I completely understand the awkwardness of using mouse and keyboard on a TV... of course there are options like Steam Big Picture, but by the time you've set all that up, it's a lot more work than just getting a console.
But... surely if someone else wants to use the TV, you're out of luck with a console too...?
Not if you've got remote play with the VITA BABYYY YEAAAAAHHHHH.
I was planning on a PS5, but I just built a new gaming PC, so I can't really justify a console in addition. I might pick up the Slim/Pro version in a couple years once it has had a chance to develop a good library of exclusives.
I can always just stream my PC using a Steam Link if I want the console experience in the meantime.

Oh absolutely I would be, but if the pc is hooked up to a monitor in another room I can at least use it there when someone else wants the TV.

don't bother with a new console until it's a year old, the early models of a console tend to be big clunky and have some ahrdware quirks. I tend to wait and buy the "MK 2s" a year or so later.
This is true, although Sony tend to come out of that better than Microsoft on reliability (and I think just build quality actually of the machines). The legendary red ring of death, that was first got me to switch Xbox -> PS, I only had one go on me a friend of mine got through *six* consoles.
My reason for waiting would be the prices to come down a little (free game or accessory bundles and things like that), perhaps a higher storage version as well as a few more killer apps for the machine.

Sony has had some doozies back before the internet made it easier to track. The original PS notoriously overheated and fried itself and the PS2 has a super common failure that nobody notices because it stops it from playing games from the first year or so of the system's life. They've had a pretty good track record since the PS3 though.
If it hadn't been for the FB login, it would have been the Oculus Quest 2. VR development is progressing at lightning fast speed and its a shame they dropped the ball on this one as the machine itself is excellent. With great regret, the Oculus Go is as far as I take it with VR, for the time being.
Have no interest in the new offerings from MS nor Sony, and would prefer to keep going with the XBox One. Games like Blood Stained, Streets of Rage 4 and Ori are as high tech as I go nowadays and all of them are on Steam so I might as well look towards upgrading my PC going forward. At least if I did that I could take up VR again...
Loved the Nintendo consoles but in generations of late they just cannot be bothered with Metroid, which is the primary reason I purchase a Nintendo console. Appreciated both Federation Force and Samus Returns but they came far too late in the 3DS's life while the Wii-U didn't receive a title at all and still no show for Metroid Prime 4 on the Switch...
...and that was announced back in mid 2017. Considering Wii-U owners were still waiting for a Metroid for that machine, this is really taking the mickey. Also, the Switch isn't exactly a replacement for the DS/3DS...

I'll be buying a PS4. Since I use PC, I only care about consoles for exclusive games and local play, and the minute the PS5 comes out the PS4's prices will be slashed something fierce. Sure, I'll have been the last person on earth to play Bloodborne, but at least it won't cost me five hundred bucks.
I'm pretty sure I read there is a whole development studio working on Metroid at the moment SamusDrake, they had even bought some more office space to bring the extra developers in - so I am sure something will come along (eventually!)

Very true - remember having to turn the PS1 upside down to get it to work when it got hot!
So I was watching some youtube videos and basically the big box stores are all holding onto their xboxes and PS5s now until Black Friday except in maybe a couple of rare cases, in the US anyways. Most of these stores are doing black friday weeks rather than just friday. So here's where I think you'll be able to get them online..
Walmart - Nov 25 7 PM EST Gamestop - Nov 25 8PM CST online and Nov 27 @ 7 AM in stores. Best Buy - Nov 27 5 AM EST Amazon - Nov 27 no time given Target - No dates but they supposedly update their stock levels between 1 & 5 AM so you just gotta check and hope you get lucky. Target isn't giving any info on purpose probably because they don't want their site to crash like walmart.

Managed to score a PS5 bundle from Khol's last night .. so far they had the best launch, lasted a good 20-30 minutes before it sold out. Was hoping for Xbox, but they only had PS5, guess I'm switching
Xbox was on Best Buy this morning at around 7 Am, but I missed it. Think I'm done.
Yeah. The joke is, they aren't kidding.
I increasingly feel like I took a wrong turn somewhere and ended up in an alternate reality, and its primary element is pure, unrefined stupidity.
There's so many things wrong with this. I foresee several lawsuits involving food poisoning (idiots leaving food inside for days) and/or fires (grease + hot electronics).

None of them. Hardware is so 2010's - cloud gaming is where its going to be at in the 2020's
"The larger point though, is that as players, we have more control over what the game looks and feels like than most of us are willing to use in order to solve our own problems"
More than likely I will stick with Sony but it will depend on one big thing for me.
I have my PS4 specifically for certain racing games, and I have a decent enough Logitech wheel/pedal setup. I'm waiting partially to see if the backwards compatibility thing is true for hardware accessories as well as games, and partially for, as others have mentioned, the 2nd run/upgrade/fixes come out a bit later.
If I tried moving my wheel and full setup over to PC, well, that's a rabbit hole I just dont need on top of other expensive hobbies.
