I'm sorry but but I just don't think I can accept this version of the Doctor. It might not sound particularly progressive but that is just a shocking accent.

#keepnorthernpeopleinpeterkayecomedies

More seriously, when is this actually airing? And is there Christmas special in the pipeline?

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. Fingers crossed as surely it can't get worse as really felt Mr C got horribly short changed last series, and hopefully the new sidekicks will less be twee (although Nardole was kind of fun essentially being the Metal dog)

I really liked Bill, especially after the shocking Clara. Personally I was never an Amy fanboy either. The last regular companion before Bill I actually liked was Donna, and I say that despite disliking Catherine Tate in general.

Therefore I'm expecting Bradley Walsh to go down as my favouritest companion ever.

Hopefully it'll be a well written delight and not like how Clara ended up.

Change of showrunner as well folks.

RTD just deus ex’d It with the Sonic.

SM just deus ex’d it with get-out clauses.

How about we see the Doctor do what the Doctor does best? Out think the foe.

And yes. Please, no more Clara’s. Actually genuinely worse than Mel and Adric put together.

I liked Clara. I didn't like every storyline, but I've never liked every episode of Dr Who. This series has always had a high noise to signal ratio.

I'm interested in seeing what they do with the new Doctor.

Can they PLEASE get rid of the sonic-screwdriver!
I kind of felt that WAY TOO MANY of the new Who's seem to rely almost exclusively upon the screwdriver to do almost everything. It sort of gets to a point where you're left wondering not how they'll solve the problem, but when the screwdriver appears.

That’s RTD’s fault.

Whilst I’ll always be thankful for such a wildly successful resurrection of the show, he wasn’t half a lazy writer.

Me? I mostly want to see Ace get an actual ending. For those not familiar with Old Who, Ace was pretty much the prototype for every new female assistant. No ‘thcweam and thcweam and thcweam until I’m thick’ nonsense. Oh no.

Ace was the one that set about more than one Dalek with ( grantedly empowered) Baseball Bat. She was the one that got actual character development.

But her end wasn’t an end. Her last scene was her and The Doctor literally walking into the sunset. And with that, the show was cancelled.

Her relationship to The Doctor was something special. Avuncular. The last three stories of Old Who are referred to the Ace Trilogy, as The Doctor helped her face her daemons.

That she’s been paid the very merest (as in might as well not have bothered) lip service in The Sarah Jane Adventures (they’re great, btw) is not enough. She needs an end to her tale.

Daleks, war-hungry aliens that cause fear and terror across the universe and scaring children since 1963. They are The Doctor’s greatest nemesis, providing some of the best stories in the classic and modern eras. However, it looks like the Daleks are not returning for the 11th season of Doctor Who.

The new showrunner Chris Chibnall confirmed this news when speaking to the Radio Times in the UK. Chibnall is quoted telling the Radio Times “We’ve got lots of new villains, lots of new monsters, lots of new characters for you to fall in love with.” Chibnall also states “It’s a great moment to bring everybody on board. It’s a big, inclusive, accessible mainstream series of 10 really, varied, exciting standalone stories. So you won’t see very much from the past.”

When speaking at San Diego Comic-Con Chibnall said “We’ve got two weeks left of shooting, and we haven’t seen them [Daleks] yet.”

This could all be a bluff from Chibnall with the aim to surprises audiences with a big return for blobs in battle armor, but it is unlikely. During the modern era the Daleks have been overused to the point that any sense of menace from them has disappeared – a break of a season or two so that the show could build up a massive return for them and be a huge threat once again. They could have a storyline that does them justice.

Doctor Who is set to return in October this year.

Nice.

They do need a rest. Their stories hurtled downhill with the rubbish ‘human dalek’. Though the Capaldi scenes with Davros were pretty awesome.

I agree. I love the Daleks and spent much of the late 1960s hiding behind the sofa when they came on screen. But they have been such a key element of so many stories in the last few years that they need a break to let them return badder than ever.

The Ood and the Weeping Angels were good introductions. I hope for some other cool new monsters.

As Moffat pointed out, you can only use given monsters so many times before they lose all effect, simply because they’re defeated so often.

I think it’s a shame they didn’t follow up the New Dalek Paradigm thing. They full on tricked The Doctor, arguably won that one, then....nowt.

I know the redesigned look met a mixed at best reception, but that’s such a small thing easily fixed.

Perhaps we’ll see hints at a wider arc, of genetically pure Daleks slowly gathering their strength. Perhaps show Davros finally fixing his hubris, and tweaking them so they recognise him as their creator, rather than simply a bossy non-Dalek they need to keep around in case of spares.

Spin it out over a season or three. Just little bits here and there, tease a crescendo. Really build it up under The Doctor’s nose,

And please - more Gallifrey. Moffat for my money pulled a blinder with fixing RTD’s biggest mistake.

Now big stuff like that can absolutely wait a season, let us get familiar with the latest incarnation first and their foibles.

Finally? No more Sonic or Deus Ex. They were fun for a bit, but the show can be so much more. I’ve got particularly high hopes for a more packed TARDIS. Having a single companion is usually more of a risk, because if they don’t quite work, you’re stuck with them. With second or third members, you can vary the character growth, and present The Doctor with more than a single morality to bounce off.

Although it was done a bit haphazardly I sort of liked those episode as the Daleks are stupid even by the standards of kids TV baddies and the smartest of them flat out murdering one of their own for suggesting not being so fupping stupid might be the way forward was either meta genius or terrible

It was the accents and the ridiculous pig men that did it for me.

As ever with Who, I can forgive ropey costumes because ‘what’s a budget?’.

But gods. Those accents. And the Human Dalek’s voice. *shudders*

You know what, I could do with a return to Peladon. No idea what they’d do there story wise. But the two originals are pretty groovy stories. And of course, I really crave a return to the old show’s format. When you’ve a couple of hours to tell the story, you can do so much more than with just 45 minutes.

Leave Clara gone as well. But bring back Bill. Bill is fantastic, character and actress both.

I liked Daleks in New York. I liked the period detail and the gag about the Doctor liking musical theatre, and so on. It's going back a bit to the original roots when there was supposed to be more historical content.

But everyone doesn't have to like every episode.

The Weeping Angels had an amazing introduction, and plummeted off a cliff every other time they showed up after that.

The curse of a good monster. People love them so you want to bring them back, but their 'shtick' is a bit narrow, so you try and find new things to do, but it's not what made them popular....

Dunno. Cyber men have largely held up well. But then, I’d argue they’re more relevant than ever as our own technology progresses and feeds into wider SciFi.

I mean, the whole cutting out of emotion because it hurts? That’s really rather dark for what’s ultimately a kids show.

Focus less on saving the Universe, more on saving a planet or system. And do more stories about greed being the real evil.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

See, that's always seemed like more "the curse of writers who over-value novelty" to me, because most of the time if you just bring back the popular thing doing the thing that made it popular, the people who liked it before will continue to like it.

You can over-expose something, sure, but it's the writer types who insist on only bringing things back if they change them, when most of their viewers would quite happily enjoy the "basic" version of the monster for a long, long time before they felt any need for novel reinterpretations of the concept.

They need to be seen to learn from their defeats though.

I really like how The Doctor has become a Bogeyman to some cultures and species. Throws up an interesting, of yet poorly explored, narrative.

Depends on the monster, how many defeats, and with Doctor Who specifically when those defeats happen. Something like the Daleks or the Cybermen, yeah sure after a few storylines they need to switch it up in some way or they become ineffectual and even comically inept, but they started messing with the Weeping Angels right after their first appearance didn't they? And it also makes no sense in the context of Who for enemies to learn from defeats that will happen in their relative future.

I really like how The Doctor has become a Bogeyman to some cultures and species. Throws up an interesting, of yet poorly explored, narrative.

100% agree on this though. Problem is I think they have to be careful going into territory that's too "interesting" in the first season with the female Doctor, because in that context there are a lot of issues the show could explore previously with little controversy which could now be read with a big layer of subtext that could rile up the outrage merchants, on both "sides". Tackle this issue with a female Doctor and you create something "problematic", tackle that issue and you've generated "feminist propaganda". I'm really hoping her first season is just straightforward adventuring with occasional dips into spooky & weird, establish a baseline that could unequivocally only be read as political by the most rabid numpties, and then they can tackle some heavier material in the second season.

Hmm they seemed to increasingly make him a all powerful divinity which got quite sickening and put me off.

I'd settle for a more fun, exploratory show with odd things happening in the timeline and other worlds without having so many totally annoying characters like River Song.

Personally I like the returning enemies to be used sparingly. Are there any absolute classic, 10/10, universally acclaimed episodes (in either the old or new Who) that heavily feature well-used classic monsters?

The only one that comes to mind immediately is Genesis of the Daleks, which took a clever new look at how Daleks could fit into a morality tale. Tomb of the Cybermen maybe? . Dalek Invasion of Earth has an epic scope but the Daleks were still relatively new at that point. Earthshock is well known as a Cyberman story but is it mainly because of Adric's demise?. There are some Dalek & Cyberman stories from the first two Doctors' runs that are fondly remembered but large parts (or all) of them are missing and may not really hold up if they are found.

Conversely some of the absolute best episodes are unique foes who get to act in ways that the audience doesn't expect and pose the Doctor new problems. Talons of Weng Chiang. Inferno. Robots of Death. City of Death. The Empty Child/Doctor Dances. Pyramids of Mars.

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. ...and Destiny and Resurrection being pants and Revelation being '...errr, ok, I guess'.

The problem with super-powerful universe-spanning bad guys is that we rarely see them flexing the power that makes them the ultimate antagonists they purport to be. All we see is the Doctor defeating them. Using the 'Doctor-lite' episode as a set up for the bad guys to follow could work in that regard...

I feel the Vashta Nerada came across well, especially since they actually took the Doctor's offer, which is rare. When they've showed up since, in games and such, they tend to only be used for their repetitive scare creatures without any further development.
