Ha! I was going to ask if that was a toy Lockheed Dragon in *your* pocket!
Magik is a very cool character, and her updated look in the comics is...something else!
She's got a rather...detailed backstory though, especially to get her to her good, true powerset, so yeah, maybe it would take a solo 'Magik' film to get there.
SkavenLord wrote: I’m not familiar with the New Mutants. Was Magik a big deal in the comics?
It... depends.
Several storylines revolved around her, but there she went from introduced in Xmen as a 'kid sister' to 'traumitized teenager' (temporal de-sync in a hell dimension... basically) to 'brief villain,' was de-aged back to 'kid sister' [Shadowcat had access to her sword and magic abilities but wouldn't use them] and then she was dead of an anti-mutant virus. I kind of lost track after that.
That current 'now' picture is completely unrecognizable to me. Looks like an awful Final Fantasy character, to be honest.

*Throws hands up in the air out of exasperation* She's a Marvel character. As with all of them there have been so many retcons, rewrites, and reboots one loses track. Previous posters have pretty much covered it though.
Just remember, when your teammate’s two main powers are “Teleport us the heck out of here” and “Murder them all with your giant arse sword”, you need to be very specific when you shout Now! at them.

I remember from her first incarnation and yeah they have gone very much for the sexy demon girl in the comics.
They have her attitude right in the clip which is good.
She is also best friends (lots of people played with the idea it was more) with Kitty Pryde - an alt version of her taught her how to fight before she had to kill her and they are linked - Kitty can use her Soul sword.

Just to be clear because it hasn't been mentioned, but she's Colossus's little sister specifically, which is mostly what keeps her relevant.
She's not... at all my favorite character. She's cool and all, but no one really knows what to do with her because she's so overloaded with backstory baggage. I love the X-Men, but they have so many "resurrected secret twin alien clone from the future" storylines that it can be hard to take their universe seriously. For the most part, I can ignore all the nonsense and enjoy the story in progress even when that story is more nonsense, but Magik is one of a handful of characters whose presence never seems capable of overcoming the baggage.

I do know what you mean - often writers missed who she was beyond Sexy Demon Queen or the Teen BFF of Kitty Pryde.....but then alot of writers alos forget Kitty is a trained and lethal assassin.
The lack of finality in the deaths of most superheros is a running joke but she did stay dead for quite a long time.....
I think if they were newly written today Kitty and Illyana would def be a favoured couple in comic book land.

Maybe, though Kitty and Colossus are one of the more beloved couples out there. I actually think one of the great modern disservices is that women can't have relationships without them becoming romantic. Sometimes best friends are best as friends, and there's a lot of great dynamics when that's also your boyfriends sister.
And Kitty wears a lot of hats. Right now she's a drunk pirate. She was awesome as headmaster of Wolverine's attempt to run the school after Cyclops killed Xavier too.

I am fine with her as BFF but just suggesting it would be obvious route for a couple these days
I am not upto date with current stuff but Kitty was often just the girlfriend.
I did enjoy her and Pete Wisdom as a couple but that was a very different Kitty (again) - I also liked when she and wolverine worked together and he acknoweldged her fighting etc skills

Losing track of all the iterations again, but didn't Wolverine train Shadowcat as an assassin in one of the earlier ones?

Not quite - the Ninja Master, Ogun trained and brainwashed her as a weapon /host, however I think Logan does train with her as well and certainly is aware of her skills.

The Kitty/Colossus relationship was creepy as hell. He was ~20 or so, she was 14. By the time he called it off, he'd gotten a girl pregnant in the Savage Land and 'fallen in love' with another woman during the whole Beyonder saga. At which point, Wolverine fed in into a bar fight with Juggernaut to teach him a lesson.

Fair enough. I didn't read a lot of the Shadowcat stuff until she was much older and already replaced by Jubilee.

Well, you're not wrong- it was popular. But it was also super-sketchy.

Older guy - younger girl is usually popular - just look at Vampire shows, films, books etc. Probably to do with girls being more mature than boys as a teenager?

In fairness to Colossus, he refused sex with her, even when she practically begged when they thought they had only few hours/days to live.
I'm sure they wouldn't write it today, at least that way. It was bit of a different era - I remember how Spider-Man used to have hots for Dagger, who was 16 at the time. Only in retrospect it seems like "Hmm...".

Yeah I don't like that new one at all. Too 2000's computer game. It will NOT age well, trust me. Also that Anime sword is daft.
I liked Magik but most writers didn't handle her well as she was so weird and powerful. Basically, Illyana has a nasty side and you never really know if it's her real personality or just influence of all the demonic knowledge and powers she is privy to. She is bit like Wolverine, capable of doing things which unsettle others and not regret it. She is also very ambitious - not unlike Raistlin - like when she took over Enchantress' castle and tried to go after Loki which immediately came across as a bad idea and it was. I don't think she works well as a solo character, she needs this mystery around her which sorta disappears if she's the focus of the story.
And yeah her post-Inferno backstory is a huge huge mess.

In the middle of the Brood storyline? Yep. In a very paternalistic moralizing way, and then encouraged the relationship, despite her age.
But they get rather...involved... a few issues later (when they're back from Japan), and only really stop because Storm walks in on them.
As for a different era... it wasn't really that long ago, as it wrapped up in '84. To be honest, I'm shocked it got by the comics code, as girls that young weren't even 'supposed' to be thinking in those terms. Young teens in serious (or frivolous) relationships is a 21st century sort of thing for the 80s, when it happened, we didn't talk about it. Well, sometimes, but mostly for the shock value (but that was a 'guy thing,' social standards being what they were/are).
I don’t know. I think “teenagers being teenagers” was considered more natural back then and has become troublesome as our notions of consent have evolved and become spotlighted. The 80’s gave us Revenge of the Nerds and Sixteen Candles and Stephen Kong’s It.

Aaaaaaaaand now I’m picturing a 50 foot tall gorilla wearing glasses and trying to use a typewriter.
Saw it, and it was very uneven quality. In some parts it was great, particularly in the first half of the movie. Some parts were very clumsy and felt like straight-to-video effort. This really would have needed some 20+ minutes of reshoots and few more millions for special effects. Much of the final battle was off-screen and the ending was slightly anti-climatic.
I really liked the basic premise, but it all fell bit short. ATJ's Illyana was dominating the scenes but her character was not well defined. Same goes for Roberto whom felt too flat. This was very much Dani/Rahne movie. It really felt like they had very good vision but started filming a draft script, then realized they needed reshoots which never came.
Buffy homages were fun but bit heavy-handed: "We're totally ripping off that show - and here's the exact episodes we used as a source material!".
Bob McLeod panned the movie because his name was spelled wrong and the actors were not a good visual match to original characters. I felt latter was a bit unfair - yes I myself also prefer that the actors look the part, but you have to be realistic. Actors also need to, well, act and often the best available actor is not the one who fits the mold best. At least here they cast actual Native American instead of just taking some generic white actress and dressing her up as an Indian which they would have done 30 years ago.
Some said this was the worst X-movie, but I don't think it was. This was not anywhere as big an insult to an X-fan than Last Stand. Maybe it was like 3rd worst.
Well competing for worst you have Last Stand, Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I have a hard time believing TNM is worse than any of those.
The only way we can ever solve anything is to look in the mirror and find no enemy

She was the most powerful character of the original '80s New Mutants lineup, then she died and was largely forgotten for 20 years. Then some writers who were old fans of her resurrected her and put her into focus, and now she is actually one of the most popular X-Men characters. In fact over last 10 years X-Men have done hardly anything without Magik's teleport discs.
But she is not 'iconic' in the sense that over most of the 'classic' stories, she either stuck with the much less well known New Mutants, was de-aged kid with no powers, or dead. So along with other New Mutants, she doesn't have 'recognizability' her brother has.
It would be interesting twist if she was in a Deadpool movie. I mean, her brother is so why not?
