Star Trek: Deep Space Nine first aired in January, 1993 well over a year after the death of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. When compared to The Original Series and The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine was written off as too “dark,” “edgy,” and “the black sheep” of the Star Trek family, a show that did not fit Roddenberry’s vision of the future. But someone was still watching as the show lasted seven seasons. Now, over twenty years later, fans all over the world are rediscovering Deep Space Nine and embracing the show with an enthusiasm rivaling the affection they feel for any other Star Trek series. Critics are even calling the show the Jewel in the Crown and the best of the Star Trek franchise. A devoted sci-fi fan might rightly ask themselves; “What the hell happened?”

Our documentary film, What We Left Behind: Looking Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, will take a detailed look at this historic series and consider the reasons Deep Space Nine went from a family outcast to a Star Trek mainstay. The film will also contain a “what if” segment in which the original writers brainstorm a theoretical 8th season of the show.

Spearheaded by original show-runner Ira Steven Behr, directed by Adam Nimoy (For the Love of Spock), and with a handful of key interviews already 'in the bag,' the #DS9Doc now needs YOUR HELP to reach completion by finishing filming, editing, and post-production.

You couldn't make a Deep Space Nine documentary without talking to a few of the actors. So we spoke to a few, then a few more, and a few more after that. We have been fortunate to have wonderful participation across the board from principle cast members to the people that brought our favorite reoccurring roles to life.

Also involved... 5 of the DS9 series writers put pen to paper, to map out the first episode of a mythical season 8. We will reveal more about the writers room as the campaign progresses.

Behind the camera, this documentary will be produced by the team from For the Love of Spock, including director Adam Nimoy, producers David Zappone, Joseph Kornbrodt, Kevin Layne, Kai De Mello-Folsom, and editor Luke Snailham.

Has always been my favourite. Got a little too soap opera'ish in the last season but still great.

I recently finished DS9 on Netflix, and I really enjoyed it. It had the right mix of grimdark and levity, as well as plenty of drama without too much of it (mostly). I rank it third among the six series (including the Animated one), after TOS and TNG.

This documentary should be pretty good.

As I recall, its biggest criticism was that it was trying to ride B5's shtick, not that it was a bad Star Trek show.always liked it.
( I certainly liked it.)

Of the two at the time, I enjoyed B5 far more. So was very down on DS9 at the time.

Watching DS9 on Netflix a couple of years ago, I was impressed. Probably my favorite of the Trek franchise. I prefer the continuity rather then the monster of the week episodic ones. Sure, there was the occasional one-off or lame holodeck episode, but the series hung together rather well.

I agree.

It was much better with the ongoing arcs and some of the characters really got put through the wringer in most enjoyable ways.

Complimented TNG well IMO.

Plus it shared other similarities L

Next gen. only really gets good when Riker gets a beard whilst DS9 gets good when Sisko shaves his head.

... ideally there'd be a similar correlation with, perhaps, Janeway's hairstyle but I don't know Voyager as well and suspect for them it picks up after kes leaves rather than due to superior hair care.

B5 is the superior show IMO. DS9, however, is still quite enjoyable, and probably my favorite Trek show since it first aired.

I used to watch some DS9 and enjoyed it, but somehow Star Trek left me behind about that era. I only saw a few of the Voyager series.
It coincided with getting a wife who doesn't like SF.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

For me I find it reversed. B5 started great and became meh as it went on. by the fourth season I just wasn't having much fun watching it anymore. DS9 was the opposite. Started out meh, but as it went on I liked it more and more.

B5 had pacing problems at the end, but it wasn’t their fault. IIRC they didn’t think they were going to get renewed for the 5th season, so kinda rushed everything in the 4th. When they did get picked up, the final season was mostly wrap up, filler, and spare plots.

Had the pleasure of meeting with Adam Nimoy and Terry Farrell at an advanced screening of For the Love of Spock, they are very recently dating (she and my wife had a good laugh about dating shorter guys, my wife introduced her to her term for it, the Wolverine effect...) and he was discussing a documentary about DS9 at the time, just after I'd been fanboying at Ms Farrell about how much DS9 was my favorite Trek and how much critical success it held.

The series final immediately came to my mind when I heard the title.

Hopefully it has fewer long, wistful looks at each other and nothing happening (do yourself a favour and NEVER watch the final ep of a trek tv series. You'll thank me later. Yes, I understand the concept of "denouement" - but it doesn't make for compelling viewing - and in many cases, only needs allusion, not actual lingering scenes of nothing.

And this won't get locked up with that nonsense regarding fan films and need to be hacked up into two half hour segments? ¬¬
