Afternoon all,

I've been picking up the latest edition of White Dwarf since it returned to its true form. Unfortunately, these take up space.

I'm considering dissecting older issues, so I can keep articles I value - Paint Splatter, new rules, etc - and ditch the elements that I really don't need.

Anyone got any experience in the best way to go about such an endeavour?

Confirmation of why no-one should listen to Kanluwen when it comes to the IG - he doesn't want the IG, he want's Kan's New Model Army...

If you do i'd go for box files over ring binders,

despite them being slightly easier to flip through you'll always rip the ring holes and end up with the contents in a mess, box files are solid, stackable and at least the contents stay in decent condition

If it's cutting advice you want, there's a distinct line about 7mm from the spine where the glue stops. Take a metal ruler and a sharp box cutter/fresh hobby knife, and cut straight down from there, or perhaps slightly further to guarantee that pages aren't stuck together (there's a reasonable amount of space before the content on each page begins, so it's up to you. Do the cover only at first, and then 2-3 pages at a time from there.

As for storage solutions after that, box files are better at preserving them but slightly harder to peruse, so if it's pure convenience you want, the ring binder and hole punch approach is best, otherwise the box file is your friend. If you want to take it a step further, create an index on the inside cover to make navigation easier.

Thanks for that, y'all.

Aye, Tim, I was thinking the cutting side of things primarily - I hadn't really thought about storage of the salvaged articles, if I'm honest, outside of maybe in document wallets within a binder (rather than punching holes in them directly).

Go digital? Scan the pages you want.

I scan the pages I want to keep then recycle the magazines after a few years.

It depends how much of it you actually want to save. Are we talking about a handful of pages or hundreds?

I'd to ring binder with poly pockets, that way the pages are protected, but it might get a bit more expensive and tedious if you're adding half of each magazine.

Scanning the pages is an option, I guess - though I think I'd want to separate them from the magazine to scan - but I don't have a scanner at present.

@Herzlos - In terms of what I want to keep, it'd be any new rules content, Paint Splatter and the Painting Masterclass articles (like the recent one on freehanding symbols) for certain, and any others as I see fit. For the current Orky issue, for example, that's pretty much just Paint Splatter, I think.

I'd just go ring binder + pockets then, if you're only talking about a couple of pages an issue.

I've considered slipping them into cardboard magazine holders as i whole-heartedly agree that while there is nothing like the colour, the feel, even the smell of printed matter it is incredibly heavy after a matter of time.

I have returned to collected White Dwarf recently as well; during my term as a GW retail staff member i enjoyed having the opportunity to grab a free issue as soon as it came in but my bookshelves soon became bowed-out and over-laden with Codexes in addition to the ever-increasing number of White Dwarf publications

I even have a smattering of when they decided to go weekly with the White Dwarf, and while they are great to flip through those are ultimately the most useless ...

Scan each magazine into its own pdf, mark the pages in the index with what kind of thing is contained within.

Then join all the individual pdfs to a single pdf frontpage, which will allow you to Ctrl+F the entire collection for relevant keywords.

It's going to take quite a bit of work, depending on how big your backlog is.

Then just make sure to auto-update a copy of it onto a cloud drive somewhere (e.g.- Microsoft Onedrive has this ability) so that you don't lose it when your computer dies, or if you lose access to the cloud drive.
