I've recently bought myself a box of the original necromunda card terrain, I used to live this stuff as a kid. The issue is I really don't want to card to get ruined, so I'm thinking of ways to protect it, mostly the edges as it is placed in and out of the plastic walls.

I thought of using that plastic film you get in schools for books (at least it was there when I was at school) but I'm thinking it would be hard to get around certain parts.

Does anyone have any ideas or tips they could share?

Thanks

Liam

The only thing I can think of are the rolls of clear vinyl that you get from DIY stores. Problem is that it's very sticky, qand prone to trapping air bubbles underneath it.

Yeah probably something like the old Blue Peter favourite, sticky-backed plastic. I can see it being a bit of a mission though.

You are thinking of Fablon, the stuff you used to wrap books in. I am thinking that it will end up much the same as sellotape though, you will end up with peeling, yellowing and tearing.

What about hitting the cardstock with a matte varnish? I wonder if that might help?

does anyone think a very light coat of PVA would work? or is like likely to ruin the card?

Honestly....they hold up pretty well on their own. I wouldn't go around trying stuff unless you've seen proof of it working.

Check out battle systems webpage. They sell a similar product and I'm sure there were how to videos on there on how to treat the edges for longevity.

To be honest, I'd simply try to minimise the amount of times I assemble and re-assemble them. The only real weak point is the building with the square tower; there's only a thin secionf of card btween the hole for the tower and the slots for the bulkheads on the lower floor piece, and it is prone to tearing, in my experience. Even then, you can still use the building.

Sliding bulkheads in and out is the most damaging thing you can do with them.

There's a glue made for permanently sticking together jigsaw puzzles so you can mount them as posters (which seems daft to me, as you could just buy a poster), but I've used it on small cardstock terrain from White Dwarf and it seems to work (and hasn't turned yellow or peeled or anything in a few years). Jigsaw pieces are just thick cardstock, so it should work for you.

Clear coat spray? Not sure that will really make sturdier, but might protect printed surface and raw card edges from humidity and whatever you decide to apply on top.

The stuff you use on jigsaw puzzles and I have used to affix down paper on projects is called Modge Podge. It is available at craft stores, but not sure about in the UK.

I think the last time I used this was to cover a large tray with a thick paper piece that had a nice design on it and some Tinkerbell cut outs in each corner - just to pretty up the tray for my wife. Once it was affixed down with the stuff, a sealing coat with it and after years of constant use, wiping with a damp rag, etc, the tray still looks perfect. And we probably use this tray to carry food/plates and stuff 3-4 times a week.

My Novella Collection is available on Amazon - Action/Fantasy/Sci-Fi - https://www.amazon.com/Three-Roads-Dreamt-Michael-Leonard/dp/1505716993/
