I've decided to start an Astra Militarum tank army, themed around Soviet Russia. What do you think of my test model? I'd love your thoughts on the theme. I'm more of a gamer than painter, so going for a quick paint scheme rather than high detail.

Up next will be Knight Commander Pask(ov) in a Punisher.

Nice, simple but looks good. Loving the mud/dust staining.

Looks good. Could use some white hand-painted propaganda or some red flags - and wood/fuel barrels on the back

Looking good, theme is great. But I agree with elbows I think you should push the theme even more. It really gives the tank character to add those extra details.

Thanks guys.

I've gone for decal slogans rather than hand-painted, as my freehanding is terrible.

For Pask(ov) I want to model a flag draped across the turret, like on this model from Battlefront Miniatures. I'm thinking green stuff maybe? The hammer and sickle will of course be replaced with the imperial eagle

Great stuff. I like the simple precise approach.
Only crits would be to continue the dust around the tracks and buy a 2mm drill bit to drill out the heavy bolters.

Thanks - I'm very much going for the practical, non-flashy approach. These guys are there to fight wars, not look good on the parade ground. That's what Space Marines are for

Update - Pask's tank is now complete. Just waiting for some more Soviet slogan decals to arrive.

Thanks

Yeah my intention is to drape a flag over the back of Pask's turret, like the model above. It'll be red like a Soviet flag, but with the Imperium Aquila in the corner rather than the hammer and sickle

Very nice comrade. Have you thought of doing other Tank Commanders?
Warmachine's Khador or Anvil's Regiments would be a good start for bits

They look brilliant! I'm very fortunate that my local place to battle is Warhammer World, but the downside of that is that all my stuff has to be Games Workshop products.

Hi, very nice blog. I really love the green colour, what is the brand of it and what paint have you used?

If you wish to add Soviet/Russian style tank helmets I would recomend you: https://madrobotminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=9_10&products_id=23

I used the new Death Guard Green spray from Games Workshop - really quick and easy to paint

Thanks guys

I've got some new Soviet slogan decals, so have added these. Next up will be my third tank, probably a Demolisher. I think the decals really add to the look, what do you think?

Any Russian speakers know what they say?

Коммунизм means Communism

А. Невский means A.Nevskiy, Alexander Nevskiy, Russian hero, who stopped Swedes and german knight order from gaining Russian territory/ invading Russian lands in 13th century. Later he was proclaimed as a saint.

Green is spot on by me.
Tanks look great. Weathering is decent which is nice IMHO.

Awesome thanks pal I'll come up with some cool reasons why these Astra Militarum tanks have those things written on the sides of their vehicles!

I find the weathering just about perfect myself - alot of it looks overdone to me.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Clearly many of the imperial guard speak something like russian, so I wouldn't sweat it - just throw some aquilas in there!

If you end up wanting to do the red flag draped on the turret, dip a sheet of paper cut to the right dimensions in elmers glue, then arrange it on the model. The paper is usually strong enough to hold up to being manipulated, folded over in a couple places, etc, and looks like cloth once dry, but is pretty tough. just use fingers to remove excess glue before applying. This works great to cover stacks of barrels and boxes with tarps, etc. as well.

Looking better all the time. Slogans really add to it. Now need some big Red Stars or Red Aquilas.

You could try soaking paper or fabric in a water and glue mix, kind of like how people use gauze for camo nets.

Have you seen the Aeroflot logo? It incorporates both
