That's super weird. Curious how they want Papa Palp presented that would cause that. Like he was always a little odd to be on the battlefield directly, but fun regardless.

They couldn't outright say but the inference was that Palpatine was involved in future projects by LFL/Disney and they wouldn't sign off on a presentation that might contradict that. Quite what they'd do with Palpatine as a character that would be such a drastic diversion from his existing portrayal is beyond me but licencing approvals are a weird process and it could have been something really pedantic or specific

And it seems more like AMG just wanted to be able to use what Palpatine and the IRG did on other new minis.

It really feels like saying Lucasfilm told them to cut those minis is just an excuse for not knowing what to do with the minis that they wanted to pull rules from to use on other stuff.

Mhm, as I said, par for the course for Schick.

See last post on previous page, seems pretty clear it wasnt an LFL thing.

I don't play Legion myself at the moment(WEGD64lyfe yo) but if the previous page is "par for the course for Schick" then he seems like a completely reasonable designer with logical thinking? Palpatine was always an odd duck in the context of a wargame and was likely only ever included because FFG & Lucasfilm were always obsessed with things being "iconic" rather than them making any particular sense(see the endless parade of Extremely Specific Troopers who are all Stormtroopers which are the entire military, because every new thing's toy being super snowflakey for marketing is more important than a coherent setting).

If AMG's intention is to steer the game more towards being a wargame in the Star Wars setting rather than Nuhuh My Favourite Character Could EASILY Beat Up YOUR Favourite Character! Wars - which the customisable leader and operative units suggest they might be - then retiring the character and unit that require you to tie your brain into a fractal pretzel to justify their presence on the table and using the design space they were occupying to enhance and enable other things is completely reasonable. Sucks for people who bought the models sure, but them's the breaks and now the turns are tabled; as people who are fans of using movie characters in every game always used to tell people who wanted Your Dudes - guess you'll just have to find something to Counts As.

Following that logic though why any named character? What are they doing involved in all these tiny skirmishes? And why Krennic? He wasn't even a soldier but an administrator.

Seems that's why Shadow Collective has been ignored the last year or so as well based on a Maul announcement from LFL this morning.

There isn't any logic to it. It's a swindle so they can sell new models. Couldn't even be bothered to make it a "legends" character or whatever so people can keep using it. Thanks for the cash, enjoy the unusable figures.

The trouble with your attempted argument is I do follow that logic - being required to use named characters even though it often makes no sense(and is kinda boring) is one of the main reasons I never took to Legion. Krennic probably shouldn't be in the game either, nor Tarkin nor even really Thrawn(although he at least sometimes likes to get his hands dirty) so by all means cull them as well and use their design space for more reasonable characters.

Shadow Collective has been ignored since the mini faction dropped, can't really say that AMG's continued pattern of ignoring them and a new Maul teaser is honestly anything other than circumstance.

AMG (and they inherited them from FFG) have consistently tried to temper expectations by saying that Shadow Collective aren't a full faction and won't be supported as such. They're a Battleforce and somewhat limited in scope. Not entirely ignored given they're getting a new core choice (pirates) and the speeder tank but I wouldn't be surprised if the new Maul show broadens the scope (including the rumoured Darth Talon-esque character). There's always Savage, Pre-Visla, Crimson Dawn and possibly Nite Owls.

Due to the tariffs, AMG have announced that the June new releases have been postponed in the US. Appears they are still being released in June elsewhere.

For Legion, this means the Outer Rim Outlaws and the IG Assassin Droids.

To be fair, Asmodee's distribution is haphazard at the best of times so the tariff situation is just going to be another thing to pile onto the reasons stuff gets delayed in some regions. UK is still waiting on the March releases. Bigger concern for Legion is probably the new starter sets/card packs.

The jedi council look good, I'll also need at least one of the jedi barc speeders.

Not so thrilled by the seperatist leaders.

Not played much since the rules changes, and the amount of card packs feels very X-wing 2.0 death of the game territory. I wish there was just a starter pack with the rules and all the cards / movement sticks etc for a reasonable price.

it's the quiet ones you have to look out for. Their the ones that change the world, the loud ones just take the credit for it.

I feel AMG sidestepped the X-Wing issue by offering all the cards as print&play.
If you want to spend for them, go for it.
Between the P&P and the various army list apps like Tabletop Admiral having the card text accessible mid-game, there are options if you are on a budget, or have a massive existing collection.

I am looking forward to the Separatist & Jedi Council boxes.
Not hyped about the Imperial High Command.
I don't really think Krennick, Tarkin, or Thrawn should be on the battlefield.
But the bench isn't deep there for mid-level known characters, I guess.

And if they are in the thick of the action, could they perhaps be doing something, anything at all, besides all "standing around thinking", like the models display them? If it wasn't for the fact that one should be painted blue and another has a cloak, they'd be near-indistinguishable from a small distance on the table. Pretty uninspired. They could have had, say, Tarkin with his arms folded behind his back and it would already have added more variation than what we get here!

Tarkin I agree with to an extent as he's only ever really 'in action' when younger in a Clone Wars episode and recall him not being particularly fond of it. For whatever reason, Palpatine got removed and Tarkin is his de-facto replacement in the game (inheriting his special rule). At least they've acknowledged that he's not an effective combatant with about as terrible an attack as one could wish for.

Krennic is shown getting his hands dirty in Rogue One and it's not like he's a particularly great fighter in Legion. There's a reason he dovetails very nicely with Death Troopers to guard him and his rules pretty effectively convey that he's a support character; if he is in the firing line then he's probably in trouble.

Thrawn, for all that he's a genius strategist first and foremost, is constantly in the thick of the action in his novels and he is more than capable of kicking backside. I don't see a problem with him getting involved at Legion level. He's still primarily a support commander in game, he's just one that is outright decent if he does wind up at close range.

I'm just happy to see Mudtroopers. I've been waiting for those guys for a long time, and I guess I'll be waiting just a little bit longer yet, but at least they're on the horizon.

On topic of troopers, I'm of course familiar with weirdly specific Stormtrooper designations, but Wet Weather Stormtroopers managed to raise an eyebrow regardless. What, unless you're in a specialist formation, it's against union rules to throw on a poncho and go outside when it rains? When did these guys become a thing?

As someone who can't for the life of them remember which is which out of Space Marine Eradicators, Devastators, or a Desolation Squad, or between an Inceptor, Infiltrator, or Incursor Squad, and would struggle to narrow down which facition or even game/setting an Akhelian Allopex belongs to (40k? AoS? Necromunda? Warcry? All of the above?), I am so absolutely in love with the simplicity of "wet weather Stormtroopers". Does what it says on the tin. Necessary? No idea. Maybe, maybe not. Who knows. Who cares? I'm glad they exist and are called exactly what they are. Delightful.

The are briefly in Solo alongside the Mudtroopers but yeah, it is conceptually a bit silly. Much of the 'Malibu Stacey's new hat' about them but honestly, the models look awesome so I don't even care. They're going to be in a new battleforce with the Mudtroopers based on the Solo scene and sounds like the emphasis is on the Stormtroopers being the elites that the Imperial Army conscripts/ammo fodder are relying on to function cohesively.

That's true, of course. Leave it to GW to show us just how much worse things could be.

Pretty sure its mostly so they can have a unique name to label the box on the toy aisle more than a useful in universe military designation.

Having not followed the game too closely and only knowing a fraction of the former and current expanded universe, I wonder how much creative freedom AMG has to just make up stuff if they'd want to keep expanding the range?

Without ever thinking about it too much, I think GW did rather an good job with the Middle-earth game: while they didn't succeed (or even bother) with all factions, I'm mostly a fan of how they expanded the range with new troop types for various armies that would otherwise be limited to "the one thing we saw in the movie". Star Wars feels similar in that, and in greater need of realistic variation given the spatial scale.

Currently building some Napoleonics, and it's striking how much flavourful variation there still is in even an army from a very brief period of time from a limited geographical area and from a very uniform(ed) period.

Along with the reveals shown there were also 2 new battleforces released, expansion to the Shadow Collective one, a new primary and secondary mission and faction specific advantages.

They seem to have a good working relationship with LFL and some of their recent releases/previews are, strictly speaking 'original' designs so there's a degree of freedom there (though obviously everything has to go through the approvals process). The Stormtrooper Riot Squad don't actually appear 'on screen' in Star Wars so the Legion unit is sort of an amalgamation of the concept; there's the riot control troops from Andor (though they're probably a subset of the Imperial Army judging by their gear) and the riot troopers in Scout Armour from the Cal Kestis games. The Rebel Guerrillas they previewed in the recent stream are also a completely 'new' unit. Apparently they were originally based on the idea of the Rebel Drop Troopers that Cara Dune (sp?) from Mandalorian was part of but that evolved into the Guerrillas who seem to be almost partisan type squads fighting with what they can steal from the Empire.
