I've alway been a fan of the Academy Awards ceremony, even considering all the contradictions and issues the festival usually has. So do you agree with the awards? Did you like the movies? I'm a huge fan of Del Toro and I'm glad he won, but The Shape Of Water is IMHO his worst movie ever, the only one of his filmography that I didn't like. Blade Runner 2049 is my favorite 2017 movie and I think it deserved to get more nominations among the most important ones. Get Out definitely the most overrated movie, along with The Post. I'm shocked about The Disaster's Artist's nomination since I consider it the worst movie of the year along with Mother!. Here's the movies that were in the competition that I've seen, and my personal vote:
The Shape Of Water: 4/10
Dunkirk: 8/10
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri: 7/10
Call Me By Your Name: 7/10
Lady Bird: 7/10
Darkest Hour: 7/10
I, Tonya: 7/10
Get Out: 6/10
The Post: 6/10
Coco: 8/10
The Square: 5/10
Loveless: 6/10
Victoria & Abdul: 6/10
The Disaster Artist: 3/10
Baby Driver: 8/10
Blade Runner 2049: 9/10
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2: 7/10
Kong Skull Island: 6/10
Star Wars The Last Jedi: 6/10
War for the Planet of the Apes: 5/10
Beauty and the Beast: 5/10
Logan: 5/10
Mudbound: 5/10
Unfortunately I missed The Phantom Thread, The Insult, The Greatest Showman and Loving Vincent. I'm planning to watch them as soon as possible What do you think about the ceremony?

Last Jedi made it in there? Cripes, that's bad. Did they forgo "taste" this year? Although I am glad to see Spidey: Homecoming didn't make the list. So I guess they weren't totally pinheaded.

No, I think he is just listing movies he remembers and giving them a numerical score.
The opening monologue was pretty good, especially the new category: shortest acceptance speech wins a jet ski.

Get Out was fun, but it was not top shelf, much less an award winner. Thats pure political. None of them could match whats on TV now: American Vandal would have kicked their ass, as would The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Dark, or Stranger Tales. 2018 is already shaping up to be a better year. Loved The Game. Reviews of Annihilation are excellent. We have Deadpool coming, and a host of good comedies.

Good show. Good calls on most of the awards. Nobody really got robbed and the deserving movies that lost generally lost to deserving movies.
The only place where that old sense that the academy is woefully out of touch for me is the refusal to acknowledge that there might be some merit in the Lego movies. Not that I think Lego Batman deserves the win by any stretch of the imagination, but it was more deserving of a nomination than Boss Baby.

Agreed. Logan was the best film I saw last year.
And then I found out what an 'Inclusion Rider' is. Holy gak...
Eh, idk. Given that art is impossible to subjectively quantify, there's no way of knowing if the 'best' person for each particular part is right until after the movie runs.
If this Inclusion Rider is widely adopted, and the actors with the clout to that insist on it being included continue to be big draws, then it's a good idea.

I've seen most of the best picture nominees, and while I thought The Shape of Water was very good, I would have picked 3 Billboards. Both Get Out and Lady Bird got critical raves that I didn't understand: I thought both were excellent movies but I wouldn't have called either a masterpiece.
I haven't seen Blade Runner 2049 yet, but I did see all of the other ones and from what I've heard Blade Runner was correct to get best cinematography & visual effects. I did greatly enjoy Skull Island though.
Glad to have seen Allison Janney and Sam Rockwell take supporting oscars. Allison Janney is a terrific actress.
Also think Logan should have won for screenplay, but eh.

Janney is a significant talent, but do spare a thought for poor Laurie Metcalf. Poor girl's been in this game for as long as Janney and seems to always be in her shadow, whether it's TV or in movies. feeder wrote:Eh, idk. Hugh Jackman should have been nominated!!!! He had two amazing movies this year. I don't even care which one he got nominated for but Logan was excellent and Greatest Showman had the best legs of any movie in 2017 and likely 2018 too. It was still selling out theatres in week 9 for gods sake.
Glad Sam Rockwell got one. He's another formerly unacknowledged treasure.
I know being entertaining isn't actually required for Oscar awards so in that sense I was actually impressed they picked a movie I'd watch more than once as the screen play (Get Out). That hasn't happened in....forever.
Pissed that the only category that Greatest Showman was nominated in didn't result in a win. "This is me" in the current climate is just so dang perfect.
Oh well, Oscars. I don't really watch them because they generally don't reflect films I enjoy.

Yeah I agree about Patton, he was the real star of my favorite movie of all times, Aliens. But it's outrageous to ignore someone that basically starred in all James Cameron's movie, including Titanic that won 11 awards.
They should have also mentioned Dorothy Malone, who even won the award for best actress in 1957 for "Written on the Wind", a great movie.

A lot of people don't like the Greatest Showman on the principle of its subject matter. I think that alone more or less knocked it and anything associated with it out of the running. "This is Me" probably made a better case for itself at the Oscars themselves than it did in the film as well. I don't think anything will beat out Robin Williams performing "Blame Canada", but that was easily one of the better in show performances for best song.

Well nothing is going to beat Robin Williams doing anything. The dude was a damn demi-god of comedy. I think for Greatest Showman people got to mixed up in the PT Barnum thing and thought for some reason it had to be a biography when in reality they never once claimed it would be. The overall message of the film is fantastic and so are the performances. That said I don't think IT should have won an oscar. Just that Hugh Jackman should have been nominated for something given his two stellar films this year that were two ends of the spectrum that he killed and that This is Us not winning is just crazy in the current environment. p.s. I'm still mad about 2013's Jackman snub for best actor...Name any other movie or tv show actor who could have pulled off Les Mis like he did it with them actually singing during the film. A damn treasure says I!

Jackman gets a lot of Broadway awards. There may be prejudiced about that. I haven't seen Logan but I don't think he's had the material to do an Oscar level performance yet. He needs something with real meat to show off his acting chops methinks.

Right, and if the production of the movie suffers, and the box office returns diminish, ol' George won't have the clout to insist on this rider, and the rider goes away.
Or it doesn't, and the usual suspects of twitter are chicken little-ing for naught.
This rider concept might as well be renamed to "Tokenism, Inc.".
This remains to be seen.

I think Logan did show his acting chops. Les Mis certainly did. That said I'm totally good with Oldman winning. The guy is amazing and totally deserves it. As long as Lewis and Denzel didn't win AGAIN I was happy on that note.
As for the rider I'm mostly good with it. I think it'll be a short term tool to break some of the strangleholds in the industry. And like Feeder says if the movies suffer for it then it'll go away.

Logan has some terrific performances, but, as much as I love it, I have to admit it had about zero chance of actually winning anything once it got into evil clone cyborg mercenaries territory.
As for Jackman himself, he's an incredibly reliable actor. He puts in 2-3 top tier performances in a row with incredible consistency, but I'm not sure any one of them has ever quite been the singular best of the year. That's sort of the issue dividing single best from concepts like favorite or career achievements. It's not about how good you are in general; its about how good you were on that one specific occasion, and in the case of the Oscars, how well that occasion lined up with the specific tastes of the academy.

While the above is true to a certain extent we all know quite a few oscars are handed out because of lifetime work. Or do you really think Decaprio in The Revenant was the best performance of the year. It wasn't, he'd just missed so many times they gave it to him. And then there are the people who get nominated for brushing their teeth (Daniel Day-Lewis). I'm glad for Oldman this year. Since he won I'm actually ok with how things fell out. Just annoying to see some actors who only make movies for the academy taking home prizes while actors producing genuinely good product over and over are left on the wayside (like Rockwell and Oldman were till this year). The only guy in that category other than Oldman that regularly puts up genuinely good movies was Denzel. At least in my opinion.

That's more or less how I feel about the whole crowd this year. There are people I'm disappointed didn't win, but they lost to people I'm glad won.
As for Best Actor, I do think Daniel Day-Lewis is deserving of the praise he gets. He's barely recognizable from one film to the next and while I think more often than not his films are overlong and reek of Oscar bait, I will say that he tends to be the one thing in the film that holds my attention. The other two nominees are pretty new overall, so its not really fair to compare the body of their work to people who have been in movies since before they were born.

You're one of the best lighting riggers I know, but George Clooney's rider says I need to hire 3 more Muslims, 2 more Chinese-Americans, and at least one Latino. Half of them also have to be women. So, yeah, you're out of luck."
That's not how productions on this kind of scale work chief. Having the absolute best possible "behind the scenes" crew vs one that's like 10% less effective because the hiring was quota-based is not going to make a fig of a difference to the box office either way. It'll make a pretty big difference to the folk not getting jobs because some overpaid actor has decided what skin colour or genitals you were born with is more important than your experience and skill though.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.
"Your society's broken, so who should we blame? Should we blame the rich, powerful people who caused it? No, lets blame the people with no power and no money and those immigrants who don't even have the vote. Yea, it must be their fething fault." - Iain M Banks

"The language of modern British politics is meant to sound benign. But words do not mean what they seem to mean. 'Reform' actually means 'cut' or 'end'. 'Flexibility' really means 'exploit'. 'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal |

Yeah, Jackman is a fantastic actor, with one of the broadest ranges out there. From Broadway to action to drama, he can pretty much do it all. Wait; was Logan action or drama? Either way, it was a helluva powerful movie. It definitely wasn't a popcorn flick the way the rest of the X-men or Marvel stuff was...but it was a STRONG "finish" for the series (and the character).

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I, too, am so glad for Rockwell and Oldman. The actress categories, glad for Francis, but was really pulling for Laurie - she is sensational and even her voice work in animation all these years has been stellar.
I did not see many of the movies, but Bladerunner was really epic.
Oh, and the Inclusion Rider? We have had it in America for decades upon decades - it's called Affirmative Action. It cracks me up to hear employers say in the same sentence we do not hire based on race, religion, sex, etc. and we are an affirmative action employer - totally a paradox.
