This has come about because there is a Tau player in our hobby store that doesn't like the cornetto trilogy, mainly hot fuzz. Purely because Hot Fuzz brought about the meme of "the greater good".
Now he can't play a game or mention "The Greater Good" without at least 5 people repeating "the greater good" in monotone voices.
I'm curious if this has stretched into other areas of the hobby for people. If there is any mainstream pop culture that's had an influence of how you see workshop hobby things.

Similar concept but unrelated to 40k: I detest the Kardashians because it makes it irritating to talk about Star Trek DS9 (where the Cardassians are a major force).

Yeah, that's really annoying. I'd find it annoying, too, and tell 'em to cut it out. And I don't even play Tau.

It's a two way street. Necrons used to have "I'll be back" protocols after all.

I'm annoyed that the Necron resurrection rule is no longer called "We'll be back."

I'd say that that's not the same thing as having a bunch of idiots repeat the same memes over and over again. It's similar to monty python memes in dnd, really-- memes for uncreative, unclever people.

I never said I do. I said people in the hobby store do it.
But to call some of those genuinely nice people who sometimes need to be told to reign it in a little "a bunch of idiots repeat the same memes over and over again" and "memes for uncreative, unclever people" because they wanted a bit of a laugh it a bit much.

No, but I must have. My opinion on the matter stands, and is perfectly justifiable. Hearing the same "joke" over and over again for years is obnoxious. I never said you were the one doing it, either.

Nah, people who constantly make out of character references and jokes in RPGs can go right ahead and get fethed. bantering during 40k, whatever, who cares, but when you're supposed to be contributing to a game I instantly want you gone. There is absolutely nothing worse than the guy who squats in your group contributing nothing but the most obvious pop culture references imaginable then looking around waiting for people to laugh and acknowledge them.
It's been years since I've run any narrative game based on any kind of popular universe or even loosely connected to a popular fandom, just because it makes that fething guy inevitable. You are playing a Star Wars game - we know you watched the star wars movies. Yes, that's no moon. Yes, I am your father. Good. Great. We are also familiar with the movies, it's why we're here around this table with you playing the game.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

As someone who used to play Space Wolves I can't stress how much I agree with that. The community making the same dumb joke is part of why I stopped.

To slightly misquote the movie “Dr Strangelove”; “You can’t have fun here, gentleman. This is a tabletop room”. If someone else having a cheap laugh causes great offense, you should probably do something else. It costs you nothing to ignore it and if background chatter is interrupting the game just politely ask them to stop interrupting. I’m always surprised at how many people are against levity in their entertainment.

There's levity, and there's repeating the same meme over and over until it's not.
I'm pretty sure that's what they're talking about here.
Like, I can imagine the first time someone did a "For the Greater Good" joke, it'd be funny. Probably the second. Maybe the third. Maybe even the fourth. Can you see where this is going?
It's not that it's not amusing (although that is subjective) - it's that it's repetitive to the point of boredom. Though, if that doesn't bother anyone at OP's group, they have no need to change anything about it.

Not in 40k, but most of my X-Wing and Guild Ball games feature (usually) various apposite quips, they X-Wing ones are mostly movie quotes whilst Guild ball varies from telly-pundit boswellox to spins on the homage characters (Guildball current has 'not' Bane, Wonder Woman, Iron Man, Ygritte (from Thrones Jon Snu), Moana, Maui, Solomon Grundy and a fair few others)

Whenever something comes up in a game that makes us wonder what GW is smoking when they write rules someone will utter "Fair and Balanced" in a disbelieving tone. It usually gets echoed by whoever is on the other end of the combo.
I could see it getting annoying eventually.

Imagine you walk next to a road and a car beeps at you for no reason. By itself that's fine and wouldn't significantly bother you. Imagine if every single car did that every time it went past you whether you're at work, at home or whatever and imagine that went on for years. Cars beeping constantly for years on end. That would be a different matter.

How many times are you allowed to tell a joke or meme ? Have the meme police released the official numbers yet? From the sound of it, several people in the group find it funny enough to keep doing it.
I get that communist space fish is serious business but we’re all playing a game that’s ripe with parody and nods to pop culture. There’s characters based on Margret Thatcher and Lionel Johnson. One leads a race of football hooligans and the other led an all male order of quasi priests from a fortress literally named after a gay bar in Nottingham. None of this is that deep.

I think you've missed the point. At a certain point jokes, especially bad ones and especially ones you're the butt off, go from funny to annoying. Nobody is saying you can't joke around with things just that when the fun stops, stop.

If people are chanting the greater good outside this dude’s house, I suggest someone call law enforcement on that cult. This is more like getting angry at hearing a car horn on you drive to work. It might not be the highlight of your commute but it really doesn’t matter.

Yeah, this.
40k isn't exactly a serious setting, and I can't imagine playing a game where there's no smiles, no laughing, no silly jokes.No-one's saying "no jokes allowed here!". But if every time something happened, I'd get the same pop culture reference back? I dunno, I'm not sure you can blame anyone for finding it tedious. But, as many people have said, if that's not a problem in your group, it doesn't need changing.

Apparently, only people with gakky jokes who aren't creative enough to think of something new in the past ten years are allowed to have fun. When your "fun" is solely in mocking and ruining other peoples' fun, most people stop caring whether or not you're having fun.

There must be an element of knowing your audience. Reference humour is best used with restraint. If you are overusing it to the point that you are making people hate the source material on that basis alone, you are just being annoying.
Makes me think about my own use of "I don't want it" over the last year, although I think that is more of a coping mechanism really...

This really does touch a nerve for you? Personally I fail to see how retellling a joke no matter how old stops you from just playing on with your game or moving on with your conversation. If you just don’t like to hear a particular joke because it’s old or over used, just ignore it like a rational person.

Completely missing the point; the joke is that the victim is getting worked up over nothing. Saying that will only reinforce that it's working.

Yes, I can tell. The context of the original post was that he had seen a group of people mock a player for playing Tau, for literally years on end. So yes, they're donkey-caves for doing that. And if you'd do the same, you're also an donkey-cave.

Depends on the person. There is a certain individual who goes to our FLGS who does not have an inside voice at all (and this is over the usual tumult and banter you hear on a games night there). He will make constant Chuck Norris and Deadpool jokes etc. that can clearly be heard over the din of everyone else.
Sometimes you cannot drown it out. Personally I think that Tau player has a rod up his bum as that particular one is harmless. Does he not like the Simpsons too, as they did the exact same joke long before Hot Fuzz did it...
