, but my crazy Archon loves the bipolar weather we have here! I might pick up a daemon kit or two, but they are gonna be a slow grow project. Also, does anyboby have an idea of how to customize 3 different soul grinders? I don't want them all to look the same.

Thanks guys!
~Mikey

Never seen a SM tank like that before. Command tank? It reminds me a bit of the SoB for some reason. Your blood bowl guy came out great, that white is very crisp and clean. That daemonette looks great, I assume it's mostly washes over a couple base colours? What you gunna do for basing on the blood bowl guy and daemonette?

Thanks guys!

The command tanks are WH world exclusive, I didn't have enough luggage space so the guys at WW were kind enough to ship it to me free of charge.

The gold on the Daemonette is almost entirely washes, but the skin is just a few coulors layered on each other pretty normally, just warpfiend grey, druchii violet warpfiend grey over it again, then a highlight with Slannesh grey.

No clue about the basing on either. The BB guys probably needs mud and grass, but I don't have the materials for either. Any ideas for the Daemons?

Mud and grass feels like a good call for the BB team. For the daemonettes the sky's the limit. I'd base them in whichever base you do your WB in but if you don't know what you want to do there yet then I'd vote for a snow base. My word bearers are on snow bases and I love the look, the colours compliment each other well.

Wow, I don’t check you thread for a little bit, and you succumb to the worst kind of heresy! Word Bearers, ugh. DIE!

(Sorry, I’m in enough trouble with the Chaplain lately, can’t let stuff like this slide )

Nice looking dread and command rhino builds, looking forward to them getting paint.

Blood Bowl guy looks sharp. That white should show the blood splatters well. Nice work on the demon, Love the color tones on the skin/claw, and the golds turned out well.

Super cool update the Command Tanks look good, as do the human BB guy and the daemonette. As for the soul grinders perhaps some nice slaaneshi greenstuff bits? I mean you can't really go wrong anything sharp, pointy or tentacle like will pass as a CCW or something like that. Perhaps have a look around for some 3rd party bitz?
Nice work!
