Looks feminine to me; GW really knocked it out of the park on the facial structure, which is usually a weakness in my view. Whoever made this model needs a promotion.

It says that her box is "Black Library themed" and that her first full-length novel is "also" available.

It's far from clear, but to me it seems like no, you don't also have to buy the book.

Super model.

Now, female troopers, from the same sculptor please...

I’m sure if you green stuffed a beard on there it would pass for a bloke commissar. Instant Colonel-Commissar Gaunt as one poster already mentioned. He was always described as slight of build.

The only thing to my eyes that say this is female is the proportions of the sculpt, and that is merely on the basis of comparison to the historically designed, stockier, ham fingered older Cadian etc. If they redesign the Cadian range I expect the proportions to be improved, as they have been on al recent releases, in which case this model will not jar as significantly as its does against existing legacy designs.

Absent them saying this was X, a female Commissar, there’s nothing screaming female. If this is the design style that people clamouring for female sculpts are after then to my mid they have that already in every sculpt released to date and merely need to pop a different head on. Female Cadian, swap the head, on the existing androgynous sculpt. Female Space Marine, again, swap the head or go full helmet - who knows what’s underneath.

Skitarii are equally as delicate sculpt wise. On the basis of this mini design cue presenting as female (ie slight build compared to old scale proportions), every Skitarii is female.

Putting a female head on a Cadian body doesn't get you anything even remotely similar to the proportions of this miniature.

Exactly - the old Cadian are in the old proportions - the point I poorly tried to make is that the Cadian body is androgynous. This body is androgynous. I imagine if the Cadians are re-done in this current proportion style then they will also look equally androgynous in which case all this call for female sculpts that aren’t boob plate, high heels and booty boils down to put a different head on an existing model. A Cadian with a flak helmet wont be distinguishable as either sex.

Like, I didn’t twig there was a female in the void troopers in the Rogue Trader game as the models are just androgynous body types. Same with the cultists in Blackstone Fortress, at first glance before someone said there was a female, none read as explicitly female.

To be honest, if you wanted to play this as a 16-year old male commissar thrown onto the front lines, that would still be suitably grim dark.

Lovely model, will definitely be getting. I have the previous Eisenhorn, which is also a great sculpt (and casting quality was fine, slight distortion on the staff, but easily fixed with hot water and not unexpected for long, thin, resin.)

I hope there is visible pinned up hair somewhere on the back of her head, similar to what the book cover shows. Otherwise this would probably look too androgenous for my taste (and not because of the missing heels/boob plate - Greyfax is an abomination).

Face and overall proportions look fantastic. Resin is a big bummer though.

Raine's physique is very, very, very different from just slapping a female head onto a Cadian body

Very different.

Dunno. I like the miniature. If anything, for a purely "realistic" take (which I'd not want in 40K), she's arguably still too female (partly due to near-skintight uniform).

I'd doubt anyone would notice much difference between male and female soldiers modeled realistically with a helmet on and scaled down to a miniature scale.

Spoiler:

That's just a side effect of Commissars being stylish It is like the difference between pre/early war Wehrmacht soldiers and later war soldiers in WWII. Initially stylish close fitting gear, later more practical, loose fitting gear.

Female Cadian, swap the head, on the existing androgynous sculpt.

Well... Yeah, lol. That's pretty much how people make female IG right now, and 3rd party companies do a healthy trade in selling female noggins for that purpose for that reason. IRL that would be pretty much the only obvious difference in a uniform like that, so you can get away with it. Differentiating a little more like the traitor guard figures' body sculpts is even better, but head options would be perfectly passable.

(although it's worth mentioning that often if you do pop a female head on a Cadian, people do convince themselves you've trimmed the hands and hips, there's a kind of optical illusion to it)

For figures like a Commissar though, it is a little different, it's comparable to a dress/No 1 uniform, and there is a distinct difference to the eye.

It's a very well done sculpt all around.

Yes, human miniatures with more human proportions in battle gear could pass for male or female if they aren't ultra muscular. As you said, the blackstone fortress cultists could pass for females if you change the heads.
I don't need my male miniatures with marked crotchs to know they are male, I don't need all my female miniatures to have boob plate and high heels (And I like my SoB with boobplate before anyone says anything) to know they are female. At the end of the day it depends. The aesthetic of the faction comes before anything. I wouldn't expect Witch Elves to be covered in armour without marking their... feminine virtues. Just like I don't expect Orks to wear perfectly nice and clean tau-like uniforms.

Also I agree that this is probably the best face I have seen GW sculpt recently, but maybe part of it is the paint.

I believe it is more important to note that this is a major move to create a strong human female lead in the GW mythos/cosmology, who is not a Sister/nun archetype, etc.

Bravo, GW.

No, but it's nice to have one that isn't all sexed-up. I'd love to see a Lotara Sarin miniature by the sculptor, but the tricky part would be the evidence that Angron felt a boob.

To be honest Greyfax is a little sexed-up, but thats fine because Inquisitors are the most baroque part of the Imperium and thats what makes them amazing.

I was focusing more on the face, but yeah, the hips don't have to be that narrow, I agree.

I like the smaller proportions on her hands and legs though.

Funny how we only ever have this level of analysis about proportions on models when they’re female (getting flashbacks to the ‘Celestine is fat’ debate).

Now we need for some 4chan poster to drawn how she would look under her armour to shown how badly it is done!
And yeah, the max you see with male models is "Those FW's Blood Angel Terminators have horrible proportions and strange legs" but people don't start cropping and editing, or talking about the merits of having terminators with funny legs, etc...

Not a miniature with their own book series, where they are the lead/primary character. Who isn't super-powered.

Now, do I expect this series to pass the Bechdel test? Nope. But, baby steps.

I see, however, there's another example! I'd like to see more of the Minka Lesk novel series as well, which is ALSO new.

This is, quite clearly, part of an evolving GW strategy, along with their new YA fiction.

It's a good thing, especially if they release female Guard miniatures, which supporting the Minka series might push them to do.

I guess if they're working from the artwork though..

Shrug.

On the other hand - Female Commissar + New Guard Model = Yay.
Female Guardsmen next, please.

Well, I saw the pic first without knowing what it was or having seen the novel's cover, and my first thought was "Oh, a female commissar, neat! Still the hat's a tad too big, though", so it certainly was female enough for me. YMMV.

A female model without boopplate? What grim dystopian future is this?! Good thing we already know the Sisters of Battle still stick to the standard pectus maximus mars pattern for their servoarmor. How else would you be able to tell the diffrence of genders which is very crutial to a battle in the 41st millenium!
