Hard disagree. Western medieval knights and roman centurions/legionnaires are babys first History Channel crush, followed by Landsknechts. I'm far from a casual and only really came to love the winged hussars recently, most casuals (aside from perhaps Poles and eastern europeans) in the west probably don't realize that winged hussars existed as they aren't something often featured or discussed (at least as far as the US is concerned).
Have to agree with this, from an American point of view, that part of polish history isn’t really taught in schools here. And, I can’t recall any popular movies about the winged hussars that came out here.
So… knights, romans, musketeers, pirates… even samurai… sure… but winged hussars I probably only came to like (yes like, like) in maybe 2015?

It is useful, we know that broadly speaking most historicals don't make the cut and most fantasy and SF options do.

Agreed.
Not that I don’t like the setting of ww2, but it’s been done a lot. You don’t see as many ww1
I just need some good Skirmish rulesets for all these periods in time and historical. As I can’t really invest in several armies for all these different systems.

No the just lined up everything they had against the troops in the trench. Automatically Appended Next Post: Anyway my point being, small little actions with whatever story you want make a better game. I’m sure we could all find a story to wrap around a game.
Tank crew isolated after it was destroyed, small section of the trench zoomed in to play out, probably look through any history book to find some cool small squad based ideas.

I think trench warfare was one of the smaller parts of the war going by numbers of troops involved.
It just went on a long while and is a more unique part so more memorable.

As cliche as scifi samurai may be, someone please point me to a quality plastic kit of them.
...I'll wait. Closest we've seen is probably the Malifaux ones, and that kits a bit all over the place.
Hell, a modern samurai kit would be cool too. Ideally if the parts could be generic enough they could function as regular samurai too.
My take on the Hussars- I can remember my dad reading a book to us as kids about the battle of Vienna and their massive charge. It's stuck with me to this day.
My dad read us all kinds of books like that too. Good times.
Last heat had me voting for samurai naturally, along with birdmen and beastmen.

Don't most people get into winged hussars 'cos the Ravenwing banners were at least somewhat based on then?
Anyway, I definitely read *one* claim that the winged bits were useful for war 'cos they supposedly made a lot of noise to scare enemy horses. Not very convincing -- battles would surely always be noisy, and warhorses trained to cope -- but interesting. Supposedly the leopardskin saddle throws served a similar function, scaring enemy horses because predator smell...

well, the wings were mostly decoration and to make them bigger and more impressive
same as the leopardskin or that their horses were painted
yet we are still missing a lot of details as the "pictures" we have show them during parades and not in combat
one thing we know for sure is that the wings were mounted on the rider and not on the horse
for the sound of wings, not supposed to scare enemy horses but the enemy infantry, as 3000 winges during a charge would make a recognizable sound and the infantry know what is going to happen without seeing it

would the sounds of 3000 wings be audible over the sounds of shouting, gun/cannon fire, the sounds of the horses galloping, steel clashing with steel, or any of the other sounds of a battlefield?

You need to remember that each of those feathers on each of those wings was actually a kazoo.
Many a shell-shocked soldier still wakes up screaming with that sound in their ears.

by looking at what the charge distance of cavalry is, the rate of fire of guns and how far bacḱ cannon usually were, yes the infantry charged would hear it

I remember reading the same thing but that may just have been GW rules rather than rigorously researched history and tactics.
It is possible of course that the Polish used the wings because they thought they would make a terrifying noise when charging (I bet it sounded great to the lancers themselves) but never really conducted detailed exit interviews with the unit that got charged to confirm they could hear it

Sorry guys, how could I resist?
Besides, I know you love it.
In all seriousness though I'd have thought it'd be the spectacle of it. 3000 winged heavy cavalrymen descending on you evoking the image of a host of angels and righteous fury. Armour shining in the sun, gold or polished brass glinting, the pounding of 3000 sets of hooves is going to be all the noise you need. It'd be like rolling and unending thunder. Also remember that these guys were the premier heavy cavalry of their day, if you're being charged by them you're basically up the creek anyway.
I mean, if you have a solid pike block(the thing best able to resist their charge) you're pretty static and easy for them to avoid. They're not going to be charging into the front of you.

I think part of what enabled them to be as successful as they were were the differences in warfare and doctrine between eastern europe and western europe. Two very different environments with drastically different warfighting styles. The west tended towards more static infantry based combat where pike-blocks and firearms reined supreme, whereas the wide open plains of eastern europe favored a more mobile and fluid style of fighting that allowed cavalry in general to dominate out of strategic and operational necessity. Infantry and pikes played a role, but their employment and role was not as prominent as it was in Germany, France, the UK, etc.
