Hello, I am not sure if this is where to post this. It is a work in progress and honestly is just an attempt to make something war gaming related. I must mention i am both a newbie to painting/terrain pieces and i also have never played warhammer40k or any tabletop war gaming with miniatures.(don't shoot me please! )

Reasons i decided to give this a try is being amazed at stuff people make for dioramas and war gaming. I love to read and watch videos on making stuff like this. I also have access to massive amounts of plastic from my work. The plastic is various types of ABS and i like how sturdy it is for models etc. The paint i used so far is spray paint oil based/ enamels.(again don't shoot me) Anyways, ill just include some photos from its start to where it is now.

Again i do not war game at this time so i can't honestly say what it is other than maybe a terrain piece at this time. My initial idea was to be a toxic waste plant of sorts. At this time it is on the side burner unfinished. I'd love to get suggestions and criticism on things to fix. I.E. i'd love to hear of an alternative to make the edges of the base thats not foam or plaster if possible.for durability and bonding sake.

Links were blocked in my first post on a new account, so ill add them here.

Please note also its changed over time - some of the early pictures starting it

after some more painting and changes

More changes and paints

(close to) last pictures of project with added details like signs/logos etc. still havent finished base or added all details i wanted yet.

sorry for the bad phone pictures, ill have to get better shots soon. I am working on other stuff like this as well, so its all learning process!

thank you for viewing.

I am not good at crafting terrain myself, but I do wish you luck and intend to learn along with you.

I should probably be following the traditional foam and plaster like stuff. Lots of resources out there for that and guides etc.. I just have tons of plastic(scrap abs from electronic housings etc)on hand and want to find uses for it. As such this may end up being a small part of a 2x2 or 4x6 battle board if i get that far. I don't have any Mini figures to put in or near these for size reference.

Below are some additional pieces i am making and working on as i learn unpainted for now, as i am building them

walkway stones? test samples

Barricade? test samples

Dude, the scrap idea isn't bad at all. Now I kinda wanna go sifting through the various junk piles out in the woods and see what I can get. This would be great Necromunda terrain.

Good to know as i know little about factions of warhammer universe. Is it just the green toxic stuff that goes with necromunda or can it be also with the structure looks? I will try to educate myself on this!

Good to see someone might have use of this stuff!

The biggest faults of messing with this plastic is tools, and smells lol. The paints and glues and heating tools can be overwhelming in unless you got plenty ventilation. In fact i am tempted to get my hands on some regular model acrylic like paints soon. right now im going with the cheapness stuff i already have on hand.

Another concept piece for flooring/walls idea. I am just testing various ideas with the materials i have on hand. I even put a little plaster on it, but its too brittle and easily chipped in my opinion.

Also ill add some concept test sample of buildings and structures (all not finished or painted yet just concepts)

small building1 test sample

Large building test sample

not sure yet, lol

Great work! I really like what you've done with the materials you have on hand. Nice rust effects and glowy green toxic goo as well.

You mentioned plaster and breaking/chipping. Are you using plaster of paris? I know many people prefer materials like dental plaster or something similar. It's available from hobby and model train shops, or online. For gap filling in terrain I generally go with spackle (drywall patch).

For basing, a very common material is mdf or hardboard. Consider leaving a 1 inch "border" for flock, gravel, sand, etc. Also helps protect your terrain piece.

Thank you for the tips. I have only drywall spackle on hand. I thought that was plaster hah. I will look into the other materials mentioned. I was trying to do it on the cheap for now since i do not even game at this time. I have MDF board but i think its too thick for using as bases. I should maybe nab some of the thinner stuff. I do have some decent mdf board that's very sturdy for the base sections of a battle map.

I was hoping to use plastic for the base of the terrain pieces, but then this makes it harder to spackle/flock etc? I'm guessing i could still use something like modge podge or wood glue on plastic for flocking/sand etc?

busted out the dremel to rough in more plastic barriers(i have tons of these plastic pieces), they need a lot of love(more effects, sanding and the like) before even getting close to painting. weathered with battle damage

Well i might as well post failures as well as victories lol.

got overzealous with dark colors.... among many mistakes i don't have flat clear coat yet only gloss.
good thing these are just test samples to learn on!

changed it some, still not sure about this

Yes, it's a little glossy. Maybe the building both exploded and melted?

Testors Dullcote is what you want. It's the flattest flat. You'll love it. If you have a Michael's near you, get it there with a 40-50% off coupon.

All of these pieces are excellent terrain! With the ABS plastic electronics housings- they already look halfway to space-age/warhammerish/etc and with your superior rust weathering skills are terrific as-is. You're leaving space to be able to maneuver figures into/under/through, so they're perfect for gaming.

The shot up walls are great as well. Frankly, I think you've got the one item that anyone needs for scratchbuilding, citbashing or customizing terrain ( ) and that is an active imagination.

Keep 'em coming!

Excellent! thank you for the tips and coupons, i do have Michaels nearby. I've been digging through the galleries and you guys do some pretty cool stuff! Gives me ideas but since i am just starting i got to take it one step at a time!

Speaking of steps lol no pun intended, I found some a neat little way to make some steps/stairs. One of my biggest challenges was thinking i would have to scratch build stairs with plastic. Sorry my skills aren't that good yet, and i was worried how bad they would look. Haha, i know most people use foam and the like which is so much easier to work with. I have many plastic panels with vents. I was cutting one up when i realized it makes great stairs! So i made a quick mock up to show what i mean. Assuming anyone else wants to do this if they examine vents on plastic housings/panels of most electronics it may work for them as well(scrap stuff though :-) ). My panels happened to be inclined at an angle which worked perfectly.

again this was just a quick mock up to show, i didnt actually mount these to anything yet.

panel i have

Stairs i can now make

thank you for the comments and looking at my mess! Its really weird how i keep looking at this scrap plastic and see things in my head. When i show my other half she just sees a piece of plastic garbage i need to throw away! Haha, anyways i literally have a workshop room and garage full of this stuff. Bins and bins of plastic panels. I got many good ideas and not enough time to throw it all together. On the good side of it all. Since i do not play yet, i am having a good friend of mine over tomorrow night who is bringing some of his old 40k stuff. So i am going to have some mini's to paint and play with. They will also help me make better pictures and size up the terrain better.

I am hugely excited to do the art like aspect of this hobby! While doing this it will probably drag me into the game.

The stairs are brilliant- my neighbors need to be careful, or they might wake up t find various and sundry plastic bits missing from all their electronics!

I'm in the sport mostly for the painting and creating too- don't have much time to get out and game, although I would like to.

And I have the same type of spousal unit- if I'm not careful, she'll have all my 'treasures' in the dust bin and I'll have to start over collecting all my neat stuff again!

Can't wait to see what's next!
