Hi there,
What, according to you, is The Most Important thing in our beloved hobby ? What makes you stay in the hobby ?
To my mind, the rules are the less important part of 40k. I really enjoy to assemble the mini, but most of all, to them paint and, later on, the look at them expose them.
The best of it being painting them according to a particular piece of fluff (an existing army, an historic battle...).
So I would say, for me, it is the painting and the background.
What about you ?

There's some concerns with your poll that I have. I play for the background, generally, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't play if it were different.

A different background is not automatically a worse background, lol.

I'd stop again if the player base became unbearable. Or my codex became terrible again. Last time I stopped was because 5th edition sucked hard for Chaos.

Any chance of an expanded story?

And refuse to love the Spinosaurus because it is a hamfisted attempt at taking what you loved, making it TREX +++ and trying to sell you it.

Yeah, the title of the thread and the OP itself are asking different questions...

If they changed the lore for changes sake. I don't mind lore progression, but an example of bad lore was primaras marines and cawl being a marry Sue of technology, and everyone just using hand wavium to ignore the fact he had powerful tech for 10k years they could have been used in battles, and also was doing genetic manipulation/work on gene seed. Another example of stuff that turns me off the hobby is if there were to do stupid stuff like, OH SANGUINIUS IS BACK!!!
The primaris stuff has already made me switched to playing g chaos/having nothing to do with peimaris. Doing things like knights, or deathwing ravenwing.

To many unpainted models to count.

The rules are the most important thing if the games a mess what's the point of making an army?

Fluff comes next even the best game needs a motivating story to get you interested but the best story won't make up for a bad system that's no fun to play.

The hobby aspect matters least to me I can build and paint or pop a prepainted mini out of its pack and get going.

If all I want to do is build and paint there's plenty of options besides gw.

I don't like the options.

I would quit playing 40k completely if they removed the background. Changing the background doesn't necessarily make me want to quit.

I would quit playing 40k if the focus of the game from the company was entirely on matched tournament play because the rules are not good enough for that to me, and I don't want to spend money on models I have no love for simply because mechanically they are busted and I feel I have to take them to compete.

I would quit playing 40k if the rules get stripped down even more. Right now I'm almost entirely out of 40k because the rules are too stripped down for me. I keep my toe in because I have a campaign group that lets us houserule some complexity back in. If it weren't for them I'd be done.

If I ever had to play 40k RAW I'd be done.

This is true, though I presume with the "The Hobby™" comment he meant what GW considers The Hobby™ and not "the hobby".

Voted "other" as I did stop 40K "one and a half times" already: once I quit when 3rd ed hit and I just couldn't justify all the effort and time 40K requires for a gameplay that was just as involving as a decent boardgame, especially with all that butchering to "feel" of 2nd ed and removing Harlequins entirely. I stayed a bit longer in "overall hobby" with Necromunda - untill it died out in my area.

I came back during 7th and fell in love with 40K "grand game" feel, which was again butchered by releasing 8th, but by the time I was already playing heavily modified 7th in a close group of people, so I don't care about official rules anymore. And SW:A and rumours about Newcromunda reinvigorated our love for Oldcromunda, so this time changes to 40K didn't force me out of this hobby.

Putting this into terms of OP options - for me, it is the connection between fluff/background and game feel which keeps me in - constantly having more to explore and utilize for my fun. Both 3rd and 8th eds feel too bland for me to keep me interested and excited and while I love to model and paint, I have to have something else beside "display piece" as a result of my work, otherwise I just drift away from 40K to other "craft hobbies".

If GW overcomplicated the rules again I would quit again. I stopped playing when 3rd ed came around and it wasn't until I downloaded the 8th ed leaflet that I became interested in getting back into 40K. I spend all week picking the bones out of legal and financial spaghetti, when I'm playing a game I want to play a game that I can still play after a couple of beers.

Trashing the background. If they went and did something stupid or background breaking then I'd most likely drift away. Primaris were eye opening but they made sense in a way as well as the return of Roboute as that was always hinted. If they did wreck the lore, I'd probably end up shifting over to Warlord games.

IMHO playing is an optional. I love the miniatures and to assemble themed and customized armies. I never liked competitive gaming, I consider 40k an hobby and just a way to spend a few hours with some friends.

I did that for a while. Circa 1997 when they released Epic 40,000, Epic Squats were junked. I was incensed and I refused to play the modern (at the time) rule set. Luckily, the bits service allowed me to order older models, so that stopped me quitting entirely.

I'd stop playing games if I didn't have anyone local that I enjoyed playing against. Otherwise, the potions in the poll are irrelevant. Don't like the setting? I'll use the miniatures in a setting I do like. Likewise, I don't care if GW change things; I'll go with what I like. I happen to like the Age of Sigmar setting, but I'll still happily play Mordheim of WFRP in the Old World; who's going to stop me? I already collect and play games with pre-painted miniatures; it's just a different part of the hobby.

If they ever retcon Sanguinius dying for realsies, I will pack it up and leave.

That's such a crucial moment in the whole narrative that if it was removed or changed, there would be no point going on.

This would be the only reason for me. I still wouldn't sell my armies. I'm collecting lotr since 14 years, I must admit the last 8 years I had hardly more than 2 games/ year. But I still bought minis, painted and converted every now and then and my armies are big enough to play basically every list. With 40K time for lotr has become even tighter. I'd never quit it though.

3e was pretty simple to understand.

You might want to look into craps if you want a dice game that pairs well with alcohol.
