Batreps for sure. They're a good reminder of what makes a 40K/Fantasyhammer/LoTR game enjoyable. Switched to these when White Dwarf changed their batrep style. Aside from that, the lore videos are kind of cool. There's a stupidly lengthy series of videos on the Siege of Vrakks.

Sorry, didn't notice the intent of the thread at first. Stop motion would certainly be an interesting idea! The Miniwargaming batreps are awesome, but watching the models suddenly cut to the next turn may look a bit jarring. for new players, this can give an easier idea into how everything moves around the board.
Don't suppose you have a name in mind for the channel? Would love to check it out once you get started.

With painting tutorials, Do you like quick tips or lengthy advanced videos?

Sorry on the delay responding - generally with tutorials I'm looking for a specific technique - how to paint lava bases, cog gears on admech cloaks and the like. I prefer to see the entire process rather than an abbreviated jump between steps, it makes the concept easier to grasp.

Look at how war gamer girls channel does batreps for warmachine. the camera tracking/angles, explanation of each move/action, the music for each faction, and the after action strategy discussion. it is all very polished and presented well making it an enjoyable watch.

Agreed, her bat reps are some of the most enjoyable. It feels far more immersive than just watching people roll dice and push models around.

If it isn't something like War Gamer Girl's style of battle reports, I would like to see something like some of the Warmachine battle reports I have watched, where the game itself is slightly sped up with a voice over from the players about what they are doing and the thought process behind it.

edit: With the voice over being done post game, I like that players can track where the game may have gone wrong, and potential scenarios they could have tried differently, since it provides good food for thought.

I've kinda flitted around with my 40k viewing - most consistantly is my love of LeakyCheese, he blends retrohammer stuff with fluff discussions, occasionally, and very tastefully weighs in on community stuff and sometimes pretty fancy modeling tutorials, particularly for old metals or expensive FW stuff.

Though I feel like their quality has been slipping a little of late, really like the official GW painting tutorials - can't emphasisze enough how useful and re-assuring having someone unpretentiously cover the basics is, while gently making an inroads with more advanced techniques. OFC, love Duncan Rhodes, too, he's the coolest guy 10/10. I shop around a lot when it comes to painting tutorial vids, usually I'll check out a few techniques before trying something for the first time. I think an important thing with painting videos is to be as demonstrative as possible, but also to offer effective results. I've seen a few videos where people are clearly really hot gak when it comes to painting, but they really seem to go to immense lengths to add endless extra steps of quite subtle darkening and lightnening, all the while emphasizing "you don't need to do this, but I like to (because I'm such a skilled and brilliant painter)". At the same time, however, I do also kind of hate it when someone clearly has omitted a few steps, and the finished mini looks miles better than what's being done in the tutorial. Rather than a 2 hour video covering how to paint a Plague Marine from start to finish, I like "this is how to paint a glowing plasma coil", "this is how to to chipped armor", "this is how to paint fatigues" in about 5 minutes.
That said, Bard's Craft makes some excellent longer videos on how to do some pretty impressive terrain pretty simply and accessably. His style is very chilled and comfortable, but also with some delightful witicisms and flairs of narrative-inspiring details.

Occaisionally I like to watch out of box reviews of just kits, be they old or new. It's hard to see exactly what's in the box on the GW site sometimes, if at all.

Another channel I really like is the Yogscast's Games Night. Their Necromunda campaign was really fun, and their 40k stuff was great, if a little rough-shod at times. I think they nailed 2 really critical things. The first was having a nice setup. Absolutely excellent terrain, and great staging in terms of cameras, lighting and backdrop helped them immensely in terms of watchability.
Filming a board game is inherently difficult ( watch this for a guide of exactly how NOT to do it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBWi0eFzdi0 ), but I think Games Night did it really well. They have a lot of space beyond the board to work with, and enough cameras in enough places to keep the camerawork dynamic and immersive, without being impossible to follow. However, another, imho totally critical element is the banter/interaction. The Games Night guys are very used to being in front of the camera, and (for the most part) are pretty relaxed and friendly with each other. Their small talk flows nicely, and you can tell they they're all having a laugh. Their tactics aren't the most cutting edge, but they explain what they're trying to pull off strategically for the most part, and all in all it's a pretty enjoyable watch. I really like their sit-and-paint videos, too, again for the slightly absent-minded chatter inbetween pretty decent hobbying tips.
There are a bunch of channels that I think really can't do this, and it feels too uncomfortable to watch. Tabletop Tactics are a channel I used to watch a bit, but I really grew sick of a whole bunch of things that they did - Lawrence, while a nice dude, and clearly an excellent player, feels really overbearing, forcing catchphrases and nicknames, alluding to tactical techniques that are hidden behind paywalls and endlessly plugging sponsors and his paid content. Their games usually seem pretty one-sided, too. Lawrence has alluded to games they don't publish becuase they're unfun, but it seemed to me like he almost always beats his opponent pretty handily. A lot of the 'cast' also seem to struggle with being in front of the camera, and aren't natural or comfortable at all. Like Tabletop Tactics, Winters SEO has lovely scenery, and really top-end strategy, but... again, I feel his camera presence really lacking. If you're going to make videos about a battle report, it's going to be a monster undertaking - you'll need energy at a pretty constant rate for not just the duration of a normal game, but also all the time it takes to present and film that. TT feels forced and overenthusiastic, whereas a lot of other YT wargamers just.... lack the charisma.

Best of luck with your channel! I think going to the community is probably pretty daunting, but could very well stand you in excellen stead, at the same time!

Just fan made animations. Watching people roll dice is real boring and listening people repeat what I've already read in previews is tedious.
If I wanna roll dice I'll roll dice. If j want previews, I'll read. If I'm going to use what precious little data I have, it'll be for something I can't do- animations and that sort of thing.

If I like a channel I'll watch (actually pretty much just listen - whilst painting) to whatever they're covering.
Tabletop tactics are my fave and do most of the above, no paint guides though
Striking scorpion does battle reports and reviews
Bolter & chainsword for painting tutorials
Winters for battle reports
Plenty of others

Certainly. There was a french channel who did battle reports with stills only, pictures and "diagrams" (not sure for the word) that where very close visually to the white dwarf reports of old. Don't know what they used but it was really clean and easy to read and still are the best BR in quality I've seen so far (and I used to watch a lot of them, both in english and in french).

I drop the link if it can give you some ideas (in french) : https://www.youtube.com/user/LaGuerreAuGarage/videos

I regulary watch Tabletop Tactics, Kirioth, Wolf Lord Rho, 40k Theories, and listen to the Splintermind podcast.

40K is a niche hobby, and there are quite a number of established conent producers, so I would suggest that you find a particular speciality if possible. For example, Splintermind focus only on Aeldari (and primarily Drukhari), WLR mainly does Black Library excerpts and discussions.

9th edition is by far the biggest thing happening in 40K, so that really needs to be your focus; nobody is likely to care about a new channel's 8th edition tactical insights. Necrons are probably going to see a big upsurge in popularity, so you should really be pushing out content for them rather than starting with one of the most boring factions in the game (apologies Nid players).

So after a bit of brainstorming and looking at feedback from this forum and others. We are going to change our ideas slightly and go with the current releases as opposed to doing random factions. So nids can wait Instead we are going to be working on some 9th ed previews then get straight into Necrons and Space Marines. We still need to improve our tech but this will come shortly.

Thanks for the feedback.

Just remember the bignames likely get products earlier than you - either having agreements with GW directly or because many are attached to stores and thus get stock earlier than consumers. Whilst this doesn't meant their videos can come out before launch day; it does mean that they have all that time before launch day to prepare their videos.

So you won't be at the forefront of things, barring some exotics like Forgeworld models. So focus on quality of what you show since you won't be able to focus on speed and rarity of your content early on.

Might not be helpful, as it's a rather different specialty, but I mostly watch model conversion videos.

I do hit up the occasional battle report, but I'm more likely to watch one for a system that I have trouble finding a game in (BFG and FO:WW were the last few I looked up before all gaming died off), rather than 40k.

Alright! So I checked out the videos you posted. Pretty cool stuff! Looks like you both put a lot of effort into these videos, and that’s certainly appreciated.

I think the strange thing is that it almost feels kind of like a podcast. This isn’t a bad thing of course, since some YouTube channels are exclusively podcasts. I liked what you did with your third video by having a bit of text to reference while you were talking about close combat. Scrolling through the website in the Indomitus video was a pretty good idea too, but wasn’t quite as organized as the third video. Maybe visual stuff like those might help?

Also, might be just must me but the volume seemed... kind of quiet? It got better as the videos went on, but I had some trouble hearing some of what you were talking about while discussing Indomitus. You mentioned you were getting a new mic, so that might fix it. Aside from the quiet, audio quality is pretty on-point.

Keep it up! I don’t do this whole “subscribe” thing, but I’ll definitely keep checking you guys out.

Thank a lot for the feedback! Yeah, many hours went into these videos, so I'm glad it shows even if there's a lot that could be improved.

We were planning to show our faces, if only in the top corner, however my laptop is from 2009 and the video quality isn't great. I bought a cheap hd webcam, but my laptop can't handle it and the video was out of sync with the audio. Maybe it's something for the future when we can improve our gear. Once the virus has passed we'll be able to try stuff like batreps, just depends on the amount of time we're able to devote.

We're a little more organised now and I'm getting better at editing, hopefully we'll keep improving. The new mic has arrived, so hopefully that'll fix the audio issues!

We're looking to release videos as often as possible, I reckon 3 per week should be doable. We should have one on 9th edition shooting coming out on Monday. Hopefully we'll motivate you to subscribe one day If not, any kind of interaction on the platform really helps promote the videos and the channel. Commenting, liking, sharing. I'm not really that into social media, so I totally get where you're coming from!

Really appreciate your support

WarGamerGirl's were by far my favourite battle reports for all the reasons you listed. It was the perfect mix of close-ups, medium shots, rules explanations and on-screen tracking, as well as keeping her commentary to-the-point and focused on the game rather than constant interruptions to talk with her opponent. I can't stand reports that're top down where I can't see anything and the constantly moving cameras of other channels similarly get old. WintersSEO and GMG (mostly for A Song of Ice & Fire) are about the only channels I can consistently watch since MiniWarGaming changed their style to desperately try and be like PlayOnTabletop, although they still have the best AoS battle reports out there (which isn't saying much).

PlayOnTabletop obviously have fantastic production values, but there's something so... 'American Sports' style about it that just comes off as really quite cringey. The commentary feels like they're trying too hard to be a professional sports caster as if 40k isn't some joke of a ruleset, whilst the 'banter' usually feels so forced and that neither player is all too into it, like there's a sniper on them.

I cancelled my sub for this very reason. its a shame as they were so good. I think they get more new subs than the ones that drop so they might not see the true picture as the balance sheet won't show it.

Thanks. You have exactly explained why I can't really enjoy their batreps even if they are the best produced in all of youtube. Thats why I normally prefer Tabletop Tactics. They just feel so natural. Theres a great chemistry between them even if at times they get too distracted. But even then, is actually funny.

But as everything, it all depends in what style do you prefer.

It seems they've gone back to the old style judging by their first 9th battle report and comments they replied to praising them for going back to the old style.
