FFG had a very specific game design style. Trying to drop it on another studio without the personnel behind that style wasn't ever going to make fans of that style happy. Honestly with how far ahead hips production has to be, I'm not sure Asmodee even wanted AMG to do anything other than fake a smile and get the stuff in the pipeline out the door. Honestly they were already treating X-Wing and Armada like that when they were still under FFG.

I honestly wish they had given it to CMON. While they have their issues, they at least know how to run a full-bore wargame. All AMG had done was crisis protocol and it shows IMO.

I can't laugh any harder at this.

CMON knows how to run a full-bore wargame? That's news to anyone who actually plays one of their games.

At least they've got one, which is more than AMG's got. Like, going through their roster, FFG and CMON are the only ones who have any previous experince with running a wargame at all, even if you may dislike their handling of it. Everyone else is board games besides AMG who had crisis protocol which was a wargame even if it's small scope.

CMON isn't really doing wargames, their larger game is still more a boardgame as it is a wargame, which has it's advantages but doesn't mean there is any more experience in doing something like Legion over AMG with MCP.

In addition, their style of games and releases wouldn't have worked well with Legion either, and they would also have struggled going forward without having people from the old team

The main issue is if no one in the studio actually plays the game, and this can only be solved be a dedicated person handling it, no matter which company or studio is doing it

CMON had Dark Age and Wrath of Kings and they just flushed them for high revenue IP driven Crowd Funders.

I am somewhat looking forward to a refreshed Legion though. SP took off locally and I think it's not unreasonable some of these lads will be interested in giving Legion a go.

Have I read through this all correctly?
AMG are "X-wing v2"ing Star Wars Legion?

I don't play often, but I have a ton of models and all my cards in sleeves, organised, boxed etc.
X-wing v2 was a disaster where I play and killed the game and all enthusiasm for it totally.

Currently most played: Silent Death, Mars Code Aurora, Battletech, Warcrow and Infinity.

They are in the midst of a refresh of the game yes. The new ruleset came out digitally last year and there were adjustments to some unit cards (though a fair few of the physical ones were outdated at this point anyway). Main changes overall are to deployment, cover and the missions (and standard point size is now 1000). Core mechanics are otherwise broadly the same. Everything is getting re-printed in the new style, even if the actual rules haven't changed. Whether one would want to attribute the negative connotations of 'X-wing v2' as a comparison is probably down to personal taste. There is a lot of new stuff in the pipeline which is obviously a major distinction from X-Wing.

At this point give development back to FFG and let Wargames Atlantic print the plastic.

You're right, they should have just stuck with all the normal human sculpts and not given any options for customization whatsoever. 🙄

Yeah, let's not be disingeneous by assessing there's only two possible options there /s

Bit surprised they didn't include something like them in the new objective set; AMG usually love putting Star Wars critters and droids in their terrain and the like.

Lot's of nice stuff. I didn't expect to see Hondo. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

The Empire starter set looks good. No frills, just new troopers and a Vader sculpt I like.

I hope the Clone Trooper marksmen box comes with Phase 1 helmets as an option - it is a bit weird seeing a whole squad rocking DC15As when they were only issued like that at the very beginning of the Clone Wars, with the DC15s carbine quickly replacing them as the standard infantry weapon and the DC15A being relegated to a 'special' weapon.

Can't recall it being mentioned but they tend to put both phase helmets on the kits; I'm sure they've said that the regular Clone Trooper kit comes with both so there should at least be plenty of readily available Phase 1s leftover.

AMG dropped all the 2025 cards for Legion yesterday and it's a huge mess. They've even taken away units (iconic and fun things like Palpatine!). Honestly screw AMG

I see the upgrade cards are now full size, just like X-Wing (RIP) and to make matters worse, the card names are on the bottom of the card now.

This is fine for a core box game using just one character and two squads per side, and for the new player where that core box is the only thing in their collection. But this is a miniatures game and for AMG to turn a profit that means encouraging players to buy lots of SKUs to add to their collection and play bigger games. Those cards are now going to take up more table space (quite unnecessarily) and they are going to be harder to organise. Nice one, AMG..

Not had a chance to go through the changes yet (there were rule changes too) but removing 6 units from the game was not the best of moves. Removing flaws, load outs and contingencies I feel was probably a good idea as it could be extremely difficult for new players to keep track of/wrap their heads around.
The updated cards I have seen are largely positive though, unless its a CIS command card...

Reading between the lines, Palpatine and the Royal Guard going wasn't an AMG decision but Lucasfilm now having a different stance on how they wanted them presented and there wasn't a compromise in how to get a version of them back into the game. The upcoming Imperial High Command has elements of the Palpatine rules (basically confirmed that Tarkin is going to have a version of 'Pull the Strings'.

Rebel Pathfinders going is slightly odd, though I can see the logic given they occupy a very similar design space to multiple other Rebel units and don't offer anything distinct aesthetically.

The 3 generic commanders that have been removed haven't exactly 'gone' as such. They're getting replaced by the customizable commanders coming later in the year that will have options to make something similar (amongst multiple other builds).

It's never fun to lose units but personally I don't think it's quite pitchforks at AMG headquarters level considering the most jarring ones don't appear to have been their choice and the others are getting a spiritual successor.

That's super weird. Curious how they want Papa Palp presented that would cause that. Like he was always a little odd to be on the battlefield directly, but fun regardless.

Shick is still at AMG. Pitchforks until he is gone because he keeps screwing up games.

I interpreted it less as "lucasfilm didnt like this representation of palps" and more "we dont think it makes sense for the emperor to show up on the battlefield". That line of reasoning is very on brand for schick and co across all their projects.

We'll likely never know and it's probably some combination of multiple factors. I'd just think it was fairly telling that the LFL factor only got brought up when discussing the Palpatine/IRG removal (across multiple interviews).

"It might have been LFL but we'll probably never know" isn't enough to let AMG off the hook for me, tbh. There are also no points updates in this release despite multiple cards crying out for it - the AMG facebook post announcing this is complaints all the way down.

This is from the interview Will Shick did with Grey Squadron Gaming...

And it seems more like AMG just wanted to be able to use what Palpatine and the IRG did on other new minis.

It really feels like saying Lucasfilm told them to cut those minis is just an excuse for not knowing what to do with the minis that they wanted to pull rules from to use on other stuff.
