Hey there! It’s been a while!

Thanks Dysartes, bbb, Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll and Ragsta for your comments on the dreadnought! I’m happy to hear you like where he ended up! Today, I want to share some more Plague Marines with you. They are old plastic models from the 90’s, but I converted them a little. You remember these guys?

Part of the reason I converted them was that many of them had already been kinda ripped apart. Even in my teens, I loved converting minis, but often I did not go through with my projects, which meant I was left with bits and pieces of potentially very cool retro miniatures. In the case of these Plague Marines, I decided to pick up the pieces and repair them as best I could. Here’s what I ended up with:

I already posted these guys on my MWG page years ago, but decided to go over them again recently to adapt their paint scheme to my newer style. You can still clearly see their origins, although they have been changed quite substantially. To nurglify them, I decided to sculpt on many pustules, as with the rest of my army. Actually, these were the first Marines I tried this technique on, and they inspired this whole army project. To bring them up to date, I repainted their weapons in a rust colour and added the newer 32mm bases with the rusty debris style. Here’s pictures of ever member individually:

And finally, a scenic shot in some ruined city terrain:

Considering these minis are old and kind of rare by now, I might use them as Chosen or something. I hope you enjoyed this update and liked the minis I showed you today. I’m looking forward to any comments from you! Until next time!

I love what you did with those plague marines!

You took a mediocre kit (yes, I remember when they were new and I much preferred the previous metals) and really made 'em shine.

Great job!

Hello there friends! It's been a looong while since I posted here, but I recently caught the Nurgle ... ahem.... 'bug' again, if you will. I realized I still need to finish my 4th squad of classic Plague Marines and my Daemon prince. Regarding the latter, I finally found a suitable solution to get around the problem that he is missing his legs: I decided to build my own from scratch, using a wire armature and then building up unto that with my hot glue gun. Here's the result:

I realize this technique is rather.. crude, but I have used it before to create a custom Ent/ Tree guardian figure, and it worked quite well. I think the rough look this creates will go well with the Nurgle theme. Besides, most (if not all) of this ground work will be sculpted over with greenstuff, so this is mostly just there to help me get started and lay a foundation for the actual sculpting work.

#

For now, the DP still looks a bit like he always skips leg day, but with further layers of sculpted detail, I think the thighs and calves will still grow in diameter, so this should be fine. I'll be trying to recreate the original legs for this miniature in their overall appearance, regarding the power armor look. However, I will add lots of custom detail that will make it distinct from other unmodified DPs. Think something along the lines of my previously posted Helbrute conversion.

You may have noticed I also need to add fingers to the DPs hands. I removed the original long fingers because I thought they were just too spindly and elegant for something as crude and disgusting as a monstrous creature of Nurgle. I hope I can sculpt something suitable here as well.
Anyway. that's all I have to show for now. Hope you enjoyed, and please stay tuned if you are interested to see where this goes. Any input and feedback/tips are, as always, very much welcome and appreciated! See ya!

Thanks gobert! Hehe yeah the shin guards are just a rough outline of what I want the power armor on the legs to look like. I cut out a pair of them to make sure I have a symmetrical basis for my sculpting work. Also, no promises on the goopy glue effect, most of it might get covered up but we'll see. Thanks for checking this out!

Btw, I took some more pictures before I get to sculpting. Sorry I didn't post them right away, but I only just realized I probably should have added some shots from different angles, so here we go:

I hope this shows off the pose a little better. I didn't want this guy to seem to rigid, and so I tried to get a more 'striding forward' pose on him. When seen from the front, it might make him look a bit 'squatty' like the 3rd edition Space Marines, but it's better in person. I also had to make sure to mount the body at an appropriate angle to maintain the illusion of gravity on the hanging tabard.

I also did not want to leave you all without a look at this guy's impeccably chiseled, nurgly buttocks. You can thank me later
In all seriousness though, don't worry. This will not be visible on the finished miniature, as it will be covered by the rear armor plates. Though I did play with the thought in my head of adding a little nurgling under there, peeking out from under the armoured skirt. But I think that might be just a bit much. If any of you have any thoughts on that, let me know in the comments please!

Adding the hot glue buttocks does serve a purpose though. It will allow for a more realistic look when I add the armor plates, because it ensures they will look properly sized as I can't make them too small.

Alright, that's all for now. I'll get to sculpting now I guess. wish me luck, and stay tuned for further updates!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
So I did a quick bit of glueing and sculpting, and this is where we're at now:

Still very rough work, but the basic outline is taking shape and the models silhouette is getting a bit more substantial. The uneven surface my sloppy sculpting work has created on the thighs should lend itself well to the god of rot and decay, and while I will add further, more deliberate detail on top, it will be totally fine to have some irregularity showing through from the layers underneath. I'm really excited where this will go now, and I hope I'll be able to do the original daemon prince justice with this mini.

I'm thinking I might add some of the typical, spikey trim of chaos around the edges of the armor. I guess we'll have to see if i can manage to pull that off. But one thing that is really inportant with such detail is to never try to do too much at one. This simple trick has helped me a lot in improving my sculpting work. It would be nigh-on impossible to sculpt that detail while the underlying shape isn't hardened, so instead, I'll wait for that to set and then work on the detail at a later stage, when I have a firm surface to work from again.

In this rear view you can see the armor plates/skirt that I added with cardboard. I still need to sculpt a kind of belt on top that will help tie together the torso and legs. However, I left that step for later in order to not mess up my work on the thighs. I hope you can tell from this shot what I'm going for here. I want this DP to look like he used to be a Plague Marine in power armor who ascended and is now still wearing his suit while having his rotted flesh inextricably melded with his armor.

Alright, thanks again for checking this out! Please stay tuned for more if you like where this is going, and feel free to let me know your thoughts and suggestions!

Hey there! Quick update on the progress on my DP: I had another quick sculpting session in which I added greenstuff to the lower legs. Here's what he looks like now:

There's still some gaps between the sections, but thats fine. They will be filled in later with some soft armor sections.

While sculpting, I had another idea how I could spice up the DP and add some ick-factor. I think I'll make one of the legs a bloated, festering lump of flesh that starts bursting through the armor and the joints. I think this will add some much needed grossness to the conversion. I'm thinking the forward leg should lend itself well to that. I'll try to make it look like the armor split open and the flesh is spilling out. I'll keep you updated on the sculpting progress on that.

Still just basic shapes for now, I'll start adding detail later when all the ground work is done. I already added a pin to one leg. I'm guessing I'll have to pin both legs and add generous amounts of both glue and putty to keep this monstrous pile of bitz upright. As a base, I'll be using one of the sculpted SM Cybot bases, but with added debris to cover most of the obvious, repetitive detail.

That's all I did on the DP. However, I seem to have contracted a rather severe case of Nurgle fever (forgive me the bad pun), as I am now back to tinkering with the other remaining models I want to add to my collection. I got really inspired by one of Skalk Bloodaxes old threads about his Nurgle army, and that motivated and inspired me to get back to work on my own stuff. There's still 7 Plague Marines that await greenstuff details, and I even finished building an Aspiring champion Character to lead my army (unless that job is filled by the DP). Here's what I have:

This guy was made using mostly CSM parts. I added a scythe from the Zombie regiment kit which was modified to bring it to the 41st millenium.

The gun is a conversion from an old 2nd edition flamer. Now it's supposed to represent some kind of toxin injector as seen on one of the newer DW character models (I forget which one, the new names are weird).

I gavemy leader loads of trophy heads, a special helmet, and a trophy rack to make him stand out. He is also elevated on his base to make him stand slightly taller than the other Marines. His gorget was made from simple cardboard and superglue.

I also took some pics of the initial sculpting work I did on the 7 man Plague Marine squad. Here's a guy with a converted Khorne helmet to which I added a GS horn:

This squad will be the fourth and probably the final one in this collection. I'm not aiming for a huge army, this is just a fun side project. Here's the sergeant for that squad:

And finally, another guy with a custom horn:

And that's all the pics I have for today. Initially, I was going to finish the DP, the 7 man squad and the Champion and then call this project done. Flipping through Skalk's old Plague Marine thread, however, I couldn't avoid getting inspired to do a little more. Yesterday, I had the rather crazy idea to add a squad of raptors to my Nurgle force. After checking out my available bits, I was super happy to find that I basically have all I need already at home. There's some old Khorne Berzerkers I wont use for anything else, I still have some regular CSM heads, and I even have a set of 10 classic heresy era jump packs from Forge World. So I'm happy to announce that, some time in the future, there will be Nurgle Raptors/Assault Marines in this thread.

Anyways, that's all I have to share for today. I hope you liked it and I would really appreciate any feedback and/or input you guys wanna throw my way As soon as I get home, I'll get cracking on some conversions. Hope to catch you later!

I like gloopy butts and I cannot lie! I couldn’t help but laugh out loud at his ass cheeks and gaping hole! I for one will be disappointed if he doesn’t get a butt nurglings, that would be hilarious. The other additions are also cool, will they be getting barnacles like the OGs?

Thanks for your comment gobert! Happy to hear you like the stuff so far and that the gloopy butt gave you a good laugh! I am still kind of on the fence whether I should commit to the butt nurgling or if that would be too silly. I want my Plague Marines to be a bit more serious and scary, and that might take it over the edge... on the other hand, the opportunity to do something like that will likely never come up again, and it is is very tempting to just have some fun with such a large miniature in certain places. Maybe I'll just give it a go and see how it pans out. Unfortunately, I didn't get any sculpting done on the DP since my last post, but stay tuned on that front!

Regarding your question on the Plague marine squad, you were entirely correct about the barnacles. I decided to focus my sculpting attention on that squad to finally get it out of the building stage and on to the painting, which is why there is no progress on the DP for today. However, I am proud to announce that the squad is now finally done. I also managed to take some quality pics of all the plague marines using my lightbox, so I can show off what I was working on over the past few days. Here we go:

Here's the squads Plasma gunner with a Zombie head:

And finally, the sergeant/champion:

I might still go in and add some extra texture with a stippling of liquid green stuff. If that pot hasn't already dried up completely, that is. After that, it's finally on to the painting stage!

In other news, I also made decent progress on another project I foreshadowed here: A Nurgle Raptor squad:

And the sergeant:

There's obviously still a lot of work to be done on these guys. I need to remove or cover up all of the Khorne iconography and once again sculpt on the obligatory barnacles. Now, you may notice there's already some GS on some of the models. That is just a base layer to help me sculpt further detail later. I want to give these five Raptors distended nurgly bellies/breast plates. This should add some flavour and will help cover up the Khorne decorations. Stay tuned to see how this squad turns out!

And that's all I have to show for today. Hope you enjoyed and stay tuned for further progress. As always, I'd love to get some input on the stuff I showed off here, so feel free to let me know your thoughts! Until next time!

Thanks a lot for the compliment Cap'n Facebeard! Glad to hear you like the conversions and that they reminded you of the older editions. I think lore-wise, they were peak 40k IMO, and I kinda miss those days. Though I gotta admit I was never much of a tabletop gamer, and still struggle to find the time to get a game in to this day. Maybe I should also focus on playing older editions, like many hobbyists seem to do nowadays ... It would certainly reduce the need to keep trying to adapt to the incessant rules changes. I'll have to think about that.

In other news, I managed to finally finish the sculpting stage on my Raptors and Champion as well. I quickly snapped some shots of the 6 models before I start painting them, for the sake of completion and reference down the line. Here's where they are at now:

Raptor 1:

Raptor 2:

Raptor 3:

Raptor 4:

Raptor Sergeant:

Champion:

These Marines got a lot of additional texture since the last time you saw them. This was done using Greenstuff, as well as an extra stippling of Liquid GS on certain areas that still seemed a little bit too bland. It will be exciting to see how all the different surfaces turn out once they are all painted up. I'm really looking forward to seeing them come together. However, it seems I will have to head over to my local Warhammer store pretty soon as I'm running out of Elysian Green, the main colour for this army. I hope i can squeeze out a basecoat or two before that pot runs completely dry.

By the way, there's sadly no progress on the DP for now, as I have mostly been focusing on getting all the squads done. That pesky bugger keeps sitting on my desk unfinished, taunting me to finally get him done. But I promise I will, soon enough. I'm making a concerted effort to finally finish this project and blast through the last few minis, so I'm confindent I will get to him in the near future. Having the basic shape of the legs figured out was definitely a big step, and the rest of the sculpting work from now on should be a bit easier as I won't have to worry about messing up the scale for example. All that remains now is detail work, which is admittedly time-consuming, but requires less planning and coordination, especially since this is a Nurgle project.

And that's all I have to show for now. I'm really hitting my stride with the hobby atm, and I'm planning to make use of that momentum to make some serious progress on this project. All your input and positive feedback has certainly been very encouraging, and for that I want to say thanks! I hope you like where this is going and that you will stay tuned for further updates. Until next time!

Thank you so much Olthannon! Happy to hear you like the nasty little buggers! Speaking of momentum: This thread is overdue for an update, so here goes.

While I may not have posted anything here in the past few days, that doesn't mean I was inactive. Quite the contrary. I got a decent amount of painting done recently, and since I managed to finish all the sculpting beforehand, I am now able to batch paint all of the... shall we say "small fry" (i.e. the Plague Marines, Raptors and the Champion, but not the DP) all in one go. While this means that each step will take a little longer, it also means that when I'm done, most of the army is done too! YAY

Before I show you a visual update on what I got done however, I wanna adress a quick issue I had, cause it might be interesting to some of you painters out there. The problem I ran into when batch painting was that I had run out of Scorched brown. Luckily, I had some Rhinox Hide which I had purchased for just such an occasion.

So I applied a small test spot of that base color next to some Scorched brown onto the handle of a chainaxe, and was then presented with this image:

WHAT? What the is going on here??
As I'm sure you can tell, the paints don't really match up AT ALL, despite GW listing them as equivalent on their conversion chart. Needless to say, I was furious.
Thankfully I had done the test before applying it onto all the minis, but now I was presented with a new problem. How to fix that awful color so it matches my old, faithful and very beautiful Scorched Brown?

Looking at what came out of my brush when I cleaned it on a wet paper towel, I began to see the difference. Not only is Rhinox hide considerably darker, but it also lacks almost all of the richness, vibrancy and warmth of the original Scorched Brown. It is a very cool, desaturated paint, almost purple in hue. Applying my limited knowledge on color theory, I decided that my only chance of fixing this was by mixing in some other paints. To be precise, I mixed in a vibrant red called evil sunz scarlet. A LOT, of evil sunz scarlet. Like, a quarter of a pot's worth, I would guess. And lo and behold, it actually fixed the issue! After some very vigorous shaking, I tried out my newly created mix and found it to be an almost perfect match to the old Scorched Brown, both in saturation as well as in brightness.

Long story short, if you are ever in a situation where you absolutely need to recreate Scorched Brown, mixing evil sunz Scarlet (or blood red, if you're lucky) into your pot of Rhinox hide should do the trick. Just be sure to mix in a few drops at a time and slowly work up to the right shade, because there's no going back once you've added too much.

With that out of the way, I began blocking out the base colors on all the metallic areas with my newly created mix. However, it was getting late and I was already pretty tuckered out from work at that point, so I decided to call it for the night. Here's what I ended up with:

All these minis have already received an Elysian green basecoat and a Rotting flesh drybrush. Today, I will get on to blocking out the remainder of the metallic areas and see how far I get. If any of you happen to be interested in my paint scheme, it can be found in one of my earlier posts in this thread (should be on the first page, depending on your settings).

So yeah, progress is chugging along, slowly but steadily. Unfortunately however, looking through all the cool Nurgle-related inspiration on the internet, I kind of got an itch to add some more stuff to this army now. I realized GW are actually still selling the old Chaos Defiler, an iconic model which I am ashamed to admit I do not own a single one of. I sorta feel like I might want to change that. They are apparently pretty good in the recent meta I hear? Not that I would get to play much, if at all… Furthermore, some cool conversion ideas are floating around in my head for another Helbrute/Dreadnought, not least because I spent too much time going through Skalk Bloodaxe’s old but insanely awesome and inspirational Nurgle thread.

Thus, I am now torn between finishing up what I got and calling this “fun little side project” done, or giving in to the friendly, kind-hearted call of Papa Nurgle, beckoning me deeper into his soft, putrid and maggot-infested bosom…

What do you guys think? What should I do? Finish this project, or get some extra goodies for the Plague God to play with? If so, what would you choose? Maybe I should only buy new stuff as a sort of reward, once I have finished all the other things I wanted to make? - Hah, good one…. What self-respecting hobbyist would ever do such a ridiculous thing

I’d love to get your thoughts and opinions, both on the minis I showed today and on what I should do with this project. Also, I hope you liked this quick little update and will stay tuned for more. Anyways, I’m off to painting now. Catch y’all later!

Alright, just a quick visual update on what I got done:

Since the last time you saw them, I added a wash (AP Strong Tone) across all the models. After that had dried, I picked out the rusty areas with a reddish brown (custom mix) and then with some Jokaero Orange. I'm quite pleased with the overall result, however there was a slight issue I encountered. The day after I had applied the wash, I realized much to my dismay that the dried wash had cracked for some mysterious reason. Here's what it looks like on certain areas:

This was quite frustrating and I was sorta bummed out that this batch of Marines is now kind of ruined... well, as much as you can actually "ruin" any Nurgle model, I guess. I created another thread here on Dakka where I discussed this, and I would like to extend my plight here as well, in hopes that somebody on here can help me out:

If any of you know of a direct replacement for the old GW Agrax Earthshade wash (matte), please, PLEASE, let me know.

I have been struggling with glossy finish, cracking paint and other problems for a while now, and I just need a good replacement that can solve these issues. Anyway, I do have to say that it is certainly not as bad or noticeable at a regular tabletop distance, and the squad should still look fine next to the others.

In other news, I wanna share a funny little anecdote here. I recently asked my girlfriend to remind/encourage me to finish my Nurgle Daemon Prince before I get any new models. And, well, what can I say, today she surprised me with this: When I went to my desk, I saw the DP laying there, a rolled up piece of paper stuck in his mouth. "That's odd," I thought, "I don't remember putting that there..." I unrolled the piece of paper, and here's what it said:

So sweet She's now particularly interested in seeing me finish this piece, as she actually contributed in the sculpting process herself. See those pustules on the mini's left greave? Yeah, she made those herself. Pretty cool

So any way, that's all I have to show you for now. Thanks for checking this out, and stay tuned for further updates!

Woah! First off, absolutely phenomenal use of old bits and conversions, they all look great and the simple colour palette reflects the rot and nastiness very well.
Second, I was just reading this a few weeks ago, and you happen to update it after two years a day or two later? What are the odds?

I say continue with the project, there are so many other nasty, devilish, slimy, pukey possibilities to be explored...

Haha yeah, my posting schedule is all over the place I'm afraid However, I am making a conscious effort to update more regularly now while I work on my Plague Marines and got the momentum going. Thank you so much for your kind words and your input! Also, I ordered a Defiler, so thanks for enabling me

Quick update: I managed to finish all the minis yesterday evening. Pics to follow. Just have to take better photos with the lightbox this time, so please stay tuned.

Furthermore, I decided to take the plunge and ordered a new mini: a Chaos defiler is on the way. However, since I've finished everything else on the To-Do list now, I guess I finally have to sit down and get to work on my Daemon Prince. I'm a bit anxious, but I guess I just have to power through it. Can't really mess up a Nurgle model now, can you?

Anyway, thanks for checking this out and stay tuned for more. Update soon to follow!

No prob, I love this blog and your nurgle conversions. They slot into that more grim, dawn of war to 5th edition feel that I never got to experience, yet love nonetheless. These just feel more like DG then the actual minis to me. I don't quite know why, but maybe it's the reuse of old parts. The kitbashes, green stuff, lack of entrails hanging out or whatever and painted pieces like legs and stuff being used as part of the conversion that really ties it together and hits that sweet spot for me. Can't wait to see that defiler. Good luck, and exalted.

Thanks again for your nice comment bullisariuscowl, you're really encouraging me to keep going The classic look from 5th edition is probably not least caused by me using the older minis. Just like you, I prefer the old ones, firstly because the new ones don't do it for me visually (at least many of them don't) and secondly, because it's simply easier to convert the older stuff and I still have waaaay more bitz for them in my bitz box. It's just more fun I think.
I was there for 5th edition, though only as an onlooker, as I never really got to play and didn't have that many minis. Nowadays, I'm drawn again to the older editions, because the artwork, the lore and the rules just speak to me in that comforting, nostalgic way. I recently downloaded the 5th edition codex, and I gotta say, to me, it's just way cooler than most of the stuff we get today, especially the artwork and lore. Thanks for your support!

Ok, finally done all the pics. Had to do some editing to get them right, as they looked different to the previous pictures although the minis are pretty much exactly the same scheme. Let's get right to it! I wanna start off with the squad of Plague Marines:

Unfortunately, I forgot to take a group shot, but I don’t have any matching terrain on hand for a nice action shot anyway, so that will unfortunately have to wait.

Let’s move on to the next unit, my Raptors.

Reading through the 5th edition codex, I realised it is not really “legal” to have any Raptors dedicated to Nurgle, as that type of unit cannot receive the mark of that god according to the codex. That’s not to bad though. I was inspired to do them, and they were a fun conversion, which is what’s most important. If I ever wanted to field them for 5th edition, I would simply forego the Mark of Nurgle and it’s fine. It still looks better if they match the rest of my army with their decayed look, IMO, so I would argue it’s ok that I nurglified them, if just for the looks

Anyway, here we go:

The Aspiring Champion, equipped with a Chain Greataxe. I was not aware of that weapon existing when I did the conversion, but when going through the codex later on, I noticed that would be a perfect representation:

I realize I should probably add some more special weapons to the squad, such as plasma guns/pistols and melta guns, and bump the squad up to 7 members. An Aspiring Champion with a powerfist and better pistol might also be nice. Maybe that’s a project for the future, we’ll see.

Finally, let’s move on to the Champion of Nurgle:

This guy was initially intended as a retro representation of the new Biologus Putrifier, and as such he has a set of blight grenades slung on his belt, and comes equipped with an injector pistol (made from an old 2nd ed flamer IIRC).The Manreaper was added later, in a desperate attempt to find a CCW that fit with this model after a plague knife and powerfist had both failed. I guess I can count him as any of these characters in a pinch, and he could also be a sorcerer or even Chaos Lord if I need him to be.

And that’s all I have to show off for now! Again, I want to thank everyone who commented here for their support and encouragement, as it really helped me push through the remainder of my backlog. You guys rock!
Now, all that’s left to do is my Daemon prince and the Defiler that is on the way. Maybe, grandfather Nurgle will bless me with further putrid visions of even more possible conversions I can do. We’ll see. Either way, I suggest you stay tuned, as I now no longer have any excuse not to work on my DP. Until next time!

Wow! That exploded in a short while! Awesome work Feisty, some really cool conversions and the muted tones of the paint job for super well together. A really cool decayed vibe for them. Now get on with that DPs Butt Nurgling!

Thank you so much gobert! Yeah, like I said, I wanted to document the process a bit more and update more regularly.
Regarding the DP: The butt nurgling is coming! Although I'm afraid I've been procrastinating on the DP a bit. I think I'm still anxious about messing up the sculpt But don't worry, I'll get to it! There's also something else in the works now (see below).

Thanks everyone for your comments, votes and kind feedback, it is very encouraging to read! To be honest, I haven't been working on my Plague Marines in the past few days and instead 'procrastinated' by painting up a Fighting Tigers Predator tank. However, the DP is not forgotten, and a new project just arrived last night:

The Defiler is here! Muahaha!! time to get converting! Hope you will stay tuned for what I do with this awesome, classic kit! See you next post
