Dead Man’s Shoes
A Shane Meadows slice of slightly skewed reality.
Paddy Considine stars, but as tends to happen in a Meadows film? Everyone shines. Because it’s all kept low key and realistic. Not real, see above comment about “slightly skewed”.
I think this was released in 2004. But it stands as a very, very British lowkey revenge prawn flick,
You could port the central conceit to the early 80’s and replace Considine with Arnie. It would be the same tale, but told entirely differently.
Here, Considine’s aggrieved elder brother out to avenge his young brother is almost Yautja like in his military trained ability to slip in and out, whilst doing damage. And we get the pleasure of pretty low level gangsters realising they’re screwed. It’s the pleasure of watching any school bully meet The Real World. And the fact there are indeed powers greater than them.
I bloody love this film.

Watched F1 over the weekend. It's not particularly special but the performances are really solid and there's some excellent racing sequences that just make for a satisfying film. Doesn't feel like a must see but a cool, rather classic feeling movie overall.

As I understand it the film really, really needs to be seen on a nice big screen to really get the effect the film was going for in the race sequences, like a full IMAX or Dobly Digital. Shaking seats helps as well.

This Is Spinal Tap
“Two word review: sh*t sandwich.”
I believe Spinal Tap was the first of Christopher Guest’s series of slow burn mockumentaries, and the only one directed by Rob Reiner. It suffers from being copied and surpassed by later efforts, and for having all its best jokes quoted and repeated endlessly in pop culture. It was entertaining if not laugh-out-loud funny. A surprisingly memorable performance by Fran Drescher stood out to me.
The VVitch
“Did ye make some unholy bond with that goat?”
The VVitch is a very A24 horror film depicting the (slowly) building dread that destroys families when they raise creepy twins. If you thought Evil Dead wasn’t uncomfortable enough and Blair Witch Project was too fast-paced, this is the cabin in the woods movie for you. If you ever wanted to see a family of Puritans be puritanical a-holes to be each other, this is the movie for you. If you found Barbarian lacking in the nude, murderous hag department, this is the movie for you. If you want to see Goody Proctor learn to live deliciously, check out the VVitch.
If you want an exciting witch movie with a great score, watch Suspiria.

I just watched the greatest film of all time:
Troopers! I have just received new orders.
Our superiors say the war is cancelled, and we can all go home.
Bison is getting paid off for his crimes, and our friends will have died here... will have died for nothing.
But... we can all go home.
Meanwhile, ideas like peace, freedom and justice - they get packed up.
But... we can all go home.
Well... I'm not going home.
I'm gonna get on my boat, and I'm going up-river, and I'm going to kick that son-of-a-bitch Bison's ass so HARD... that the next Bison wanna-be is gonna feel it.
Now who wants to go home... and who wants to go with ME!

I'm left guessing its a Street Fighter movie?

But, yes, I purposely left out the title. It's more fun this way.

Ah ah ah. I think you’ll find the multi-untalented Minogue’s first movie was 1989’s The Delinquents, among the first to receive a then new 12 Rating from the BBFC.
Yeah. She was dreadful in that too.

Leave Kylie alone!
I often think way too much about Raul Julia's great line about Tuesday. In fact, Raul Julia's own state makes the line echo even deeper in my psyche.
It causes me existential reflection, as we will all face a crisis, and indeed our own end of life moment. To us, of course, it is a threshold beyond which we can not see. However, to the vast majority of humanity it will indeed just be a Tuesday. It reflects one of the core existential crisis of the human condition.
Truly a work of art causes one to question themselves and the world around them. By that metric, Street Fighter or at least one scene from it; was indeed elevated to Art with a capital A.
That's my Hot Take on Street Figher anyway.

I get to be rude about Kylie, because the superior Dannii once kissed me.
On the cheek.
After she ponced a ciggie off me. Backstage. At the Big Breakfast Eggs on Legs 2 tour. At Holyrood. In Edinburgh. Where I was backstage being put into a costume as an Alan Wicker, because I’d been picked out the crowd to be a Wickerman for the Chicken in a Basket game.
But I’ve still come closer to properly copping off with a Minogue, superior at that, than the vast majority of humanity ever will.

Between terminal illness, drugs, local coups, drugs, language barriers, dysentery and a lot of drugs, that the movie even got finished is a miracle. It was definitely hugely disappointing at the time, but there's no question that the passion put into it has made for something far more entertaining to watch now than the vast majority of bad movies of the day.

Legally Blonde The Musical

Not something I thought I would ever see but Kyoto Secunda Prime has been learning a song from it for her chorus and well...
It is really, really good.
Like much better than I thought it would be, I've never seen the movie and know nothing about the Legally Blonde cinematic universe, and I laughed my butt off.
Is he gay or European? You would not think that could get a 5 minute musical number.

Laguna Ave
*intense glower* “May I use your rest-room?”
Laguna Ave is a near-0 budget independent film, a slightly surreal sci fi dark comedy, about a former musician loser with a prosthetic hand being drawn into his neighbor’s paranoid(?) delusions(?). The tone is somewhere between Clerks, Punch-Drunk Love and Eraserhead, with a dash of The Matrix. The first five minutes will either grab your attention or turn you off completely.
It’s hard to evaluate a film like this because it has a lot of Independent Movie excesses and a dollop of Art House WTF, but just when it starts to lose me it brings me back with a moment of pure cinema, such as the double-Molly Enema scene. All the performances are “local actor wants to stand out” caliber. The music is weird and fun. The action is punchy and the effects charming as reasonably possible given the lowness of the budget.
I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to throw on a “WTF did I watch” movie with friends.

The Bluff. Karl Urban/Priyanka Chopra very late era pirate movie made for streaming. Very entertaining, moody, and with believable action sequences for our protagonist. Mostly she survives because they're attempting to take her alive, and Mary has no such restraints. Action sequences are direct and abrupt. There's also a very large focus on interesting firearms from the era- you don't see many pirates with revolvers, or harmonica guns. Plot is there, what you'd expect for an action movie. Enough character history is alluded to to make it feel personal, and both our leads get that splendidly ornate dialogue to use.
Sadly, there was a lack of ships, but what are you going to do. They're incredibly expensive. Still well worth the watch, if for no other reason to encourage the studios to make more pirate films!

Naziploitation flick, once banned in the UK as a video nasty. And that status is the sole reason I’m watching it.
See, I grew up during Mary “what’s an off-switch?” Whitehouse rein of preachy terror. And I’ve always been intrigued by what all the fuss is about. Especially now we live in a more permissive age in terms of what is and isn’t allowed on screen.
Sometimes, the Video Nasties are genuinely good gory fun. Other times, they’re artless drivel which if not for the hysteria of the era, most likely would’ve sunk without trace. And despite being very much a fan of cheap thrills and mindless titillation? If such a film is just dross, I’ll say so. And recommend against watching for that reason.
This however, is actually crap. Whilst a sensitive and provocative subject matter, there’s just nothing to see here.

Got around to Predator: Badlands yesterday and its both good and not as good as it could be.
First off, its maybe the most video game feeling movie I've seen, substantially more than most video game movies. There's a tutorial before showcasing the open world with title card. There's regular encounters that introduce new mechanics that are ultimately used in big boss encounters.
That said, it does all those things well, but I'm not sure I've seen a movie in recent years where I felt so aware of how much better it would be if constrained by the limitations of practical effects. There's so much empty CGI and just... the leg fight.... that I tuned out through and kind of wished the whole thing was just animated instead of being the Lion King definition of Live Action.
Still, I like the characters, I like the story and there's several points that were just cool. Good, not quite great and I think I'd rather have played it as a videogame, but definitely a cool take on the franchise.
