Just a quick update - I've started building the Despoiler. I'll post a WIP photo once it's built, but in the meantime, here's the loadout I'm building:

Avenger gatling cannon and heavy flamer
Thermal cannon
Heavy stubber
Ironstorm missile pod

I'm also going to be using the half-skull faceplate as I think it suits a Chaos Knight the best.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a colour scheme for my Despoiler? I could just replicate the scheme I used on my War Dog warlord with the yellow pauldron, but I'm starting to think something a bit different (but complementary) might be more interesting.

A halved or even quartered pattern always looks great with contrasting colours...and the model is large enough to do that without it looking busy.

My two cents,

What palette are you using overall for the army? Red/silver/yellow?

Halved/quartered schemes look very cool, and reinforce the knightly heraldry theme. I’d worry a little about looking too much like a Howling Griffon, but there is only so much heraldry you can do with those colors without that.

Another thing to do for centerpiece models is to invert the scheme. So if you normally do red with a splash of yellow, do him mostly in yellow with a splash of red.

Or add black/white areas so you don’t mess with your color scheme, but need him to stand out more by adjusting the contrast.

Well here it is primed:

Still a long way to go, but at least it can join the rest of my army on the tabletop now

The pauldron, shield and opposite knee will all be predominantly yellow. The skull side of the face plate will be white, with a black forehead on the other side.

I've not posted for a while - mainly because I've had other things on, including playing a lot of games.

Anyway, just to say that I made some more progress today - blocking in the yellow panels, as well as painting the sliver part of the carapace and the red gun shields.

Plenty more to go...

Looking sharp!

That tilting shield needs something. Decal/transfer?

I think you're right. I might have to get a Chaos transfer sheet.

I picked up a Knight Desecrator and a Terminator Squad from Games Island to pass the time during lockdown. Significantly the Desecrator comes with a Chaos Knights transfer sheet with enough transfers to do the rest of my army too

Very nice looking. Especially the white helmets; a notoriously hard color to pull off.

The one thing that stands out is the two heavy weapons. I don’t think we’ve been allowed to field them that way since 4th? edition. Yup. Just checked the archives, the change to requiring a full 10 man squad for double heavies came in 5th. Now I know part of your theme for the Ultras is only using old school units, and they fit gloriously into that. But not in 8th. Just going to have to paint up 5 more guys and make 2 squads.

Thanks. The helmets were done with Ulthuan Grey, then recess shaded with Drakenhof Nightshade.

And well spotted on the loadout. Yes I know that. It'll be one or the other in-game. I just couldn't resist building both. Similarly, I'll be fielding them all with chainfists (except the sergeant), but GW only put two in the box In that regard this is my only non-WYSIWYG unit (across both my armies) which grates a bit, but hey, they look cool

So after a bit of re-photographing and a reorganisation of my Dakka and Flickr galleries, I've gone and broken all the image links in this blog

You can still see all of my miniatures in the link in my sig though, and there are separate albums for those that previously featured here:

Ultramanrines
Chaos Knights

Probably time to start a new P&M blog now though...
