I thought about getting a new box of eschers with the upgrade sprue to make a squad of astra militarum, but then I saw the cadian upgrade sprue and said "yep, I'm definitely not taking that cadian upgrade sprue" and shrugged it off.

Half a sprue would indeed be enough for making a squad. So two core boxes of escher for one upgrade sprue seems the right amount if you want to optimize plasma guns. Or 4 boxes if you don't mind making 2 more squads with flamers.

It's weird, I like the inventiveness of the Necro expansions but they are straying from the whole "80s music video casts fight to the death in the sewers" image expected from Necro.

Not to mention the whole WWI in Space idea of Imperial tech.

I might get the new Delaques, they could work in a GSC army or just to have.

Just noticed that the new Necromunda box isn't available in Japan. What's up with that?

I would suggest Escher and Goliath are more 70s/80s than 90s. Punks and massive muscly hulks.

There are literally Escher in the first compendium for Warhammer Fantasy Battles 1E. Goliath are basically Lord Humungus the gang from Mad Max. Orlock are standard modern gang. Van Saar and Delaque always seemed less defined—to me.

Has anyone seen any advanced reviews or unboxing floating around the internet? I haven’t found one and was considering a preorder from my local shop, but not until I know what’s in the book.

Scotland, but nowhere near my rulebook

80's sewer deathmatch nails it.

I just checked - Dark City (He can tuuuuune!) came out in 98. The Matrix (Woah) came out in 99. The Delaques came out in 95. So they can't have influenced the original Delaques. The modern version should absolutely live in fear of Rufus Sewell and water.

What was the big wave of sci-fi trenchcoat movies in the early 90s I missed? Syndicate is definitely a good call, but at the same time that had a large dose of infiltration and trying to hide the fact that you're a murderborg squad.

I thought the original Delaques were based on spies in trenchcoats, and cowboys in dusters rather than anything Sci-fi or action movie based.

In all honesty, their style cues were probably based more heavily on skinheads than most of us would like to admit.

You don't see what?

Google "skinhead trench coat" and see a bunch of vintage pictures of individuals who could sub into a Delaque gang at a moment's notice.

Necromunda was created by a British company staffed by young men who would have been familiar with the UK-originated skinhead culture.

It's the Occam's Razor explanation.

King Mob of the Invisibles could be a specific character reference (but he was created by... a young British man familiar with UK-originated subcultures).

They always reminded me of the prisoners from alien 3. Especially that rapist who basically put on delaque goggles.

Yeah, for most North Americans "skinhead" has become synonymous with "white supremacist gang member" (like the Aryan Brotherhood) but the history of the subculture in Britain is much more complicated and contradictory (and has contained both racist and anti-racist groups, right wing and left wing groups, etc.)

It's not THAT contradictory. Most skinheads who aren't racists try really hard to signal it with "Skins Against Racism" stuff, but ask almost any British person and they will tell you that regardless of the origins of skinhead fashion, they assume most skinheads are racists, due to a pretty well-earned reputation. TBH they don't really exist that much any more, but you sometimes see them at rallies for gross stuff lead by grifting charlatans.

Please educate an Australian. What the hell is a "bummer"?

To me, that is just a situation, person or time that is very unenjoyable.

Glory is fleeting. Obscurity is forever.

lol. I have the same flag in my profile that they do, and I also have no idea what that refers to.

My guess would be a misspelling of "bomber" (as in the jacket), or, and this one is a complete shot in the dark, some kind of regional slang for a sleeveless white undershirt.

Yeah, and if you Google "squirrel gangsta", you get this:

But that doesn't mean it's representative of either of the words described. You just get the specific thing you search for.

When I searched for "skinhead trench coat", I saw... several images matching the Delaques. Only a few. Even with those specific terms, the majority deviated significantly, which makes me think it's not really a common connection. Now, I'm not British, but unless there's a lot of undocumented stuff in that area I'll have to assume that no, skinheads and trench coats are not that typical a connection.

I'be been British for a while and I can't say skinheads are ubiquitous to trenchcoats or vice versa.

Lots of goalpost moving. We've gone from "inspired by" to "ubiquitous"?

Your contention is that Google will show you whatever you search for. Ok. Go try to turn up *any* pictures of individuals from any of the other proposed sources of inspiration that come anywhere near to the cumulative Delaque style (trench coats; bare chest or thin shirt; bald; goggled). Your examples must predate or be contemporaneous with the first Delaque. I'll get you started: some of the suggested sources included spies, prohibition era gangsters, and cowboys. See how many bald spies or shirtless mafiosos you can locate.

Neither are mohawks ubiquitous with punks, but we all readily accept that Goliaths are inspired by punk styles.

We all agree that certain gangs like Goliath and Escher and Orlocks appear to be inspired by the style of youth subcultures that originated in or flourished in the UK between the 1970s-1990s. And skinheads are a youth subculture that originated in and flourished in the UK during the same time period. It's delusional to deny such an obvious connection when it's sitting right there for you.

Flashbacks to the "nooooo redemptionists look nothing like the KKK" days of this thread.

Re The old Delaque style argument

So something that seems to date to the 1990's couldn't possibly look right in the 41st millenium?
You know, the 41st millenium... where the main faction uses a medieval look of platemail, swords and shields.

In a poor, dirty crowded underhive, a gang member would look 'dated' for having his head shaved and wearing a big coat?

Fair point!

And for the record, despite calling them dated, I do still love the 90s Delaques. Honestly, I love all the Necromunda OG models except the Goliath plastics that came in the original starter.

As someone who is British and a few years ago was massively into both Mod and Skinhead subcultures, trench coats aren’t really a thing associated with skinheads. Doc Martins, acid washed jeans, checked shirts and braces and a bomber jacket is the classic skinhead look. There’s the odd photo of skinheads in trench coats when you search ‘skinheads in trench coats’ for some reason (although they’re more overcoats than trench coats/dusters), but it wasn’t ubiquitous enough for that to be the look GW was going for I don’t think. Mohawks being associated with punks is much more of a thing pop-culture wise.

Not that any of this matters.

There was never any connection between trenchcoats and skinheads in my very german-derivative neck of the woods. Jeans, black tshirts and nazi tats.

The closest thing I can think of as dodgy regarding trenchcoats is either the stereotypical 70s British flasher (though that’s more dirty rain mac than a trenchcoat) or the Columbine murderers. Otherwise, it’s all film noir/hard boiled detectives, Sisters of Mercy fans and Matrix cosplayers.

Why would I try to support an argument I never made? I merely disagreed with your idea that skinheads = trench coats, and that a highly specific Google image search of this would be adequate proof of the matter.
Plus I take any excuse I can find to spread that squirrel picture, admittedly.

Goliaths? Punk?

Roided out muscle-heads is not something I'd generally associate with the punk subculture.

Long black trench coats are just not cool these days. They can look creepy, like modern Delaques, or nerdy like the 90’s ones. Like I’ve said before, some old looks age well and still look cool today, some come back into fashion, some just look horrible to modern eyes.

I know the argument goes that anything could be in fashion in the 41st millennium, but I don’t live in the 41st millennium. I live in 2021 and 90’s Delaques look awful to me.

Disclaimer: everything I just said is my own subjective opinion based on my own irrational sense of taste and style.
