DV8: I've never seen anyone attempt a bust of the Queen before. Having seen this, I don't think I want to see another - everything about your work is just right. Kudos, for a lovely rendition of Her Majesty.
Cheers! She was a fun quick little piece to work on, in particular the dress. It was a neat emulating the almost oyster-pearl satin dress she had.
JoshInJapan wrote:
DV8: Outstanding work on the cloth and the diamonds. She looks a little walleyed, though.
Haha probably! The scale really threw me off and honestly, from some angles yea she does look walleyed. I tried a few iterations and this was like..the 3rd or 4th where I was like...eh good enough
Arakasi wrote:
DV8 - Queen Elizabeth - Not sure I'm qualified to comment . If I had to nitpick, the shadows around the necklace appear quite strong, and I'm not sure what material the crown is meant to be with its bluish tinge?
It's supposed to be diamonds, but the actual cast of the piece (her necklace particularly) were just awful. Partially the sculpt, partially also the scale. I would not want to paint this piece again because those parts were just so horrid and poorly defined.
Tyranid Horde wrote:
DV8: Every month is always a treat and this bust is yet another example of your skill. The queen isn't my favourite, but nonetheless an excellent job.
Cheers! I liked everything about this bust except the jewelry, and honestly all I really wanted to paint was that dress, just to capture as much of the color nuance as I can but it's super subtle. I don't even think the camera picks up on all of it.
feltmonkey wrote:
DV8 - Yep, that's certainly the Queen. My anti-monarchist sentiments battled my appreciation for the paintjob as I decided whether or not to vote for it. Appreciation for the painting won.
Haha I mean, I am Canadian so gotta rep the Crown just a little bit, y'know? Commonwealth represent!

Great entries all!
Thanks to the folks who took the time to comment, it goes to show that time invested in details like stripey pants or a couple glaze layers on goggles makes a difference (thanks for noticing!).
As for the trukk my orks belong to, if you're curious, please check it out here (it's finally finished!):

Kudos to you guys (Arakasi, Tyranid Horde and Feltmonkey) for writing comments on all the entries.
Feltmonkey
I can see where you've struggled a bit with the dodgy details on some of the minis, like the hands and feet. They belong to a certain school of miniature design that involves huge hands and feet, like the older GW minis. I quite like the look, really.
Good eye Felt. The casts are not the best, mistakes on the faces, hands and feet are visible. Thanks Feltmonkey.
I voted for the following entrants:
Tyranid Horde
MobileSuitRandom
queen_annes_revenge
Paradigm
Ezki
JoshInJapan
maxwin
Chris56

Thanks again for every vote, comment and thanks to Nevelon for the challenge !

Thank you for the comments and compliments!
JoshInJapan wrote:
Ezki: Wow, so much to look at on this model. I like how your weathering emphasizes all the different textures on the armor plates.
Thank you JoshInJapan. I was afraid that the hull would look too flat, as I did not want to do much highlighting on this model. Glad it worked out with weathering.
Blackie wrote:I voted for Ezki's Stompa. It's a model I'm not very fond of but this specific one looks absolutely great. Plus the Stompa is huge so painting it with such a high standard and attention to details is very hard work.
Thank you! I was not the biggest fan of the sculpt either. While working on it though, it kind of started to grow on me and now I quite like it
Arakasi wrote:
Ezki - Stompa - After drilling those barrels, you have left me nothing to nitpick. An impressive miniature to complete in a month, and nicely done.
Haha, it was a worthy nitpick! Thanks Arakasi.
Tyranid Horde wrote:
Ezki: Obviously a standout this month, the weathering is fantastic although I'd love to see what you could do with some oil streaking or enamels.
Thank you TH! Someone else also suggested trying out enamels (they actually thought this was done using them). I think I should give them a shot.
feltmonkey wrote:Ezki - A really good, weathered Stompa. Impressive to get such a model finished in a month. The rust effects are superb. Did you use some kind of paint-chipping method?
Thanks feltmonkey. I used liquid mask for the paint chipping. It's something I've never tried before, but I have seen done in scale modelling. I realized that I had some mask from the grav tank canopy project, and had to give it a shot.
The chipped parts were painted with rust colors first (metal base coat, wash, sponging different browns), covered the areas I wanted the chipping at with liquid mask and painted the whole area with the desired color. After that, the mask was removed by wiping with a cloth and scratching with a mold line remover tool.

JoshInJapan wrote:That's some pretty impressive color matching on your paint job. Are you planning to go back and do more detailing?
Thank you, I was pleased with how well the colours came together. I did order some waterslide transfers to add some markings, but they got caught on the wrong side of the Christmas post. Following the suggestions below I think I'll go back and add some panel lining later as well.
Arakasi wrote:Mostly neatly painted (some green appears to have escaped in a few places), but very plain. Not sure what else I can add.
feltmonkey wrote:We don't get many Gundam models in here, so it's nice to see one. You've done a neat job. I'm personally not a fan of the flat colours you get in Gundam, it makes them look like toys. A bit of black lining on the recesses might make all the difference, but it depends what look you're going for.
Tyranid Horde wrote:A cool entry! I find Gundam really benefit from stark panel lining and if you picked up some enamel panel liners you'd see them go a long way!
Thanks, and fair comments all round. The SD line of Gundam kits are quite cartoony and are definitely the most toy-like of the range. I considered doing some edge highlighting since it's not that much bigger than a 40K dreadnought, but I didn't have time and to be honest my edge highlighting technique isn't great. I agree panel lining is the way to go.
Since I haven't commented much in the recent Painting Challenge threads, I thought I'd do a comment for everyone this time.
Nevelon – A crisp white with some nice spot colours for contrast.
Rybrook – Very neat paintwork, and I like that shade of red.
Tyranid Horde – Another nice red, and very smoothly painted.
Jamie Shred – More red! Good detail on the interior. Was the red painted with contrast paints?
MobileSuitRandom – The freehand floral pattern on the skirt is really good.
queen_annes_revenge – Really excellent. Colour choices, paintwork, everything.
Captain Brown – That is an immaculate white, and I like the fluttering banners.
E3DD – The individual images are a little small to judge by, but it looks like a solid paint job.
Paradigm – This has a worn and weathered feel that suits the model well.
Vejut – Which range are these amazon orcs from? The freehand on the shields is well done.
ZergSmasher – I like the pale green on the staff and beads, it looks like jade.
Ezki – The weathering on this is really good. It's worn and rusty whilst still being colourful.
Yorkright – A classic colourscheme done well.
YoshInJapan – These are very smoothly painted, and it's interesting to see Harlies in more subdued colours.
Arakasi – Nice and bright.
Freya – Very good lighting effect, it almost looks like it's UV lit.
maxwin – The NMM on that sword is beautiful.
straken619 – Simple and bold, I think these will look good as an army.
CREEEEEEEEED – An interesting colour scheme. Is it meant to be a flesh-and-bone Necron?
Pariah Press – I like the patterned trousers on the bard. I think the armour and skin colours on the warrior blend together too much though.
MangoChutney – A striking scheme, I like the blue fading to white on the wings.
Gulgog TufToof – Solid Orks with some nice splashes of colour.
Chris56 – Good vignette. I like the wood grain on the base and the squig escaping from the box.
DV8 – Top tier. The skin tones and the shading on the cloth are excellent.
ShadowsAndDust – He's nice and colourful. Is the model stock or a conversion?
Warpig1815 – That's some very realistic snow. I like the realistic colours and the composition of the figures as well.
Maharg – Very neatly painted. How did you do the blue-black effect on the plume?
Modock – The shading is smooth and the freehand designs on the clothing are great.
Dukeofbeer – He's good. I assume the base is supposed to be snow, but it looks a little plain nonetheless.
Feltmonkey – The pages in the book are very good, and I like the glowing green bits.
Viterbi – I think the lightsabre glow works better on Vader than on Luke. Good black tones on both though.
Midget Gems – A cool conversion, and an unusual orange on the squig.
Deadshot – My only niggle would be that the shading at the bottom of the robes looks a little heavy. Smooth otherwise.

JoshInJapan - Harlequins - I like the dark take on harelquins, your foray into NMM looks very promising. These were unlucky to not meet my voting cut.
I don't think anyone would object to your changing your standards if doing so resulted in more votes for me.
Jamie Shred wrote:Thanks for the feedback JoshinJapan and Arakasi, constructive is always the best kind and i dont disagree with any of your comments. I felt the large panels needed something to help them pop and went for dry brushed highlights where maybe focussed washes to darken the inner areas may have been a better option? Interested to your thoughts on you would have done it as i haven't painted many tanks or large models in general so still learning.
I don't paint a lot of vehicles, but from my "research" into scale modeling, the pros seem to focus more on weathering and lining than the highlighting/shading that are commonly done with gaming pieces.
Tyranid Horde wrote:
JoshInJapan: A good take on these Harlies, I like the darker palette used and you've executed it well.
Thanks. I had originally meant to do them in brighter colors, but I seem incapable of that these days.

Panel lining would help a lot, I think. Gundam modelling is pretty big here, much bigger than the wargaming stuff you see here on Dakka, and the serious modellers produce some amazing things.

So the problem with the 9th Gate sculpts (and I don't know if the Proof pic clearly shows this), but the pupils are sculpted, as in they're divoted into the eyeball. I did not think this would be a problem until I had primed and painted her, and there's only so much you can do if they do a garbage job of the sculpt. I have another Queen Elizabeth sculpt from them that I'm definitely going to have to correct whenever I get around to painting her.

<Sigh> You guys really making me work with the write up this month. Incredibly tight competition. Starting off with a 3-way tie for 3rd, with 29 votes each.
Warpig1815’s amazing diorama filled with amazing detail:
Blood on the Ice: Prussia, 1242
Ronin might be samurai without masters, but they have been painted masterfully by Modock:
feltmonkey’s amazing work with Bastian Oriel rounds out this podium. From the detail of the book, to the glowing crystals, he’s earned his spot here.
Moving up to silver, we have a two way tie, 33 votes each.
queen_annes_revenge with Magistus Amon. QAR continues to deliver the quality this month, with a 1k sons’s sorcerer.
But hot on his heals is Paradigm with The Mandolorian. I wonder if he has a bounty puck for the heretic?
Edging out both of them by a single vote, Ezki stomps to victory! You need to respect the madness of the mechboy to bring a Stompa to the table, crammed full of detail and weathering.
As always, amazing work everyone. Not just for the packed podium winners, but everyone who participated. We continue to grow and get stronger as painters, and it shows every month. If you haven’t already, toss your hat into the ring for January, where that’s the theme.

So thrilled to make the top 3 (... err, 6!), especially alongside such inspirational painters whose work is vastly better than my own. It''s been a crappy year for me in terms of painting while my eyesight has been getting by turns better and worse, so to cap it off with a podium finish on a model I learned so much on is genuinely momentous for me.
Well done to everyone else, such a strong standard this month.
