Admittedly, those new storm shield Primaris are going to look pretty dope in a Dark Angels army. Definitely digging the storm shields and more knightly regalia.

No, but it's entirely possible that the rules were written with 9th edition in mind and then was made backwards-compatible with 8th.

I'm dubious that this is the actual Marine starter set. The last time GW put out a big box the Marine side had 10 guys and Ragnar. This one appears to have 10 Marines, 3 Shield Vets, 3 Agressor Devs, 3 Bikers, a Lieutenant, a Chaplain, an Ancient, a Captain and the Executioner guy. That's... a lot more.

that big box though wasn't a starter set. for comparisons sake, Dark Imperium had 10 intercessors, 5 hellblasters, 3 inceptors, 1 ancient, 2 Lts, and a gravis Captain

for 22 marine Minis. this would be 24 marine minis so a bit more but not a LOT more. so.. it's possiable.

Dark Imperium had 53 models, this new one apparently has around 57. So yeah, this could easily be the 9th starter.

I just realized how massive and awkward the holsters are too. Great idea putting a red hot griddle of a gun into soft leather holster strapped over your kiss the chef apron that you decided to tuck into your under-suit next to your soft parts

I always liked the mag plates for that kind of thing. It's not the worst thing ever, I just don't like holsters on marine "pistols" generally because it just outs how stupidly over sized they are. It's really not a pistol, or a weapon you would stuff into a holster at that scale.

I am excited for new necrons, if only cos I don't really see anything in 9th edition so far benefiting CSM much ...

CSM has no primaris. CSM has no weapons that fire out of line of sight unless you go forgeworld (which is getting revamped anyway). So terrain makes things harder for CSM since imperium can just load up on all your thunderfire cannons and basilisks.

CSM has few good blast weapons anyway. Am I supposed to shoot my battlecannons and demolisher cannons at hordes ?

CSM vehicles fight well in combat anyway, so being able to shoot in battle? well, not going to be a game changer if you ask me. Maybe they will raise the points on defilers cos of this and make them useless ...

Soup is less of a thing? mono faction CSM is in a bad place right now so... erm... yeah... Marines have all these cool legion rules and doctrines that are good. CSM as a mono factions has zilch of these things.

Makes planes better? CSM has zero actual planes. We only have one helldrake that can be charged and killed in combat so it doesn't act like a plane at all because it keeps wanting to fly down and fight something... (again lets not bring up forgeworld because forgeworld is getting totally rewritten for 9th ed).

I got a feeling necrons are the new bad guys in 9th ed starting because CSM is going to be terrible when 9th ed first drops...

Oh well... at least we have cool models... sigh.

GW doesn't plan things out that way, they're just giving xenos some love because chaos has pretty much been THE bad guy for all of 8th edition

I am just saying all the stuff GW wants to buff, CSM doesn't really care for. We use daemon engines that stomp stuff in combat anyway, we don't have out of sight artillery that don't care about terrain, we don't have good anti horde blast weapons, and we don't have good proper aeroplanes. So erm... yeah. Forgive me if I just don't feel that excited so far... :(

that's an intreasting idea. could be we've already GOT 9th edition codices with marines and sisters

What would make them 9th editionish though. Mono bonus when 9th core rule already promotes mono?

I had a lot of ideas how to decrease firepower in 8th without changing any stats or general weapon rules. Proper terrain rules could go a long way, especially in my group where it's pretty rare to get a clear firing line on anything.

Other way around: they designed 9th with them in mind. Which means less "sucks in both editions" stuff that being designed for two editions tends to do to books. In theory at least.

1st point: Wait till war of the spider. I have a feeling that'll be getting fixed.

2nd point: Chaos Knights have a bunch of weapons that'll love the "shooting at hordes" rule, along with stuff like vindicators and missile launcher havocs.

3rd and 4th points: Hard agree, hopefully CSM have ways to get around the negatives to soup and get an actual flyer of some kind.

I'm also concerned about tanks getting to shoot into combat since one of my main anti-tank strats was to just throw warp talons at the problem and try to get a nice wrap. But that's something we'll have to adapt to... Especially if the changes to strategic reserves make getting them into combat easier. And also terrain changes, I'd love it if changes to buildings meant that my love for CSM tacticals over cultists meant something (it's already something like 2.5x as hard to kill them as cultist, which still isn't hard enough. If ruins take that to "actually decently difficult" I'll be happy.)

The 10 assault intercessors in the photo look like they’re two lots of 5 poses (well, 2x4 and 2 unique), which definitely makes me lean towards starter box.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if the box is a little bit more expensive. 2 extra marine models doesn’t seem a massive jump to make me think this can’t be the starter, for sure.

I’d say it’s 2 sets of 5. The sergeant and the model next to him are the same model, just one with the sergeant bits and the other without them.

You mean like a new special rule that's, say, universal, to everyone?

All the original regular Primaris Marines were 2 lots of 5 poses.

They were two lots of 5 bodies, but the models weren’t assembled as 2 lots of 5 identical poses like these are.

The super grainy pic with the new Monolith also has a new version of the existing floaty Destroyer in the bottom left. I wonder if "Destroyer" will now be a term applied to Necrons with non bipedal legs and other body mods?

8th edition was just a public playtest for 9th edition.

Well there had been some hints there being other type of destroyers then just that floaty thing with arm cannon. "Destroyer" has been all around term for Necrons who do body mofications and wants to murder any organic thing within their reach.

And I gues that the big necron with cannon, axe and claw is a new destroyer lord then.

That's kinda what they've always been. They alter their physical form and basically have a boner for destroying everything, because they're kinda bonkers.

I made an assault shield Breacher Primaris by taking the sttandard of the Lord-Relictor from the first AoS starter/the push-fit SC. Now Primaris get their own skelly-toting standard bearer And finally some official Assault Primaris, though I have quite a few of those already. Luckily jump packs and regular SM chainswords look good on Primaris, even on Gravis armour (I made a Smashswearword with TH and jump pack for the same Kill Team as the Breacher).

I'm not a fan of the robes under the chest armour, either. I will have to see if it's better to sculpt them going over the chest armour or dremel it out and turn it into a loincloth and resculpt belly plates.Or a mix a mix of both for regular vets and officers.

I love the new Destroyers and the creepy looking robo buddies, big buff "monsters" and twisted little critters with them is just perfectly Grimdark (just like Marines and Cherubs). The warriors might be a sidegrade conceptually, but the sculpts will be a lot crisper than the old sprues, so I guess that's not too bad.

PS: Can someone please photoshop the handlebar armour of the regular SM bikes on the new Primaris bikes to see how that looks? That'd be really awesome.

Looking for a Skaven Doomwheel banner to repair my Nurgle knights.

Aye, the Fall of Damnos novel has a Lord who becomes a Destroyer over the course of the book. Hopefully the tripod Lord will also get a full kit and not just be a starter box exclusive.
