I always find it hard to tell with him when he is serious or when he is just being silly.

Can you provide pictures of the whole cactus. If you can find someone ere who can identify it properly (and that certainly wont be me) maybe you can get specific advice.

So I'm pretty sure the cactus KT is growing is peyote.

It gets so dark so quickly here now anyway it’s hard to get the time to capture a photo in the daylight. But yeah, this is how it’s looking at present. Not too good it seems.

The rest of it seems healthy though. That white pot does not look free draining, and it does look a bit cramped. Get compost specifically for cacti and repot. The new pot must allow water out the bottom rather than trapping it. It’s no where near dead yet.

From what I can see the rest of the plant doesn't look particularly unhealthy, although the smallest one on the extreme right in the second picture doesn't look too clever, I'd be inclined to remove that one as a preventative measure. Without knowing the specifics of the species off hand, it looks very overcrowded in there to me and at the risk of sounding like a stuck record I'd really be inclined to re-pot them and preferably separate the individuals out so that they've got more space, whilst cacti grow quite slowly in cooler climates like the UK the sooner you can do it the better since the bigger the plants get and the more intertwined the root systems get, the more difficult it will become to separate one or the other and you may have to accept sacrificing one or more to save the others.

I'm assuming here that these are probably individual plants that have been potted and grown closely together and were bought like that since garden centers and supermarkets will often sell them like that for aesthetic reasons and because they take up less shelf space regardless of the long term health of the plant, although I believe it's possible that it's a single plant so proceed with caution. Either way though, any diseased sections need to be got rid of as soon as you notice them to try and prevent any rot or disease spreading further.

Agreed with the above comment about the white pot though, unless it's got a hole in the bottom to allow excess water to freely drain away get the cactus out of there, it will not be doing it any favours.

What the others have re-iterated - It actually looks in pretty good shape compared to the photos you posted originally.

@Simonr, in regards to crowding this has the look of a cactus that is one plant sending up semi-independent shoots on the side. Each of those can be split off and potted to be their own plant but I suspect they are natural clones rather than multiple plants potted together.

You might even be lucky; cut the grotty bits off that separate piece, bung it in another pot and it might start growing again. I had a cactus that fell off the windowsill and spilled all the soil out the pot, and a bit broke off. I re-potted both bits and ended up with two healthy-looking plants that lasted years more.
