Mel Bose – The Terrain Tutor – has been building terrain for almost as long as he can remember. When he was five, Mel built playsets for his little green army men in the corner of the craft store his mother ran. He was often assisted by model railroaders who were regulars at the store and, by the time he saw his first White Dwarf magazine at age 15, Mel was primed for a life of building terrain.

Mel has traveled the world, as a medic in the army, a physiotherapist, and even a salesman. He has worked with people from all walks of life, and looked at things from many different perspectives. It is this approach that he brings to his successful YouTube channel (The Terrain Tutor, click the image below to check it out). For the last fiveyears, Mel has been able to make a living from sharing his passion – teaching people everything he knows about building terrain for tabletop wargaming, for hobbyists, clubs, displays, and for dioramas – and it’s that passion and knowledge that he is bringing to this book, TERRAIN ESSENTIALS.

This Kickstarter campaign is to fund a printed version of the book – TERRAIN ESSENTIALS – a 96+ page book perfect to add to the collection of anyone with an interest in creating excellent tabletop terrain, regardless of purpose or the builder's ability.

The Content of TERRAIN ESSENTIALS

Mel has spent many years researching all manner of tools, materials and techniques, as well as experimenting and documenting his process. He’ll be putting it down on paper for the first time, and TERRAIN ESSENTIALS will include:

• Theory – From inspiration and research to planning and set design, from colour theory and build types to workflow and longterm project management, this section will help you plan the best terrain for you before you even start building.

• Materials & Tools – Covering all the most commonly used materials, from basic craft and DIY to specialist modeling materials – including how and where to use them in terrain making – along with an in-depth guide to the essential simple, professional, and custom tools specific to making terrain, this section is all about making sure you have the right tool and right material for the job!

• Core Techniques – From cutting bases to sealing your finished terrain and a whole host of techniques in-between, this section will ensure you have a solid understanding of the core skills and techniques used across the spectrum of terrain building. Covering the essentials, from basics like cutting and gluing, to advanced washes, sealing techniques and combating warping, this section will not only give you the information and confidence to use these techniques but also troubleshoot them.

• Base, Texture, and Paint – Good terrain starts with a good foundation and this section provides in-depth coverage of basing, laying down the ground, realistic texturing techniques, and a range of earth tone painting guides. From cheap and easy basing materials to perfect pigments, you will have the information you need to make sure all of your projects start with a solid, realistic foundation.

• Grasses and Trees – This section is all about the greenery, from laying down beautiful and durable grasslands and pastures, to tufts, flowers, shrubs, bushes and hedgerows. As well as tackling the small stuff, this section will go into creating a range of trees; everything from armatures, to bark textures, painting and finally creating awesome looking foliage for your trees.

• Hills and Rocks – As the most common feature on gaming tables, this section covers those rocks, slopes, hills, and cliffs. We look at everything from a number of different construction techniques to maximising playability without sacrificing realism, realistic painting guides, and more advanced techniques for modular and large feature hills and cliffs.

• Buildings and Ruins – Buildings and ruins can be mini-projects in their own right, so this section breaks it all down and takes you step-by-step through building, painting and fine detailing for buildings from our history, or a dystopian, gothic, far-flung future. Covering multiple techniques for everything from the foundations to the roofs, this section will have you making the best buildings for your urban combat.

• Water and Snow – Often seen as the more challenging aspects of terrain making, this section will demystify water and snow pieces, giving you a range of techniques, core colour theory, and guides to the most common pieces like ponds, modular rivers, and snowy terrain.

• Terrain Kits – As kits, prints, and casts become more prevalent in tabletop gaming, this section not only equips you with the key knowledge to make putting your kit together problem free. But it’s not only about building kits; we will also take you through customising and tying your kits to your existing terrain collection, giving you what you need to turn each kit into a unique terrain piece.

• Mel’s Top Tips – Throughout the previous sections, Mel will be giving his top tips, tricks and fixes, making sure you learn from his mistakes so your builds go as smoothly as possible.

We are planning to cover each of these chapters in as much detail as possible, to give you as much information as we can. We have a number of stretch goals planned that will help us provide more in-depth knowledge on each of the techniques used and sample builds shown in the book.

Why create a book?

It has been quite a while since there was a great “Introduction to Terrain Building” type of book on the market, so after five years of helping the community build their terrain on Youtube, it seemed right for Mel to be the one to do it. On The Terrain Tutor YouTube channel, Mel presents a lot of great ideas, techniques, materials, and tools in a handy, episodic fashion, but we know that not everyone learns in the same way. The written word (particularly when accompanied by great photographs) can help many terrain builders connect with the material covered in Mel’s videos. Helping others enjoy their hobby is one of the key drivers behind The Terrain Tutor, and Mel finds there’s certainly a lot of job satisfaction when helping others be happy is your living.

Mel is partnering with Dave Taylor, of Dave Taylor Miniatures, to bring this book to life. Dave has been involved in tabletop miniatures wargaming for almost 30 years, has worked in "the business" for 25 years, and has known Mel for a decade. Dave recently delivered his own book aimed at helping wargamers complete more of their wargaming projects more often – Armies & Legions & Hordes – which he successfully funded here on Kickstarter last year. Dave is running this campaign, and will be coordinating the layout, editing, publishing, and distribution of TERRAIN ESSENTIALS.

Of course, this campaign is also a bit of an experiment. If things go well, we may look into a series of more detailed books for a future campaigns.

Stretch Goals

Add-Ons

To keep things very simple here during the campaign we'll be focused on funding and growing the content for the book, so we don't have any add-ons planned yet. No doubt, however, we'll be adding the physical book and PDF (and a few other items) to the pledge manager coming a little bit later.

Shipping

Shipping costs will be collected in the pledge manager, after the campaign. For a single copy of the book, we expect them to be US - $15, UK/EU - $15, Rest Of World - $30. For each additional copy of the book please expect to add US - $10, UK/EU - $10, Rest Of World - $20.

Delivery

To ensure we cover all eventualities, including delays caused by potential shipping issues, we are scheduling the delivery of this book for February 2020.

Why Kickstarter?

A well-run Kickstarter campaign gives us the best chance to make a great splash, cover all our costs, and serve up a very memorable product that you’ll be using for years to come.

Risks and challenges

Mel has been building terrain for decades now and has reams of information on what tools can be used to apply certain techniques to a wide array of materials. Although he has never written a book before, Mel certainly knows what he’s talking about and is well underway with the writing and new terrain builds!

Dave has been writing about, photographing, and laying out magazine articles about wargaming miniatures for over 20 years and has (almost) never missed a deadline, so we are confident that he’ll have no problems in completing the layout for TERRAIN ESSENTIALS.

TERRAIN ESSENTIALS will be printed in Lithuania, and now that Dave has had his own project printed there (ARMIES & LEGIONS & HORDES) he is MUCH more aware of the potential for production and shipping delays, where they may occur, and how to create a more robust timeline to avoid those delays.

BREXIT – We have no idea how Brexit (if it happens) will impact various changes/charges/timelines with moving products from the EU to the UK. Rest assured, however, that we are committed to the pricing you are seeing in this campaign, and will cover any additional fees that might be imposed on us by the time we are able to deliver your cool terrain book.

Mel's YouTube videos and tutorials are enormously valuable to anyone who aspires to make terrain, from the beginner to the seasoned veteran. I really can't recommend his channel enough.

If the book has even half the value to me as his other work, it will be money well spent.

And though this will be more or less important to some, he seems like a guy who really cares about what he does.

I've got my eye on this. The shipping is a bit steep, but a big terrain making book is always worth it's weight.

Mel's solid people. He deserves success in his project. Absolute Gentleman and a Scholar.

His You Tube channel should be required watching for gamers and modelers alike.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

I've had a poke through some of his youtube vids and i've bookmarked him for later viewing. Solid stuff for sure.

I'll almost certainly back his KS now. Just have to allocate some funds.

It bugs me that Canada always gets grouped into Other Countries. I'd spring for this, but once again the shipping to Canada should be comparable to the cost in the US. But it's closer to the cost of the book.

If they can bring that down I might consider it. Other than my single gripe, this looks awesome.

I may have gone for the book had the pdf been thrown in with it. $80 with postage for a book (and pdf) is past my limit.
Especially as it will attract a 25% customs charge (which includes tax on the postage) and the postage company admin fee mean the total will likely be £85 or higher.
Way too pricey for a single book.

I'm tempted to pull the trigger and get it, I really like his videos and he's pretty genuine but 35 quid for what would be a coffee table book is a bit hard for me.

I'm going to push this right back up because there's only 2 days left (48 hours and counting) before the KS is over

It's currently at around $205,000 and the book will reach 176 pages if they hit $210K. If they make it to $230K (which based on its current standing, pace and that many pledges appear in the last days could be possible) then there's a paper quality upgrade as well as a selection of table photos in PDF form.

There's also some extras including a 20 page PDF on basing and a laminated colour card swatchsheet thing.

Weeee, almost forgot to back this. Got in with 14 hours left.

Really glad to see that the project has gone so well. It has clearly exceeded their expectations by a great margin.

So it looks like a congrats to Mel (and Dave) on a project well funded and lets roll on the delivery date!

Last few hours! Only 3 to go!

They've hit every target and are now just rolling more pages into the terrain display PDF. There's also going to be two ribbon book marks in the printed book!

Also note the book can be added via the pledge manager later so if you can only afford the PDF or the like you can go that pathway and add the book later. There's also several other addon options too.

These books started shipping the other week.

I got my book in the post today! Very excited to finally have it in hand. Anyone else have theirs yet?

I was a bit disappointed and somewhat unimpressed upon opening it though. The book was loose in the cardboard packaging, no bubblewrap or even cardboard/foam bracers to stop it banging around.
So now I have some corners bent and abraded and I think the pages have separated slightly from the spine as well.

The book itself however, is gorgeous and definitely worth the money!
Now just have to work my way through the mammoth 190 pages!

Mine's arrived too - blows the socks of almost any of the other terrain books I've seen over the years. This is very firmly going on the "all wargamers should own" pile of things!

Still waiting on my copy to arrive here in the US. Saw in the comments that a few other people also got theirs with no extra packaging and banged up corners, which is a huge shame. Improperly packaged books is one of my top pet peeves. I imagine even a single wrap of bubble wrap would have helped a lot.

I know my physical copy has shipped but still waiting for it to arrive. I got the PDF as well, and looking through it I'm definitely impressed. Great reference to have at the work table. The basing guide was a bit underwhelming, but still a useful reference I think. Combined with his Youtube videos,it's close to a one stop shop for terrain making.

Agreed. I had a PDF copy pledge, and I'm very happy with the content.

It's a treasure trove of knowledge for terrain.
