I don't know about using them in Fallout, but they could find a great home in my games of This Is Not a Test.

Nice to see that we'll get a West Coast expansion. Looking forward to seeing the models.

Sounds very promising!

For those with the RPG book, does it add much to the campaign play and things of that nature?

A group of friends and I are collecting minis (ready for when we can actually start getting together and gaming again) and I think I'm probably going to be lumbered with being the admin/GM. So far I have the main boxset, Settlement and Raider Decks to go from.

We'll probably be doing a quite soft/narrative type play rather than tournament/competition so is the RPG book designed to be used with that?

I believe so. Much like the "full" RPGs from Modiphius that I've played, the Wasteland Warfare RPG expansion is (in my opinion at least) primarily narratively focused and requires a good bit of GM discretion. It has nowhere near the amount of specific rules for any situation as for instance Pathfinder. It's more of a framework that adds necessary RPG elements to the wargame elements the base game has. It's complete and functional, but I don't think you can play it very well if you don't trust in the good intentions of the GM. But I'd say that about Modiphius's RPGs (that I played at least) in general. They're cooperative a lot more than competitive.

I can't really say from experience what it adds to campaign play as corona kind of got in the way of all my Fallout endeavors, but I'd say it depends on whether you are fine with mixing RPGs with wargames. Wasteland Warfare does have RPG lite elements, but you don't actually have to roleplay anythung. The RPG expansion is an actual RPG, so any time you play it you'll have a different or expanded experience due to roleplaying.

Pretty much what Geifer said.

You could possibly take the choose your own adventure campaign and turn it into an RPG game with multiple people (as it does require the RPG book) but it would be, at each choice, everyone agreeing on the decision and no one really being able to act individually until the combat.

There's also a 2d20 version for Fallout RPG coming out sometime probably next spring (there was recently a refresh of the rules for beta testers so it's not going to print any time soon) if you'd prefer more of a traditional RPG. The FWW one is interesting as it's a minis game first with then RPG stuff so it's a much more tatical game as opposed to other RPGs. I've not really run it myself but it seams like it tries to not fall into some of the problems other "combat is 90% of the game" RPGs like D&D 4th fall into with non-combat abilities but character creation is pretty simple as you're basically making something that could be used in the regular tabletop game.

Even if you just do a settlement mode/narrative mode (which there is no GM) version of the tabletop people might enjoy having custom characters.

This is absolutely true. I initially picked up the RPG just for the means to create custom FWW characters and IMHO it is very capable in that respect; As for the product as a whole, I don't think I'm doing it a disservice by describing it as an expansion for FWW rather than a standalone RPG. If you want the latter, you are probably better off waiting for the 2D20 system. What the RPG expansion excels at is giving you the tools to deliver the complete CRPG experience. You already have all the combat rules you need in FWW itself, and the RPG book gives you rules - and some guidance - for the other stuff. It also comes with plenty of character options for fleshing out your character and giving them a chance to excel in those "other stuff" areas. But the whole time, it will feel like you are adding more options to your FWW games.

If you consider a typical Fallout 4 mission, what does that usually entail? You talk to an NPC who gives you a quest, you travel there (probably getting into a few fights along the way). You need to find something (a prisoner, a mcguffin, whatever) and there are some bad guys in your way. You will have a couple of ways to handle it, and probably at the end there will be some kind of skill challenge, followed by a 'boss fight'. This is how it breaks down when you have the two products:

1) You talk to the NPC who gives you the quest. This can be one player reading out the mission text, and optionally, one or more players asking to use one of their RPG skills to get more information or increase the reward.
2) You set up a random encounter - lets say the party have an equivalent caps cost of 350. Give them maybe 250 caps worth of creatures to fight and the objective is simply to beat them.
3) As a post mission option, allow players who have the appropriate RPG skills or perks etc to try and heal the party. Others might use the rules to craft basic supplies. Otherwise their health state persists to the next mission as do their consumables.
4) You set up the actual mission with lets say 450 caps worth of adversaries. Maybe have a terminal here which unlocks the back way in but needs two successful skill checks to bypass. Can also be used to change the ownership of the turrets needing one skill test, but the terminal will lock itself out after you make your choice so the player has to pick which. Maybe randomly pick one of the outer perimeter guards and when you try to fight him, he surrenders. Skill checks (Threaten, bluff, bribe etc) to try and get the key which also unlocks the back door. Critical success maybe gives you the keycode to a locker with some goodies inside. The rest of it plays out with the FWW rules, with hostiles reacting once they can see you.
5) You interact with the objective and you have a choice to make, without necessarily knowing the mechanical benefits of the outcome.
6) The players agree on what choice to make and either the mission ends, or it results in a final fight.
7) Post mission, the players collect their rewards.

What this requires is some planning to figure out the mission, the difficulties involved with the skill checks and the options. This is not unlike the "to do" list of any GM, but I would argue the fun comes as much from the tabletop combat as it does the fun of participating in the 'lite' CRPG mechanics. For that reason, I feel it is more viable to be a Player and GM than it would be in a more traditional RPG, though somebody still needs to volunteer to be the guy who takes on that extra work, and there is enough scope to the mechanics added by the expansion that you could feasibly have a non-combat character and still be useful in most sessions as long as the person who comes up with the mission provides enough options. I suppose a good comparison here would be Rangers of Shadowdeep, where the 'roleplaying' aspect comes though via more skill checks than would otherwise be called for in Frostgrave, and with a bit more reading of scripted events linked to the choices your characters make, and with more opportunities for pre and post game skill checks to have an impact on following missions. Sure, all of that could be done by a GM, but I'm willing to bet Joe can have just as much fun playing adventures he has written himself even though he knows how they will play out. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there writing mission that you can re-use, myself included, and now that Modiphius have put out that solo RPG mission I am sure it will be followed up by plenty more.

In short, as an expansion to FWW I highly recommend it. As a standalone RPG, one where theatre of the mind and character interactions would be more prevalent than putting minis down on the table and getting out the range rulers, I would not recommend it. It just leans too heavily on the FWW mechanics to really be worth playing without them IMHO. For that, wait for the 2d20 offering

I'm really interested to see how the "into the wasteland" rules (random location generation with random NPCs and enemies) translates into the FWW RPG style of play as I think it can make the GMs job much easier.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Thanks a lot for the info guys - really appreciated.

That sounds like exactly the kind of thing I was hoping for. I'm happy to take a 'soft' GM approach as the guys I will play with aren't murder hobos and I don't take any delight in wiping out parties on a whim. Think that's definitely enough for me to pick up a copy and start thinking about a campaign!

Is 2D20 the system that was used with the Infinity RPG? If so happy to give that a miss, based on the couple of times I tried it (as a player rather than GM) it just seemed ridiculously complicated and my character died during the player creation phase (which didn't leave a good impression I'll be honest )

yes but 2d20 is not like wizards d20. They heavly change it between settings to fit the setting so really the only thing that's consistant is the dice mechanic, momentum (the generic term for it) and threat.

Infinity is the most complicated version of 2d20 by a very long shot--it doesn't help it was sidelined during writing and a different team picked it up after months of no progress and then rushed the core book out (it's had a very rough development period) and there are admitted areas that weren't reworked that were in a rough state. And dying is actually part of the setting since people wanted a way to start with a Lhost body.

A buddy of mine is in the 2d20 beta and I've played some. It's much closer to say Conan in complexity and actually does a good job in may ways of matching the feel of the video game. Thats why I enjoy the 2d20 system. The designers change the system, while still being enough of the basics you can understand it easily if you've played another one, to match the setting so the rules support the setting.

Oh, that completely passed me by. Any chance of posting the Enclave pictures here? I'd very much appreciate it.

Some people have already gotten theirs via retail pre-orders. Apparently Modiphius doesn't do release/street dates so as soon as a store gets them in they can sell them.

Its #FalloutFriday folks.

First up, a new community focussed initiative to get folks playing, hobbying and sharing as part of their Wasteland Warfare gaming.
https://www.modiphius.net/blogs/news/the-undiscovered-vault-fallout-fridays?utm_content=bufferf4e40&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer&fbclid=IwAR0lGSBvYM8DfQWKF7jJ3LXd7n5P8aEOALAe_FLaRybn0JLy4A6BLZksIqI

Secondly, we've got a few new releases to tide us over until next month when the Enclave start to drop.

We are releasing the T60 suit (Aspirant Goddard) and the Aviator Super Mutant in resin from the 2player set as single figures.
We've also put the latest organised play kits up for general sale. Its a tough time with many of us not able to get to stores to play, so we wanted to give everyone a chance to get hold of the OP kits (and those ever helpful luck dice). Containing dice and scenarios themed around various release waves, they are good fun for solo, co-op and PVP players for sure.

That's a really nice idea trying to get the regular community events going and for linking them through the social media platform.

Also that some of it is for hobby time (modelling, creating terrain etc.) as I think a lot of people can't meet up to play at the moment.

I might use the deadline of a month away to try and get some terrain or at least a model or two completed, it's helpful to have the prompt for action!

Aye, spot on. We want to help folks ignite their gaming, but at the same time stay safe. Good news is the game can be played solo, or if you are lucky to have friends in your "bubble" you can play with then you can go that route.

Or, if gaming is just impossible right now, paint a model, or make some terrain.

One of these a month will hopefully give everyone a bit of time to be involved and hopefully share their progress with us each week.

Cool initiative. I hope I'll be able to participate at least occasionally.

Nice to be able to get those lovely luck dice. Themed scenarios may be cool, too. So far I've demoed predominantly with the contents of the starter set, but people do have their favorite factions and if I can accommodate them easily I won't say no to that.

They are quite novel scenarios for sure. A little more narrative/fun that hardcore PvP but that's not a bad thing.

This is the kick in the pants I need to get moving no my Fallout models.

Need to get my Institute and Raider starters painted and get started on all the Super Mutants I have unopened still.

Especially now that Barzam has his Enclave guys and I'm sure that's what he's going to want to field ASAP once it's safe to play in person again.

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

If you can handle digital platforms we have a free Table Top Simulator module that does do a reasonable job for getting games in online.

Its only got models for the 2P starter set contents, but if you don't mind proxying or modding then you can do a decent job of playing. Its what we are doing for playtesting a lot right now.

Why is this the first time I've seen the Machine Frequency RPG scenario? And that it's written by Matt Goetz? Adding that to my cart.

I think today is the first time we revealed it.

I met Matt a few years ago via my work on pp conventions and he’s an awesome guy.

Might be doing more with him in the future for sure.

Into the Wasteland is coming out this week. Pretty excited about this but might overhype it like I did the choose your own adventure so I'm trying not to get too excited. Still, looks to be like it's going to be mostly what I wanted from it.

https://www.modiphius.net/blogs/news/into-the-wasteland-part-two

* Cards are drawn for map size. Can be odd shaped and smaller then the standard 3x3.
* Environment card is drawn and this helps determine what factions you'll likely run into as some are weighted more heavily to a specific
type. Same with items and salvage.
* You know at least one of the multiple factions when you start the map. Others are hidden and only act when you get close enough to see them (really curious as to how this works).
* Enemies have a new AI that they follow while unaware of the player(s). Once you attack or notice them they shift to their standard AI. (will be really useful for RPG games I think)
* New Legendary Creatures that follow the multi-card system that Frank uses.
* Cards are print and play. Chris said on facebook some will be printed eventually (most likely the Legendary Creatures as those have been up on the website in the card list for quite some time). If Into the Wasteland gets a print versions Modiphius will offer a discount (for webstore orders only) to those that bought the PDF version.
* There's a campaign mode that adds a sense of urgency and timing to make you decide how much time you want to spend on each map hunting for resources as how quickly you can make it to the end effects the difficulty of the final battle.
* Plans are in the works for a large scale campaign with a story and random maps ala the video games.

I'm looking forward to that release because I may be able to integrate elements of it into the campaign system I've come up with. To be honest I was kind of hoping to have mine complete by now so it didn't look like I was copying Modiphius but it seems that ship has sailed lol

They state in the articles (and the first one I didn't link as it wasn't as informative) that due to COVID it's a PDF version but it does seam odd that if there wasn't at some point a planned print version that they went with cards for generating the map, environment and so on instead of just dice. But then again the dice these games use aren't the best for large random tables.

Into the Wasteland sounds good to me. I'll echo the sentiment that it would be good to have a physical version, but if circumstances don't allow it at this time, that's just the way it is.

Now that there are rules for Brahmin, hopefully a model isn't too far behind.

This looks awesome. I have been following the Friday updates avidly, there is so much material incoming (the biggest challenge I think is keeping up with it!)
I love the sounds of the campaign incoming- will help those of us without the time to make what is almost approaching D&D levels of world creation.

Monkeysloth thanks for the breakdown, that's really useful

As a reminder, we have a Fallout 'post your projects' thread down in the Misc Sci-fi section of the forum, please feel free to use that as it will make a great resource!
