Title mostly says it. DoA unit to me. Has a big Ld debuff aura in am edition where Ld rarely comes into play. Only buffs Black Legion Raptors, which are a low tier at best unit with one of the worst army traits in the game. His Super-Spooky-Spear can't be used in close combat, at all. It's an assault 1 grav pistol basically, and who the heck takes those? But he might get an extra attack if he somehow kills a character! Too bad that'll never happen. Though points aren't shown, I'm betting 180. Because chaos.

I'll be happy to be proven wrong once his rules come out and CA2018 somehow fixes the hot mess that is Codex: Cultists + IW Daemon Prince.

It's nice you bothered to read at least the topic of the article, instead of the text itself, as...

...What’s more, this ability applies to all Raptors, not just those of the Black Legion...

... was quite clearly said in there, so taking some extra debuffs to go along those Night Lords isn't that farfetched.

Ok, I'll admit I missed that sentence. So he buffs everyone's mediocre unit, not just the 2nd worst ones. Still doesn't fix the rest of him.

People in our thread on it are also saying he's 120 points and may retain the normal Chaos Lord buff in addition to the raptor buff.

He seems lackluster but could be a hidden gem if you bring him with a big group of Raptors.

I mean, Haarken is disappointing in general.

He is extraordinarily awful looking as a model. His face/head in particular is truly awful.

That said, there's a deficiency of cool spears in the 41st Millennium, so I was kind of hoping his would have a neat profile.

That said, since he's got 80 days to claim Vigilus, and is pretty much otherwise unheardof; he probably exists to sound threatening but fail miserably so that Abaddon can arrive and really start the fight.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

He's trash, don't wrack your brain too much about it, he's a trash character that buffs trash units.

Trash.

He is at best a moderately interesting painting project.

I really like the model, but unfortunately he's only good for proxying a better built generic raptor lord with a maul or chainsword. Although I imagine he'd make a kickass World Eater in a red scheme.

He's not particularly great in combat. And buffs a unit that is supposed to be designed to be a combat unit but sucks horribly at it.

Also, the model just kinda looks like a conversion. He looks like a Raptor with a bunch of gak glued onto it.

Read it a gain Sarg. It buffs all raptors.

And now, I like him a lot.

I'll run him, and have a great time doing so. So, no, we're not all in agreement.

But yeah, they could have made him at least mildly good by making him the following:

WS 2+ BS 2+ Toughness 5 Strength 8 6 wounds with a 4++ and a 6+++ built in, 2+ Armor with LD 10 with 6 attacks at AP-3 D6 DMG ( Wounds of a 6+ generate 2d3 mortal wounds) all for 135 points.

That's two new chaos lord models and still no Abby. Really don't get GW's strategy with this.

I've been liking spawn more of late. This guy plus an MVB gets me to a -3, which makes Treason a plausible spell. I think i'll make Calgar punch his friends and call it a day.

There's plenty of LD shenanigans that people could try if they were willing to give it a shot and if points come down there will be less reason to ignore it.

Bottom line is he is a Black Legion HQ who makes Night Lords better.

Take him with a detachment of Night Lords Raptors lead by a jump pack Sorcerer and you have a deep striking unit that eats light infantry.

You would never want to take him with Black Legion Raptors, they are just too vanilla.

Yes, you could do this, but why? As pointed out earlier, you can do it cheaper, better, and more flexibly with a generic Chaos Lord.

This character is trash, we can discuss the various ways to jam the square peg into the round hole, but the bottom line is, you're jamming a square peg into a round hole.

Something about his proportions and posing feels off to me. He seems very squat and static for a model that's supposed to be flying through the air hurling a spear.

While it's a piss-ugly model, he seems completely fine to me. Decent stat line, decent weapons, 12" jump which is great for anyone putting out auras. Also, while morale isn't a huge factor in 40K...it becomes one when you start dropping negative modifiers in there. His stats are superior to a normal Chaos Lord w/ jump pack so I'm not seeing much point for all the hate.

I'm not entirely sure what people were expecting from a hyped up Chaos Lord/Champion style character.

You...don't even know his cost and yet you figure you can do it cheaper and better with a generic lord? closest comparison is a jumpack lord with two claws and a plas pistol (as he HAS the extra attack of having two claws built into him.) its 112 points and not even a legal setup, and as he is rumored to be mere 120 points, its pretty comparable.
Also. he has a few unique abilities (18" Ld debuff is actually quite major for a PROPER ld debuff strategy, that means you spread moral hits around rather than try to superstack it on one squad like a fool), and buffing raptors in CC may not be the end-all-be-all thing, but if you are going for raptors-it helps.
People really underestimate his ability to gain more attacks. he doesn't need to kill a freaking jetbike mustard for it, a mere support char that many armies got plenty of will do-and they are easy pickings. (some can be one-shotted by the spear)

I'd say, even at 120 he's playable.
Not meta-defining, not auto-pick, not even amazing. but defiantly playable.

Tl;DR compared to a jumpack lord with 2 claws he pays 15 points for the spear, the raptor aura and the ability to gain more attacks-I'd say its a pretty good deal if you are having raptors around.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

Generic lord doesn't easily get you to a -3 LD and doesn't give full rerolls to hit in combat. This guy also has an extra attack and a small chance to get more.

The thing is, we don't actually know everything about him yet. We don't know what his Lightening Claw does, and we don't know if the Spear has a melee profile.

All we know is that he's really cheap, and there's always potential that Raptors change in Chapter Approved. Let's wait and see what happens.

That's incorrect.

He allows units to reroll all hits in melee. That's better than a generic Chaos Lord. Unless you are taking Raptors for shooting, which would be foolish, he's better on that front.

The reason you do this is so you can also take Abaddon in the backfield for rerolls on all shooting. Now you have a deep strike threat for a Chaos Gunline.

This. I'd find it rather odd if the spear didn't come with a melee profile as well.

Biggest issue for me was the lack of rules that followed the fluff. They mentioned how he plants the spear into a world (reminded me of Necromongers from Riddick) to spread fear, and his name is worldclaimer. Well, then he should have been given the ability to plant his damn spear into the ground that either buffed the army, or debuffed the enemy. I know he has a small Ld debuff from his own person, but I would have liked to have seen more. He should have had a separate spear on a base that is placed on the table and all buffs/debuffs measured from that.

He's an afterthought character that no one asked for and linking him to a Legion was a mistake IMO. He should have had <LEGION> so anyone could use him.

Not horrendous but Raptors are relegated to Plasma delivery so melee rerolls isn't ideal.

I think it’s more a case of, if I may speak for a good chunk of CSM players, him not being what we wanted.

Charge me the points and give me a close combat monster. We have enough budget mediocre close combat characters to provide buff auras.

Not the end of the world. Hopefully Angron will arrive sooner or later with a satisfying World Eaters codex.

Eh, Raptors may deliver plasma or melta...but once they do they're better off trying to charge than sit and be shot/counter-charged. So that's a -1 Leadership if they get close...the extra penalty from this guy will stack enough to where Leadership actually matters.

His lightning claw isn't anything special, as it is simply listed as "lightning claw" under his profile. His spear will likely have a similar statline to its thrown version.

So he's a cool, ugly, option to run if you like Raptors or jump-Lords. No big deal. Worst case scenario he'll be used to make a gak ton of kit-bashes.
