What question at this point could you possibly see that is answered by the core rulebook?

The basics. Army construction seems to be particularly elusive. I'm convinced that most 40k players have never read the rules and simply play by osmosis.

Reading this thread I get the feeling that many of the Dakkanauts that constantly complain about 8th edition and the new fluff haven't actually read anything of it, just the complaints of other guys on the internet who also didn't read the book...

Yep, bought Dark Imperium.

Practically haven't touched it, not sure why.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

I was eager to get the BRB when it came out. I am thinking about cutting out the parts I need for games and doing the same to the chapter approved and just putting those pages in a binder. I would have preferred a rule book with all then needed parts to play as a small extra book over the large BRB we got. But that's just me.

I used to have the BRB. Until one day it disappeared after I set it down at a FLGS and never showed up again. My rather uniquely book-marked BRB. The store had rumors about a particular player having sticky fingers but... Who knows.

After that, and moving away from the location shortly after, I haven't bothered to buy it again. I know the rules needed. The only thing I use from it are missions and deployment maps. If my opponent doesnt have a BRB either, we just play Dawn of War and Purge the Alien. Good ol' slap fight game.

Ugh... that's part of the reason why I refuse to go out and play with anyone else besides my small group. I'm missing out on meeting a lot of good people, but I've read enough stories about stolen models that I'd rather just play in the basement with people I know and trust. Glad it was just a rulebook and not any of the models you spent your blood sweat and tears on.

I bought Dark Imperium last year to introduce myself to the game and get in on the fun. Can someone explain to a noob what makes CA missions better than the BRB ones?

Praying to get a game of 9th edition in before Summer.

More variety in win conditions and deployment, better incentives to play the mission instead of going for tabling and so forth. Progressive turn by turn scoring in many of them is the biggest difference.

Also, narrative side has the better missions all day erryday. Sieges <3

Got it in Dark Imperium, and haven't brought it to a game night in ages. Even though I always have to look up the detachments in someone else's BRB.

I didn't know what to vote. I have more than one full sized one, one of which was from Dark Imperium.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Nope, I've moved on to Kingdom Death - a game that looks to be dramatically cheaper than 40k in the long run.

ETA - if I still played 40k, I suppose I'd get it.

I respect the size of your signature but I hope we don't forget Kingdom Death full Kickstarter was.... well I honestly don't remember/know but it was a pretty comedic amount to have the "full set"

Eh, either yes will do - perhaps go with the one you got first?

I'm mostly concerned with the Yes/No portion. Splitting the Yes gives me some idea of whose "starting" armies vs. whose bringing Xenos or older armies.

I do not. I have it on PDF and never use that either. I've assembled cheat sheets of the rulebooks main points, and my group plays predominantly narrative based match play games - where we create our own scenarios. As such the rulebook provides very little use. I would, however, purchase a hard copy of just the rules portion for say $25.00

I think we have maybe....two main rulebooks between ten people in my group. It's simply not necessary after reading it a few times over.

PS: The increasing FAQ/Errata/CA changes also make it less and less worthwhile, much like codices. I do own a hard-copy Codex and cards for each of my two main armies though.

Yeah, I bought one mostly as a talisman to play pick-up games as a store where I didn't know what the protocol was. It never really gets used as most of the lore can be found in one way or another online and the actual rules portion isn't that much of the book and fairly easy learn if you already knew the basics of miniatures wargaming. I like all the various mission scenarios contained within it (I think it is a good source for ideas to create custom missions), but not at the price point I had to pay for the book.

I think I would have been fine with battle primer especially how rarely I play actual 40k anyways.

Since I wrote my original bit, I did manage to sell my extra rulebook (just had to drop the price a little). I find myself still regretting having that full-blown copy I bought separately. However, I'll likely keep it for posterity - I have the rulebooks all the way back to 2E (my RT copy fell apart on me, so it's gone).

I am glad that I got a (free) battle primer on release day, and between it, the 40K intro magazine and the rules primer from the various sets (Forgebane, can't remember what boxed set the second copy I have came from) - and the PDF version, I'm glad to see that GW is making the rules available in so many ways - but the BRB seems like such a waste.

It never ends well

Nope. Our club got sent about 200 copies of the battle primer pamphlet and we give them out to every new player who comes in, still haven't gone through half of them by my reckoning.

The only thing that isn't in the primer and is in the BRB is the terrain section and the detachments. And all of them are out of date by FAQs/Beta Rules at this point.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

That's a really good point, very little point in buying the BRB itself has all of it is out of date now anyway. Does anyone still play missions from that book? My area is all CA 17/18

Only reason I have the book is because of Dark Imperium, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered.

"Courage and Honour. I hear you murmur these words in the mist, in their wake I hear your hearts beat harder with false conviction seeking to convince yourselves that a brave death has meaning.
There is no courage to be found here my nephews, no honour to be had. Your souls will join the trillion others in the mist shrieking uselessly to eternity, weeping for the empire you could not save.

To the unfaithful, I bring holy plagues ripe with enlightenment. To the devout, I bring the blessing of immortality through the kiss of sacred rot.
And to you, new-born sons of Gulliman, to you flesh crafted puppets of a failing Imperium I bring the holiest gift of all.... Silence."

Six months later and I'm now using the following:

BRB
CA 2018
Open War cards
Codex SM
Codex SM Datacards

I'm more invested in the hobby now so need the matched play rules. Once it became apparent that you only need the latest CA I was persuaded. The cards were recommended by people at my local gaming group.

I'm still using BattleScribe for list building though.
