What wizardry is this??

"Since the figures and items are cast separately, we can create unique character poses and highly ornate accessories that are not always possible with traditional miniature castings. The separated items also allow for easier painting."

$20 for a single sub-par miniature.

$12 each for the all in.

Oh and a bunch of stupid looking weapons and accessories with MASSIVE hands.

People are seriously backing this?! Its got 5X the funding!

These would look bad even 30 years ago.

A little harsh maybe Pete, but I have to agree. These do not look very good, and I am having a hard time trying to justify the price and even the purpose.

Most games have their own miniatures, and the standard these days is so high. I don't think any board game or miniature game I've seen in the past years have had minis this mediocre.

Also, magnetizing is not a hard thing to do, so if a mini comes with multiple choices, you could get hundreds of magnets for the price of this Kickstarter.

The idea is awesome, but yeah, the execution is a little lacking. The giant hands would have been fine if the miniatures are a little more stylised, but as is they just look a little odd.

I can see them being popular for RPGers, though, where the versatility is worth more than sculpting quality.

I'm picking up these mini's for WYSIWYG gaming and boardgames. GW games since forever have had or suggested you match the equipment on the mini with what they were statted with. I've had games of HeroQuest where a figure would have one weapon for several quests, then wield a different one for several others. I also guess it kinda bugs me in an RPG where everyone in the tavern is readying their sword!

EDIT: OMG Frying pan unlocked!

They'd be better off getting rid of the female models and just saying they don't sculpt women... those hands!

Yeah -- some backers want gnomes and halflings. Mebbe those hands will work with the women's!

Anyway, I figure these figures will save me time painting for an RPG group. The next time a player changes his mind at the last minute and says, "Oh, I think I'll have my fighter WITH a shield, instead of WITHOUT", I can do a hot swap, instead of punching him in the face.

EDIT: "The female sculpts will be tweaked to be more proportional for the final production molds."

Not really my thing, I wish them luck. I am a bit amazed how well it is going but people like gimmicky things.

That said I have done and experimented with things like that (Puppets War and 40K). Puppets War miniatures majority of joints are magnetic so swapped out arms, vs just hands. Although interesting, it ends up being more fiddly and annoying than anything. Because of varied weights and the magnets don't' always hold them in the right positions, bumping the table causes them to rotate or just fall off. Moving miniatures around can cause them to fall off (even if you do a magnet in the arm/wrist and one in the hand).

I would have preferred to see them simply doing arms that came off or on vs just hands, it would have been more pleasing to the eyes (no large funny hands) and allowed them to do more dynamic posing.

I think they will work out for RPG dungeons and groups but not so much for miniature wargaming. That is my opinion though, your mileage may vary.

This is a great concept for RPG players and I would have loved models like this when I played D&D.

Being able to equip your character on the fly or as new items are discovered is a pretty fun feature.

I agree arms would be better than hands. Though some people like big hands.

the problem with arms is you'd need an arm for every single mini with every single weapon, huge amounts of moulding and casting hassle

eg 50 right arms x 10 minis = 500 different items to keep in stock

a generic (even though it's not going to look great) hand is so much simpler

I do this for some of my 40k models. The hands for them are big, and all the same.
This, maybe using longer magnets in the hands might have shrunk them down a bit.
For Mordheim or something, much more useful.

I'm also astonished by the success of this and that it's currently trending towards 70k.
While the concept is good, it's nothing new. I also find the miniatures lacking.

But I guess they did their homework and created a product a specific group of customers want.
So... good for them.

Post away any other mini's with magnets and stuff! I'd like to see what other magnetized miniatures there are out there.

Nice to see them doing well, but not for me.

Every time I start a new army, I'm always like "yeah, I'm gonna magnetize everything and it'll be so cool and everyone will tell me I have the awesomest army" then it turns into work and I end up with like 2 magnetized minis out of 100.

Yep. Hand of Glory does all the magnetizing work for you. Frying pan, Flaming Hand Set, and Demon skull unlocked!

Also: "We’ve decided to extend the $135 early bird to last through the weekend, so if you’re in the $140 group and feel like switching, go for it, and if you have friends you think might be interested in HoG let them know about this super secret extended early bird! Now through tomorrow (Sunday, 7/16, 11:59 ET)

EDIT: These miniatures can be used in boardgames whose characters equip different weapons during the game. Of course, the Hand of Glory sculpts aren't as good as the boardgame ones. Like these.

Spoiler:

Well, okay. You'll never find a boardgame miniature like that wizard on the left.

Spoiler:

What? Guys dressed in yellow pajama tops holding copper pipes and showing off their family jewels (the ring on their boxer glove hand) isn't your thing? Well, how about boardgame miniatures as beautiful as any illustration.

Spoiler:

For boardgames, most boardgames prefer to match the illustration with a miniature -- which almost never happens. Close enough is fine when the characters are significantly different, but not when they're similar (eg. Magician vs. Illusionist). So, one way to distinguish one miniature from another is by their equipment.

Oh, and then there's Magic Realm. See if you can spot the miniature.

Warning From Magnus? Not Listening!

Really not a bad deal at all, and except for the giant hands the sculpts really aren't as bad as people are suggesting - bit bland and dull but not disasters. I can see these being a success with the kind of RPGers that buy all those expensive dungeon tiles and the like. building and magnetizing models isn't as central to that hobby as it is to wargaming.

Neat idea, but the ham hands kills it for me. Also, I've given up on such fiddliness. Even for an RPG the dude in armor is Bob's character, whether or not he actually has the shield equipped. A little abstraction is acceptable. Switching bits on and off painted figures has it's own costs....

Also, comparing them to other crummy figures or decades old figures just makes you look bad. I mean you could just as easily hold them to KD or Conan minis, which are far superior sculpts. They are what they are and will appeal to some for function, but not top line aesthetics.

Those Sausage fingers really do hurt it. the models them selves are pretty generic old school style which im sure a lot of DnD types will love.

but got to say i love a lot of those detail and accessory pieces. would fit well in older GW Fantasy stuff. possibly even newer ones.

I know a lot of people have posted similarly to the below, but it might not be too late for the creators to adjust since these are metal casts.

The only thing that needs tweaking is the hands, specifically the size of the fingers. Otherwise, the sculpts are pretty nice and the idea is cool. Just resculpt the fingers and job's a good one

They kinda need meat fingers otherwise it might not be enough material for magnets to fit in.

otherwise they could of made them thick gloves. though it would be odd for the majority of a fantasy setting running around with asbestos welding gloves

The Hand of Glory creators posted a pic of a Hand of Glory miniature against another fantasy miniature.

The hands are large, but I don't think players will really notice during tabletop play.

GeekDad: "The hands are slightly overlarge. This doesn’t notice too much on the hands holding weapons, but the empty hand I have is slightly out of proportion. If you look at the pictures on the Kickstarter page, you can see this is the case, but I would have to say with the miniatures I’ve been sent, the hands, though slightly on the large side, are in better proportion than the Kickstarter pictures suggest."

Again, these miniatures are best for RPG's and boardgames (eg. replacing standees).
