For me, I mostly like to put models on the table that actually manage to do something before I need to remove them again. I'd love to run a huge tide of relentlessly marching Warriors on the table if it actually posed a decent threat. At least Tesla Immortals has some decent damage output, and may kill a unit or two before I have to put them back in the army case.

Most people going second don't get that opportunity because of the outdated IGOUGO system.

Necron Warriors look fine, not great but not terrible either. I’ve used the gauss rods from the Immortals kit on mine and they look definitely better than with transparent green rods.
Flayed Ones, Destroyers (all variants), some resin HQs and the Monolith could all use a revamp. If Necrons are to get such a treatment, I’d expect those units to be redone (maybe adding a new weapon option in order to nudge Necron players to buy them again).
As for the Silent King, we’ve had rumours about him and Szeras for months now, so it’s very likely he’ll get a model as well.
This could mean anything for the game. Considering the importance of his “return” on a galactic scale (I’d argue he’s “bigger deal” than a Primarch), the rumours about 9th ed in summer 2020 and the build-up of the Psychic Awakening campaign, him being the main focus for a Necron revamp coinciding with a new edition (new starter set) would be logical.
We’ll know soon enough, next Saturday.

I believe the Silent King will not receive a model and instead be used only as a trigger for a Necron update and possibly a plot advancement on a larger scale (maybe involving Tyranids as well).
Szeras has already been previewed and I just don't see another large hero model coming out for necrons, especially since Szeras has been scaled up to become a centerpiece. If some of the rumors are to be believed, the Void Dragon seems more likely just to add a bit of variety to the necron range.

The Void Dragon waking up would probably a bigger issue for the Imperium than the rift honestly. I don't see it happening.

Luckily, C'tan come in shards nowadays, so their strength can be conveniently adjusted to account for possible inconsistencies with previous lore.

I think it's a bit premature to assume a new codex release.
So far we've seen 5 "Primarch level" mini's. Gulliman, Abaddon, Magnus, Mortarion, and Ghaz. of these
1 has come out with a new Codex (Morty)
1 came out as part of a update that included a codex and a campaign book. (Abaddon)
all the others have first been introduced as part of a capaign.

The Silent King not getting a model seems very unlikely. The way they are hyping this up leads me to think this is going to be a major Necron release, similar to what Chaos got. If the rumors of the Necrons being the main villain of the next edition are true.
I would be absolutely shocked if the Silent King does not get a model.

No, but when you're playing the worst faction in the game from a table top point of view you need every advantage you can get, and running sub-par units in a faction that was already sub-par to begin with is handicapping yourself even further.
I've played lots of games against my friends using Mauler Fiends and Chaos Marines. I've lost some and easily won others. Winning isn't everything. Seeing painted models, spending time with your friends. That's what the hobby is all about. But recent imperial intelligence has revealed that there was in fact a backup, created by a servant of the Silent King known as Cawletek. Once more the Silent King can use the command protocols to lead his people, and with the hefty perscription of Xanax by his personal Cryptek, he's no longer depressed and sees himself as a failure. -Necron 9th Edition Codex

I think I'm not quite sold yet on the notion this is going to be a big necron release. I certainly hope it is and I enjoy speculating and reading others' speculation about what might be coming.
However I'm 99% sure the silent king is getting a model. My bigger worry given the current necron codex is, to quote my friend when I showed him the video, 'what's the betting it's a great model that's terrible in game?'

Something else to think about, jokes aside. Remember last year when Apoc launched and they said in multiple articles that all of the factions would be getting Lords of War? I could see a Character like the SK and then some kind of Necron style Knight equivalent.

I’d settle for the SK being a great model with terrible rules, rather than an ugly model with cheesy rules. Because rules change quickly, models not so much.
If I had to guess, the SK himself would be a Lord of War. Probably on a bigger piece, like a transport, with other models. Something like the Ossiarch guy on a bigger Ghost Ark or a bigger Barge.

They already have a lord of war in the obelisk/vault which tbh I'm happy with since it isn't just a necron knight.

9th edition box will be Necrons vs Astra Militarum! Silent King will be separate box riding elaborate Command Barge. New Necron heavy troopers (just gonna call them Pariahs) will be in 9th edition box. AM will be new plastic take on old IG regiment. Unknown which one, I was hoping for Mordians but likely Catachans (not bad either).

Why would GW squat a faction they spent the last couple of years developing and investing in? That would be a waste of time and money on their part.
If anything, they would use the Void Dragon to expand both the Ad Mech and Necron ranges, by adding new "heretic" type units and their counterparts. Doesn't mean the Void Dragon didn't get sharded though. It would make its subjugation by the Emperor more plausible.
I'm sure the Emperor is powerful, but powerful enough to take on a C'tan at full strength? I'm not sure about that.

Here's my, admittedly, crackpot theory:
- Sarekh has come back to take the reins of the Necron people and unite the dynasties. Tyranids and Chaos are becoming to dangerous, so he needed to step in
- In order to enforce his reign, beat the Tyranid menace and lead his people towards the next stage of existence, he has to find the seven Dragon Balls, aka. the shards of the Void dragon
- These have been spread across the galaxy and need to be reclaimed in order to bring about Necron supremacy, so we have a reason for Necrons to invade various places/races
- We get an update to both Necrons and Tyranids
- Necrons will be Szeras (Sarekh's "agent" on the table) + Pariah and a Shard of the Void Dragon LoW. Sarekh will remain in the shades and a plot device.

They wouldn't, that's why well never see him released. If the Void Dragon was whole and not a shard he could easily overpower his enslavers and wipe them all out in the blink of an eye.
It would also be the end of what we consider Adeptus Mechanicus, seeing as the Void Dragon is no longer influencing their development.

Not only that. The internet wisdom is not always true. Many units that are considered crap (like eldar banshees) are actually pretty good and usable. They aren't just point and click. I mean yeah theres units that just sucks like the stompa, servitors, etc... but even then most units when played by good players can win games. Why? Because we aren't playing agaisnt Nick Nanavati everytime we play. Normally we all are mediocre players, some better some worse, playing agaisnt other mediocre players, so in those cases skill on playing is more relevant to win that what units we play. (Not lists, because even when you are using below average units , you need to make lists with some tought behind them to make them work)
