How do!

Just watching the original Red Dawn for the first time, and the opening scenes are amazing. Straight into the action. With a distinct war crime no less. And the action doesn’t exactly let up. Suffice to say, I can see why this is a well respected classic (and yes, shame on me for only just discovering it).

And y’know? Such an opening could seriously work for a Terminator TV series set from the beginning of the war to man’s victory over Skynet.

I mean, we see US kids be pretty sensible. Head out to one of their parent’s shops, arm up and grab provisions, before hiding in the hills. And there’s a pretty quick deciding on a power structure within their group - which is ultimately necessary for the situation.

Mix it up a bit with Walking Dead style tropes (no-one is safe, outsiders require caution).

Whaddya think, Dakka? Is this a good idea, or is it off to the Idiot Corner with me (again)

I think modern TV shows might work better than back in the day, but you still have the issue of the war being as much or more unsexy attrition and logistics as sexy guerilla tactics. The kinds of things TV writers would want to include would be the kinds of things to break immersion for an audience.

A Protoss colony world

Funnily enough, I've had a nugget of an idea along these lines myself, only instead of Russians or Terminators, have it be some kind of alien invasion. The story would start with the initial attacks, the aliens levelling most major cities and the main protagonists being a bunch of scruffy teens who decide to take the fight to the invaders instead of just sitting out the war hiding in a cave or something.

The thing that has mainly stopped me from going ahead and starting a rough draft is that people will probably start reading it, realize it's just Red Dawn with aliens, and lose interest.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

Pretty sure Red Dawn with aliens has already been done quite a few times in the form of books, comics, tv, and also film. Probably also video games.

Right off the top of my head is Falling Skies, a pretty decent 'red dawn but alliens' story that (or so I'm told) got worse as the seasons stretched on.

Every idea has been done before. What matters is the execution.
