Yeah, that is a huge bummer.

So since it's apparently something some people would like to talk about.

The host of the new Twilight Zone movies went to a collage campus to speak in front of students and answer questions.

Apparently parts of it are being picked out and called racist as a tag line for articles to generate clicks. The article is titled "Jordan Peele says he'll never cast white lead in one of his films."

https://twentytwowords.com/jordan-peele-says-hell-never-cast-white-lead-one-films/?utm_content=buffere5926&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=22&fbclid=IwAR0QP-PKt_IBSAQlBl00EzFqf3CtgzbnDYD4YoCNlY8awL8XZ0QAuMWvJyo

The actual quote is.

One other type of power is much more important to him.

“The way I look at it,” he explained, “I get to cast black people in my movies. I feel fortunate to be in this position where I can say to Universal, ‘I want to make a twenty million horror movie with a black family.’ And they say yes.”

And he's not going to "mess" with the formula that proved to be so successful.

“I don’t see myself casting a white dude as the lead in my movie. Not that I don’t like white dudes,” he said, nodding over to Roberts. “But I’ve seen that movie.”

The moment he said that line, the audience broke out into "loud applause and shouts of agreement," The Hollywood Reporter says.

Peele added, “It really is one of the best, greatest pieces of this story, feeling like we are in this time — a renaissance has happened and proved the myths about representation in the industry are false.”

Which doesn't say what the article is titled.

I am excited to find some other way to watch it. The cast seems great. Peele has proved himself as a producer director and writer and if he doing more then hosting I am looking forward to some good short stories. I just won't pay for a streaming service just to watch it.

A black dude thats married to and has a kid with a white woman is called a racist... what a time to be alive.

Pretty excited for this show, though.

Its crazy how Jordan Peele has cemented himself as a master of horror in so short of a time. Dudes a genius.

I guess. Honestly I thought Us was a let-down. The plot made no sense and had a predictable twist.

I am curious to see how he handles the short story format.

Rod Serling didn't just host but wrote a lot of the most iconic original episodes and has generally been revered as a grand master of the short story format on film.

The revivals without him never managed to live up to the original. Peele has big shoes to fill.

I guess I should slow my roll, as brevity didn’t really convey what I meant.

Peele is at a point where he has a Midas Touch, sort of like M. Knights early work. Seeing him go from Key and Peele skits, the majority of which were vulgar (but still mostly very clever and intelligent) to a director that can command the kind of clout that he currently has is very impressive to me.

I’ve always liked short story horror / quirky stories. I hope it comes to Netflix, but if not I guess I’ll need to find another way.

Jordan Peele is half white himself, his biological mother who raised him as a single parent is white.

So, even more facepalm really.

Anyway, I haven't yet caught these, but am excited to watch them. I'm a big fan of anthology series like these and liked the original Twilight Zone quite a bit. Broken glasses episode, it's a good life - man, I loved those.

I'm not sure that I would say I am a huge Jordan Peele fan though. I thought Get Out was pretty solid, but just saw Us and didn't think it was amazing, or bad... just OK. So that midas touch thing is a little overblown in my mind, or at least premature. Key And Peele was very, very hit and miss as well to me. I agree that his sudden ascent is something to see, though.

I'm excited for the series, but not CBS All Access excited. I'll wait for Netflix or even the DVDs should they be priced to move.

Same. I think this may be a growing problem in the future.

Just apply the simple test. If you invert the races or genders in question, would it get you unpersoned, internet dogpiled and/or literally attacked in the street by the SJW outrage mob? If yes, then it's still racist/sexist.

Imagine if he had said
“I don’t see myself casting a black chick as the lead in my movie. Not that I don’t like black chicks,” he said, nodding over to Roberts. “But I’ve seen that movie.”
there would be international outrage.

Thats a rather stupid test if you want my opinion. It basically completely ignores the cultural, political and scoial context in which the comment was passed. It's tentamount to quote mining. The test should be, does the quote promotes or defends the superiority of a group over another or a system which does so. If yes, then the comment is probably sexist/racist/homophobic/etc. If no, then it's not. At least, that's how I sniff them out.

I think most people are reasonable enough to read his actual quote, understand the context, and then draw their own conclusions.

And then not watch Twilight Zone because CBS All Access.

Are you seriously arguing that racism is ok as long as it's towards the correct targets?

Is it racism or a reaction against institutionalize do racism? Without getting into politics, I feel like a person's feelings towards affirmative action and the like will inform their feelings towards his statement.

I read the aticle on his casting black leads only.

If you reversed the races on that and a white guy said he would not change from casting white leads, the screams of "RACISM!!!" would be causing structural damage to buildings across america.

I'm calling what he said racist because if a white guy did it he;d sure as hell be called racist. I'd pass on the show even if it wasn't behind yet another f'ing paywall.

Sorry, you don't get to use phrases like that while literally in the act of trying to drum up some garbage outrage over your own social views - I don't care if it's disingenuousness or obliviousness. You're the people you're trying to sneer at.

I don't think you did. Because you started a thread that didn't include, in any capacity, what he actually said. You just posted the out of context and misquoted tag line and decided to boycott.

There is a significant difference between someone saying "I have seen that movie 100 times. I want to make and see different movies." and someone saying "I will NEVER cast X race because feth those guys."

I'm simply treating both races equally. If a white guy said what peele said he'd be branded a racist. Period.

If a white guy said "I don't see myself casting a white dude as a lead in one of my movies. I have seen that movie." He would not be branded a racist.

If a white dude said "I don't see myself casting a black dude as a lead in one of my movies. I have seen that movie." it would come with all the baggage of decades of white washing in the industry, the historical lack of opportunity, and a determination to keep things how they were.

They are not the same thing. And what your doing is being willfully oblivious to history for the sake of a dumb argument that fails to incorporate reality into the mix.

This test is overly simple and ignores the effects of historic and ongoing inequality in modern racial relations. The only way to "fairly" switch the races and genders in the original statement is to suppose a world where white men have faced lack of opportunity for generations, were often cast as sidekicks or comic relief, and told that movies for them could never succeed. There's just too much context that this test ignores for it to be relevant here. It's about as flawed as the Bechdel Test.

How anyone with a straight face can say "I don’t see myself casting a white dude as the lead in my movie" is significantly different from "I'll never cast a white dude as a lead" is frankly mind boggling

I'm not saying hes a racist but he sure as heck made a racist statement.

How you don't get it is beyond me. Are you really oblivious to the last 70 years?

You can't see the difference between a definitive statement and a hypothetical musing about the future?

Only if you take that sentence in a vacuum. He said things before and after that sentence that place it in context. Yes, race is being addressed, but not how you are framing it. It's like what happened with Brie Larson, but over a less inflammatory statement. It smacks of people calling Black Panther racist because there were no white Wakandans; it's an obvious attempt by culture war partisans to find anything they can get some mileage out of.
