Deathloop has been the standout for me so far, everything Arkane have put out thus far has been brilliant and while there's no gameplay in the reveal, I imagine it'll borrow a lot of its DNA from Prey and Dishonored and thus be super slick and very creative. Combine that design pedigree with a neat aesthetic and premise and I think they're onto another winner.

Also very much on board with Avengers: A-day, aside from Spidey on the PS4 there's been a dearth of decent Marvel games in recent years.

I think what's surprised me the most is how many things are slated for Q1/2 2020. I really thought the next 18 months would be pretty barren as all the publishers geared up for the PS5 and Project Scarlett, so I'm glad that it looks like this generation is going to get a fairly generous last hurrah before the next one rolls in.

Look up "Contra: Rogue Corps". It might not be the style you're thinking of. Closer to a top down (well, top down at an angle) style shooter than a side scroller.

I'm guessing that the Marvel game is the new Avengers game from Crystal Dynamics. The presentation for it during the Square-Enix event was posted on YouTube. I'm still in wait and see mode on it.

Well, aside from the length of the barren time, you seem pretty on point. The rest of 2019 isn't exactly full of titles. I know Doom Eternal has people all sorts of excited, but mostly I think 2019 is mostly going to remembered for DLC and the absolute, steaming wreckage of games that came and failed. A few bright spots here and there (three kingdoms, maybe... mechwarrior 5, if its still 2019? Not sure what else it out there for this year, to be honest).

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

I have enjoyed quite a bit of E3 this year. Nintendo had a ton of great things. Cyberpunk 2077 is of course looking great. But this game has me so excited!

Also, even though I really never played Heroes of Might and Magic as a kid. This looks pretty damned great!

Yeah, no. Don't confuse Cloud in the actual game of Final Fantasy VII with what Square Enix turned him into in all the spin-off materials. Cloud has acquired a reputation for being whiny and angsty but most of that actually comes from Advent Children. His angst in the first game is really not all that much, until he is lead to believe he is just a clone with implanted memories, at which point he is removed from the party until Tifa brings him back to himself, which also means he no longer has any doubts and internal conflicts to hold back his determination to stop Sephiroth.

Please cite examples of actual whining from the characters, from the game.

Nintendo had a very healthy E-3 and nice to see the return of Commander Keen...

...which is all Switch only, still no Metroid Prime 4 and Keen is a mobile game. Sigh.

Dark Crystal has been having some increasing popularity; there's at least two recent connected comic series and also whilst (far as I'm aware) the sequel film has never been made, there IS a Netflix series coming this August

I am not confusing gak. Cloud has been a whiner who does nothing of his own will since the game came out.

Tiffa pines after the boy who ignores her.

Cloud does what everyone else tells him to do, then gets rolled around in wheel chair by the girl who pines after him then decides to go stop meteor because everyone else tells him it's a good idea.

Red XIII mopes about being a genetic experiment or some gak.

Barret, instead of moping, has the single emotion of anger at everyone and everything all the time. A step up, but not a big one.

Cid, still awesome. Wants to go to space.

Yuffie just wants to belong. The poster child for dependency issues.

The vampire dude (forget his name) is every person who ever played Vampire the Masquerades character. Quiet and brooding cause thats cool or something?

Aris. Clouds girlfriend in a fridge. Or would be if at any point the game actually gave cloud any motivations that were not told to him by other characters.

Sephiroth, did nothing but almost summon meteor. Every other action done by "sephiroth" were actually his clones.

etc...

By comparison.

FF6

Celes, genetically engineered cybernetically enhanced mage knight. Total bad ass, betrays her kingdom because they are fethed.

Cyan, total bad ass samurai dude who has his family killed by Kefka when he commits an actual war crime and goes on a bad ass revenge quest.

Sabin and Edgar, both 2 dimensional on the surface when edgars a womanizer whatever and sabin is a meat head until you get into the back stories of them being twins, why they split and went their separate ways and how they got to where they are.

Shadow the increidble bad ass ninja with a dog who is odin that is running from his past and keeping himself away from his daughter realm.

Terra, the awesome half esper bad ass who is brain washed witha slave crown and has to find her place in the world, eventually taking in all the lost children in the world of ruin and fighting to keep them safe from kefkas madness.

Gau, the awesome wild child of the veldt.

Setzer, the gambling womanizing airship pirate who is actually burying his pain with his bravado for his lost love and other airship piratess.

Locke, the bad ass indiana jones guy who is helping with the underground resistance while trying to save the love of his life whos stuck in a crystal or some gak.

Kefka, the only FF bad guy whos any good at his job. Actually wins. Becomes a god. Destroys the world and rules over it. Wants absolute power and gets it manipulating everyone every step of the way.

Every single character in FF6 (which is WAY MORE characters then are in 7) have vastly more depth and vastly less whine then the characters in 7 with the exceptions of Mog, whos just a mog, Umaro, who is a Sasquatch, and Gogo, who is a mystery.

With the exception of those last 3 any character in ff6 could be the main character of ff6. FF7 is full of such charisma vacuums that follow each other around instead of making decisions for themselves that your stuck with the charisma vacuumest character cloud to be the main character because how could any of the others possibly take the leading role in a story? Cloud wins out by default because hes such a nothing character that every other follower can just dump their desires on him and he has no other choice but to move forward dragging them with.

Celes - whines about not knowing what to do... then whines about things done...

Cyan - Whines about family being killed. Then always goes on about family being killed.

Sabin & Edgar - Actually like sabin. He's a bad ass. Edgar whines about having to rule a kingdom.

Shadow - Doesn't say anything. Has no depth as has no real story. Might as well be a summon.

Terra - Whines about not remembering nothing and being a lil bich and then is a scared lil bich about everything.

gau - Yeah... What's his story again ?

Setzler - 1 dimensional - look at me I'm a womanizer sky pirate. The plot twist about his broken heart surprised you did it?

Locke - Whiney goody two shoes.

kefka - Crazy murder clown that's just crazy...

The other main villain is a weird purple octopus that can talk.... yeah...

FF7 - Cloud - Doesn't give a gak about anything to start with then starts to care, a bad ass ex solidier. Ends up with a background story and is all messed up because he's actualy a clone/experiment.

Barrat - He's always angry all of the time. Family also killed and vows revenge. Except he has to fight his long lost best friend who blames him for his entire village being burned to the death . Then he calmes down a bit. Also beats his chest like a mad man.

Tiffa - Yeah she's whiny AF and kicks and punches people which is lame....

RedXII - Is actually a little kid trying to find his place in the world... Is whiny because of his dad. Then mans up, then his grandad dies. So hes whiny about that.

Vincent - is on a quest for revenge vs sephiroph and is actualy a vampire that can transform into leatherface and later the devil.

Cait Sith - Is some sort of remote controlled stuffed animal.. Whines about having no friends...No rela depth might as well be a summon.

Yuffie - Look she just wants to borrow your Materia. leave her be...

Aries - Whines about the planet suffering. Who cares..

Cid - Lobs a spear at things punches his GF across the room and just wants to go to space.

Sephiroph - He just wants to get his birthright as the ruler of the planet. Nothing to see here.

I think you are missing the point that the over arching villain is Shinra. They are responsible for killing bunch of people, and their greed leads to the meteor malarchay and keeping jenova alive...
Also they have "The TURKS" working for them. need I say more?

Overall I think the FF7 characters have more depth despite inferior quantity...

Celes, the one who actually decides it's time to end Kefka and starts traveling around the world of Ruin getting the team back together?

Cyan - Whines about family being killed. Then always goes on about family being killed.

Less whining and more motivated and determined.

Sabin & Edgar - Actually like sabin. He's a bad ass. Edgar whines about having to rule a kingdom.

And yet has tons of charisma and funds/helps run a resistance movement to stop the empire.

Shadow - Doesn't say anything. Has no depth as has no real story. Might as well be a summon.

Then I guess you didn't beat that timed part fast enough to save his life and get all his back story about Relm?

Terra - Whines about not remembering nothing and being a lil bich and then is a scared lil bich about everything.

And then ACTUALLY finds her place in the world and stands up for it. Unlike the protagonist from the other one.

gau - Yeah... What's his story again ?

One of the only characters with no story tied to the main story. You do however run into his father in the game (or can) and get his back story. But, hes never a whiner about anything. Big step up from the FF7 cast.

Setzler - 1 dimensional - look at me I'm a womanizer sky pirate. The plot twist about his broken heart surprised you did it?

Not a surprise just noting how it makes him NOT 1 dimensional. The 1 dimensional-ness is all a show boating front for the person he actually is.

Locke - Whiney goody two shoes.

Who never whines and is always self motivated and helping others.

kefka - Crazy murder clown that's just crazy...

And good at his job!

The other main villain is a weird purple octopus that can talk.... yeah...

Every FF has dumb reoccurring enemies.

FF7 - Cloud - Doesn't give a gak about anything to start with then starts to care, a bad ass ex solidier. Ends up with a background story and is all messed up because he's actualy a clone/experiment.

IS he a bad ass ex-solider? Or did the game just TELL you hes a bad ass? When did you ever see him actually DO anything bad ass?

Barrat - He's always angry all of the time. Family also killed and vows revenge. Except he has to fight his long lost best friend who blames him for his entire village being burned to the death . Then he calmes down a bit. Also beats his chest like a mad man.

I don't disagree with your assement of barret. He's more one dimensional then you depict Setzer to be.

Tiffa - Yeah she's whiny AF and kicks and punches people which is lame....

Agreed.

RedXII - Is actually a little kid trying to find his place in the world... Is whiny because of his dad. Then mans up, then his grandad dies. So hes whiny about that.

Doesn't Redxiii have a kid too? I seem to remember a shot of him with a pup?

Vincent - is on a quest for revenge vs sephiroph and is actualy a vampire that can transform into leatherface and later the devil.

Yup. Every 13 year olds wet dream.

Cait Sith - Is some sort of remote controlled stuffed animal.. Whines about having no friends...No rela depth might as well be a summon.

I didn't bother to mention him before because he's really not worth mentioning. Low hanging fruit is low.

Yuffie - Look she just wants to borrow your Materia. leave her be...

Dependency issues.

Aries - Whines about the planet suffering. Who cares..

Girlfriend in the fridge.

Cid - Lobs a spear at things punches his GF across the room and just wants to go to space.

I don't remember him punching his gf across the room lol. Do you think that will be in the remaster?

Sephiroph - He just wants to get his birthright as the ruler of the planet. Nothing to see here.

Does he though? Why summon meteor to destory it then? To quote.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sephiroth_(Final_Fantasy)

However, some game editors have criticized Sephiroth's character. For example, IGN's Smith has stated that "Sephiroth was certainly a good-looking fellow, but his motivations were about as clear as mud."[89] When comparing Sephiroth with the Final Fantasy VI villain, Kefka Palazzo, GamesRadar commented that he "seems as interesting as a dead accountant painted brown."[90] 1UP.com took a humorous approach to Sephiroth's several appearances after apparent deaths and in other games, ranking him third in their "They Is Risen" feature, which covered the ten most notorious video game resurrections. The publication noted that if the character continued to be used, Square Enix would eventually "run out of ways to remix One-Winged Angel."[91] GameSpy editor Ryan Scott called Sephiroth the "King of Overrated Characters" during GameSpy's villain feature for Dissidia Final Fantasy, arguing that gamers were impressed by him only because of his design and by how he killed Aerith during Final Fantasy VII.[92] On the other hand, AnimeFringe called him "the most notorious villain in the entire Final Fantasy series" and "quintessential bishōnen in the eyes of many fans -- male and female," comparing him with Kefka and praising his complexity.[93]

At least Kefka's motivations and actions are clear and consistent.

I think you are missing the point that the over arching villain is Shinra. They are responsible for killing bunch of people, and their greed leads to the meteor malarchay and keeping jenova alive...
Also they have "The TURKS" working for them. need I say more?

Shinra is the bad guy in the same way that the Empire is the bad guy. In that they are initially the organization that is the threat but they are not ultimately the true threat of the games. You don't have a final battle against shinra because ultimately their machinations don't matter.

I.... did not get that conclusion from your list. Their depth is non existent.

Just going to note this one, because I didn't feel like reading through all of them, and this one jumped out at me...

Spoiler:

NOT an ex-Soldier. He just thought he was. Also not a clone. Again, he just thought he was.

On another note, Kefka and Ultros from Final Fantasy VI have both turned up as boss fights in Final Fantasy XIV. Ultros turned up in a rather silly and comical trial battle in A Realm Reborn. Kefka was one of the fictional villains recreated by Omega as part of its quest to improve itself during the Omega raids in Stormblood. Doomtrain (also from Final Fantasy VI) also put in an appearence as another of the viliains that Omega recreated.

That's slander good sir!!

I cant remember the bit about shadow sort of rings a bell. I replayed the game at least twice from what I remember. I think I got to the point where I just didn't want to grind out the levels and must have missed a bunch of stuff.

Regarding cloud - No he isn't technically true however also is as he has transplanted memories... But you don't actually know that until much later in the game,at the start of the game he is portrayed as a cold hearted mercenary. By the point you discover the truth he actually is pretty bad ass, shoots meteors and beams out of his sword etc.. His character goes through a bit of a heroes journey and develops in my opinion. Obviously ya'll don't have to agree.

SO what do people think about Elden RIng? Are we potentially looking at Dark Souls 4 ?

Saying Cloud is whiny is ignoring about 99% of his Backstory. At the beginning of the game he barely even knows his own name because of some crazy gak that happens with the real badass of the series, Zac.

Zac is the true hero of series, mostly because he bitch slaps Sephiroth and Angelo quite a bit.

Also, this is happening!

I am eagerly anticipating more news about Elden Ring.

Terra had more mind fuckery than cloud and became more of a bad ass. And her super awesome abilities come from her esper heritage. Clouds come from..... making limit breaks look neat despite having no story basis for why a person could do them?

Uggh... ff8 too? Gross.

On a more serious note...

1.) Not really interested in it since VIII was the first game in the series that I disliked. Still do. But to each their own.
2.) And having said that, is the trailer supposed to be the remastered version? Because it looks *exactly* like what I remember from back in the day.

That would have a lot to do with Zac and what went on in Crisis Core. You should really look more in to what happened in the story instead of saying stuff you know nothing about. Normally you are a lot more thorough in your arguments but here it just seems like "Could is whiney and I don't like it! Wah!"

Also here is the Original FF8 Gameplay. I agree, these things are COMPLETELY IDENTICAL. Look at that gameplay. LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE THE REMASTERED VERSION!

So are Sephiroth's. He wants to summon meteor so that he can absorb the power of the lifestream which the planet calls to repair itself from the resulting wound. It is very clearly explained in the game.

Also, his clones and JENOVA are all acting according to his will. Whilst his real physical body may not be moving around, he is still affecting the story by sheer force of his will upon those who share a connection to him.

And writing off Tifa as pining for Cloud is doing a great disservice to her character. She identified that Cloud was not all there when he turned up in Midgar and was keeping an eye on him throughout the entire game up until the lifestream sequence in Mideel.

Zac is the true hero of series, mostly because he bitch slaps Sephiroth and Angelo quite a bit.

I really, really hope they don't add all that stuff from Crisis Core into the remake. Crisis Core was a fun game but Angelos and Genesis did nothing to actually improve the FF7 story and I think it actually harmed it in many ways by throwing in a load of extra stuff, especially in Nibelheim.

[

Nibelheim. Sephiroth runs him through and lifts him into the air. Cloud, pre experimentation by Hojo so no JENOVA cells, is then able to force himself back down, lift up sephiroth by the sword which is currently run through him and throw him off a bridge and into a pool of mako.

The Laws of Thermodynamics:
1) You cannot win. 2) You cannot break even. 3) You cannot stop playing the game.

I think making arguments in the vein of "You don't know anything did you even play this game!" are incredibly shallow considering how much of this I have talked about thus far. For FF8: If those are the improved graphics then what was even the point? For FF7 my point is the story telling in a FF might have never been worse then it was in 7. As for Crisis Core, I never played that. Are you making the argument that in order to understand who Cloud, the main character of FF7, actually is you need to play an entirely separate game that came out 10 years latter?

Either from nostaligia or your mind filling in the blanks to make the pieces fit you (and others) have made cloud into a bad ass. He's not. FF7 is full of a lot of okay to really good character designs and a couple really good songs and a whole lot of nothing characters held together by a decent outline for a story that was poorly executed. People loved it because it was the first one on the PS and not sprite based. People loved it because it was so long it was on multiple disks and that makes it better right!, and because "cinematics". FF7 is all show.

So yeah a game makes perfect sense!

Nintendo is getting good with the Switch too - I just saw the E3 for them and the switch is honestly exciting!

Oh I see. I don't really follow anything netflix so that'd explain why there was a sudden interest in something so old. I figured no one would know what it was.

I feel FF8 remastered is pointless, the same way I think all remastered games are pointless.. its a trick to get you to fork out £20 on something thats exactly the same as what you already own. with slightly better character models which looks like garbage compared with the outdated environment and even more garbage compared with current state of the art graphics...

The greater Pokémon community online is going bananas because apparently from the upcoming Sword and Shield and onwards you won't be able to get every Pokémon in a given game any more (as in not all of them will even be programmed into the game). For a series with the tagline "Gotta catch 'em all!" that's... questionable.
