Depends on what you're after from the box, and how close you believe 9th edition to be.

There are models for both the Primaris and the Death Guard which are currently only available in the set, for example, like the Captain in Gravis Armour and the Lord of Corruption. You get a decent chunk of a starting army for each side, too - I can't comment on whether everything is seen as good, but there's a lot of plastic in that there box.

The models in dark imperium are good value for money regardless of edition. you can always sell the half you dont want and recoup some of the money to get a decent discount on a starting army core.

If you are asking if SM/ DG will be goof in 9th edition thna nobody knows.

Nobody knows even if 9th edition is going to happen or when its going to happen.

If I was a betting man Id wager not for a while yet. Until at least the next wave of primaris marines is done and another campaign book and PA books are finished. So maybe a year at the earliest. This is purely spit balling speculation on my part and I have noting to base this on other than I wnat to finish my army before new edition drops so need at least a yera do do so

The 40K 8th rulebook is mostly obsolete now anyway - I wouldn't let it affect my purchase of Dark Imperium either way. You can get the 3 pages of detachments from elsewhere, and for everything else there's the Battle Primer and Chapter Approved.

However, if you like Death Guard and Primaris Marines, it's a great value for the miniatures.

Even if a hypothetical 9th edition launched soon (and there has been zero credible information pointing to that), all those Marines and Death Guard would still be good.

The value of Dark Imperium is only tied very loosely to the continuation of 8th ed.

I assure you that I know for a fact that 9th ed will happen.
Or as close to fact as makes no difference as it's in the same category as the sun likely rising somewhere around the world tomorrow is....

It's the when that's the question.
Personally I don't think it will happen in 2020.

By “know for a fact” do you actually mean “I’m speculating”?

Of course there’ll be more editions of 40K. It’s how GW gets a shot in the arm. But unless you’ve inside info you’d like to share you don’t know anything about the next edition’s likely timing.

Dark Imperium is chock full of great models. The Rulebook could be sold off if you’re paranoid about it being invalidated, but it’s also got lots of nice fluff and gaming ideas. It’s still a great value set (in GW realm of value). Buy it if you like the miniatures, and no money has been ‘wasted’.

The models are worth it, if you'll use or flip them for a good price. The book will be a big waste and is hardly needed with how much of the rules don't even reside in it these days. If you can get it for a good price and find the models worthwhile then yes, get it. I think its a good deal for the models alone at current GW standard.

Transitions into 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th were backwards-compatible with Codexes from prior editions.

9th edition is going to remove all regular space marines and there will only be Primaris Marines, so you should get two boxes of Dark Imperium.

...all jokes aside, the box is a good deal and I highly doubt anything from it will be completely rendered useless whenever 9th, 10th, or 11th even drops. It's worth picking up if you play those factions, IMHO.

IMO Know no Fear is the better one. Dark Imperium has a lot of stuff I wouldn't use. In Know no Fear only the aggressors or whatever they're called are 'uncool'. And Hellblasters are the most useful thing in all the start sets.

GW need to do something about these 9th Ed rumors. Even if they said that they'll be doing a (much more likely) 8.1 rulebook after PA it would at least stop people from stating rumors about 9th Ed as a fact and confusing newer players.

At least we all agree that you buy Dark imperium for the models which are good value for money.
The BRB on top is certainly nice if you are just starting out and like to get background fluff and cool pictures as well as some utility(Core rules, basic missions, maps, and detachments).

There will be a 9th edition yes. But I am expecting it to be something more along the lines of what the generals hand books are doing in AOS. Very minor rules changes and all the previous editions codices still usable.

I mean, a company has no obligation to comment on baseless speculation. And doing so wouldn’t stop people starting/perpetuating speculation and passing it off as rumour. So, no, GW will stay quiet until their marketing plan says its time to do anything... if they even are.

You are aware that you just said exactly what I did, right?

So no, I'm not speculating at all. Like you, I know for a fact there'll be a 9th edition.

 JohnnyHell wrote:

Never said I did.
But if it's speculation on the when you desire? Then I'm going to predict summer of 2021/2022. One of those. We'll see. Either way, not summer 2020. Because they're going to milk 8th ed for at least another year.
And for further speculation I'm going to predict that when it arrives it'll be backwards compatible with/mostly just a refinement of 8th.
But, as these two points are speculation, I guess we'll just have to wait & see how9th turns out.

Maybe current political events turn out badly and GW goes bust.

No 9th Ed.

I'd be suprised if the economic situation wrecked GW. given their manafacturing is mostly in the UK, conventional econoimic wisdom is that GW might stand to profit.

I'm still using my Assault on Black Reach models and they are from 5th edition. So those models in Dark Imperium will still be usable (maybe not competitively viable) for a while.

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

I worry that the death of the Dark Imperium box would be the death of the units unique to that box: Captain in Gravis Armour, Primaris Ancient, Lord of Contagion w/Plague Reaper, Noxious Blightbringer, Malignant Plaguecaster and all but 6 of the Poxwalker sculpts that exist today.

It's happened multiple times before (Ork Deffkoptaz, most of the Cultist sculpts).

This!

I seem to buy the boxset for every new edition and I always use the models in following editions. If someone is going to collect an army you may as well purchase the boxset that has a little better bang for the buck.

Games Workshop is going to update their rules at some point and make the older rules in boxsets outdated. I'm glad they constantly update their rules. Have you seen the ruleset from 1st Edition..both glorious and horrible.

8th edition rules are closer to 1st edition than they have been for a very long time. We have move stats back and guns have AP values again.

I picked up a copy of the Dark Vengeance sprues when they went up on M2O around Christmas, with the Cultists being a good chunk of the reason why - I hadn't realised that along with the unit leaders and the two special weapons, there are three of the basic infantry Cultists who are only available in that box. It's a really weird situation for the unit to be in.

Why do they 'need to' they never have before? Look at the Advent of AoS and the end of WFB.
