Just a heads up on the new Ciaphas Cain novel, Vainglorious: the opening introduction by the inquisitor gives what appear to be massive spoilers. I’m about halfway through the novel and the threat mentioned in the intro has not yet revealed itself but is almost certainly what Cain will stumble on by the end. I suggest skipping the first section under the Inquisition skull if you want to avoid spoilers.



The purpose of the opening is for the author to explain the massive difference in the background that occurred between earlier Ciaphas Cain stories and this story, a difference that would apparently be jarring without the heads up. I can’t say I blame him.

Thanks for the heads up. Is the change in setting the whole Great Rift malarkey?

No, it’s a different thing. The very first sentence of the introduction seems like a spoiler.


The Great Rift also gets a mention, although it is still in this story’s future.

Vainglorious was a pretty solid Ciaphas Cain story. I wouldn’t put it in the same level as The Traitor’s Hand, but maybe with Caves if Ice or Duty Calls. The villains are more memorable than the ones from the last couple of books, and Jurgen gets a lot to do. More Jurgen is always good, although the downside of that is there was an unfortunate number of “giving me the full benefit of his halitosis” jokes.

The introduction page turns out to be a pretty big spoiler for the reveal 2/3rds through in the way that Abigail teasers telling you she’s a vampire make the first 30-40 minutes of the film a little less exciting. I don’t know why it wasn’t just inserted in between the relevant chapters.

So they've gone full Terminator on spoilers. You never want to go full Terminator.

Or Full Predator, where the first shot tells you the mysterious force hunting our heroes is an alien from outer space.

Or Full Dark City theatrical cut.

As long as it sells they will think it is the correct way of doing things. And sadly it will sell so they will continue.

Maybe, since they delayed the release of this from BL Day, they've printed up a few extra copies? I'm guessing since this article is up that pre-order will be this weekend, for those lucky few.

I'm quite happy maintaining my stance of not buying anything from Black Library, lest my purchasing somehow be misconstrued as tolerance of their atrocious business model.
