Hello everyone!

My inquisition needs some heavy guns, and since Inquisitors don't tow around artillery or battle tanks (always, I know sometimes they do) then I figure there's nothing more likely to happen than an Imperial Navy airstrike.

My Inquisitor already has a Master of the Fleet, and with a kitted Thunderbolt I can cram the list up to 1815 - but ironically, if I drop the Thunderbolt and add a Marauder (really either variant) I end up with 1995 points; almost exactly right.

SO!

The best question is: Is the Marauder Bomber or the Marauder Destroyer the best choice?

I'm using it for tank-hunting, so I lean towards the marauder destroyer (8 Hellstrike missiles!) but the Marauder Bomber is neato also...

I don't think the bomber is any good. So for me it's easy, go with the destroyer.

Okay! Now to find out if the Destroyer can go in that neat FW bundle, or if I can find one in the US.

And how to base it.

I just finished building a Bomber. It's such a cool fricking model, and man can you pump some Mortal Wounds out with that thing.

I had considered getting one; other than mortal wound pumping, how else has it handled in play? How did you base yours?

I just finished assembly, haven't had a chance to play it yet.

For basing I just used the flying stand it came with. As long as you center the peg right, seems to hold up just fine.

I fail to see how it can pump out mortal wounds. Against a vehicle it can only do 3 max. Additionally, many individual models in the game don't count as vehicles. And any unit with lots of models are typically not going to require mortal wounds to kill.

Yeah 3 max per vehicle/monster, but up to 10 or 12 (depending on the bombs) on infantry units, and it can do that three times per game.

Also it looks cool. That's good enough for me.

On paper I would say the Destroyer, it has soooooo many guns, plus it can also do the bomb thing once per game, which if its a massive target for the enemy you won't get as much mileage out of anyways on the bomber. Thats going to be 6 Autocannons (thats 12 Str7 Ap -1 D2 shots) another 12 Str 6 Ap-1 from the dual assault cannons, AND 8 missiles, which equals 8 Str 8 Ap-2 D D6 (roll 2 take the highest) and all without taking the -1 penalty for moving. On top of being the equivalent of a flying Knight for stats. The destroyer will utterly wreck anything on the table, pretty much any vehicle on the board can be one shotted by the thing and if I recall its around the same price as knight as well

edit, theres a twin heavy bolter on there too, cheers!

The destroyer. It's got enough guns to make girl and more weep pure joy juice upon seeing it and if you want any particular target dead, it WILL be dead.

The bomber is better for certain applications due to its greater mortal wound capacity, but the destroyer is the best "all rounder" that will turn ANYTHING into a greasy smear in a shooting phase.

It's a gunship on steroids. You thought the vulture was a boomstick? Nope. Stand aside boys, the ruler of the skies has returned!

3 Vultures.

I love my marauder destroyer immodestly, but for 50 points more, you get 120 s5 shots at bs 3; 22 more wounds at the same toughness profile, and 3 units (deployed as a squadron) that can hold objectives. You also don't need to take a LoW slot to fit them, which can matter.

If you're intent on tank hunting; spreading the hellstrikes around 3 vehicles and adding in twin lascannons makes a lot more sense than investing the whole of your anti armour in one model. Vendettas are arguably viable here as well.

Hell, 120 s5 thrown at a leman russ will average 9 wounds anyway. Add in the MOF bonus and it gains the structural stability of a sheet of cardboard.

Finally it makes a bit more thematic sense to have close air support gunships, than a space to surface interdiction flyer available to an inquisitor at short notice.

That said; the MD Alpha strike is a joy to behold. I have made significant dents on titans with an opening salvo.

As for basing; I personally got sheet perspex cut, but you *can* use a normal flying base for them. Before the perspex I also used the base that comes for the Onager Dune crawler for peace of mind and that worked fine.

just beware, the MD is freaking HEAVY.

But isn't the gatling cannon BS4 due to moving and then adding the +1 vs non FLY back on? With only a 24" range you're going to have to move at least once. Sure a couple of turns it's a horde killer, but, it's not going to delete anything every turn. It will take all 3 of them to kill a single 5 man marine squad in cover on average. They still out perform the Destroyer though, when not taking the bomb into consideration. However, i'd rather have the destroyer against anything T5+ or that has FLY.

I think I'm going to use the Marauder Destroyer, because it does have a ton of guns...

but what flying stand does it come with? I feel like it would be VERY HUGELY STUPIDLY difficult to get to work on a traditional GW flying base. Does it come with a different one or should I stock up on clear plastic dowels and like, build a custom base?

Addendum:

Also, don't forget it's going to be in an Inquisition list (did I mention that in the OP) and will be the only source of the list's Anti-Tank other than smite spam. The Destroyer's 8 Missiles seem to fit this role better than the Bomber's Mortal Wounds + 2 Lascannons.

The Marauder can also cream light vehicles with the 12 autocannon + 12 assault cannon shots while the missiles go after the big stuff too, I think. Sound plausible?

I think you've mixed up your numbers somewhere; the *twin* punisher is 40 shots; one static Vulture kills almost 6 marines in the open, and 3 in cover average - 4.4/2.2 when moving. The HBolter does quite respectably too at bs 3/4.

There's also the benefit of mix & match ; take skystrike missiles for a respectable Anti-Air which doesn't suffer *that* much for Air To Ground attacks on the vulture, add in missile pods for a bit of long range anti infantry, or my recent favorite of 18 Hunter Killer missiles for one hell of an alpha strike.

Now don't get me wrong; the MD is love, but as in everything IG there's serious risk in overinvesting in one target unless you can support/defend it easily. The MD is at a serious disadvantage there.

It comes with a standard GW flyer base, as a joke. Even if you could somehow get it to stay on there without immediately turning into a heap of resin fragments it will look stupid on a base that short. Expect to mount it on an acrylic rod (IIRC mine is on 1/2" diameter rod, 3/4" is better but I don't have a base drilled for it) and use a titan-sized base for it. You need that weight and footprint to keep it stable.

I live in Lexington Park (so not terribly far from you!). With the holidays and suchlike coming up, I'm not sure if I will have the wherewithall to order in the short term - what kind of timeline where you thinking about, though? I had intended to get a Thunderbolt for my 1.5k list, anyways.

Actually, since shipping is a % of the order's value (!), I don't think you can ever save money on shipping however you do it.

I mean, completely free express shipping is pretty neat! The issue I am having is I would like to order it sooner rather than later; the fact that the Marauder is cast-to-order means it can take a long time to be packed and shipped depending on casting quality, etc.

I was thinking of ordering later today; the only issue I am struggling with before I finalize my thoughts is how to base the damn thing so it doesn't come crashing down in a stiff breeze and explode. I... have doubts that the standard GW flying base will suffice.

See my previous post. Acrylic rod and a heavy titan-size base. The standard GW flying base is included as a joke.

Over 250 GBP gives you free express shipping. So if you can reach the threshold you should always do it.

I have no idea how I missed your post! But yes.

The acrylic rod should be easy enough to get (I imagine any old craft store has a 12" long acrylic rods, that are clear!).

The questions I have are: Do you have pictures? What exactly do you mean by "titan-sized" base? Do you mean wooden or plastic? And how do you mount the Marauder to it, just drill a hole in the resin for the rod to fit into?

The GW flying stand looks and works just fine IMHO. Just gotta make sure you find the center of balance for the model (which is right about smack dab in the middle of the bomb bay doors.) Make sure you glue the stand to base real good too.

P.S.

If you are going for an MD; you need to provide your own hellstrikes. The Valkyrie kit set *do* fit fine into the slots if you use the rocket pylons, but you'll need 4 Valkyrie's worth.

In my case I magnetised them as they were one use only in previous editions; I wouldn't recommend it unless you have to be creative with packing
