Hello all! So I'm a long time 40k player who always loved old fantasy.
I have a few questions before I take the plunge getting into AOS
Is it still alive and growing as a game?
Also I love vampires and the rumor is a whole redo of the army is that true?
Can I just go legions of Nagash and add the new vamps later? Not sure how force org works in AOS.
Thanks for your help.

Barring Corona being a mess, yes AoS is growing and in a big way in most regions! I would say you'd have to ask at your local game groups/stores to find out what its like in your area, but in general since the launch of 2.0 edition a few years back, AoS has gone from strength to strength.
As for armies right now there's basically three levels of army organisation
1) Grand Alliance. This is basically everything within a Grand Alliance. You can take whatever you want, but you're basically just getting the units with their base stats and any universal rules. You're not getting army specific ones and the GA books themselves are old.
GA armies are mostly there as a fun option, but a generally not really used outside of fun games
2) Armies. These have their own tab within a Grand Alliance on the GW store page and their own Battletome (just like a codex). Within that they've everything they need from spells to army equipment, battallions and all.
These armies can take up to 1/5th in points and unit count as allies. These allies are specified at the end of their tome (on the page with the points). Some armies can ally with a lot, others can't ally with any other forces. The allies will generally always be in the same Grand Alliance.
3) Subfactions. These are contained within the battletomes noted above, but might limit you to specific units and builds. Cities of Sigmar make extensive use of these for that purpose; however other armies also have subfactions too. Eg Skaven has one for each of the major clans and the one for Pestilens can even take Nurgle allies.
In general these are your subfactions like for 40K; some are focused on a tactical angle (eg better for ranged or close combat fighting); others have unit limits and such.
Otherwise army composition is pretty simple, each point value has a set number of leaders and battleline troops you need to take; thereafter there's upper limits for leaders, artillery and monstrous creatures (noting that some units will be in more than one category at once). There's no limit on how many troops you can take.
The Warscroll Builder on the GW website is a great little tool that lets you see the armies and limits
https://www.warhammer-community.com/warscroll-builder/
Top left click the point value to change it to different amounts.
As for Vampires there 100% is something coming for them. Right now they are getting an Underworld warband and there's 2 previewed models for the army itself (A lord and a Wight King on mount). However as they've only teased out these details we don't expect the army to be very soon - we are talking several months perhaps more until they appear.
That said some legions of nagash models in finecast are already sold out on the website.
Legions of Nagash does cross over units with most of the other Death Armies, however specifically what is and isn't going into the Vampire army is as yet unknown.
You could build some of the core of a LoN army and certainly expect some of the more vampiric units to cross over to a vampire force.

Time frame for shown stuff is within 3 month. So by may vampire and wight king should be out. That's best we can tell for timing

GW's timeframe is normally 3 months, which is why they've not previewed the new Vampire army the same way. It was "leaked" as such and I suspect goes beyond the normal 3 month window as a result of that.

Yes but I figure they weren't ready, however the Underworld Warband couldn't be delayed. Things are out of sync at present. So they teased us when the warband dropped to let us know that "yes vampires are coming but not soon"

Awesome, thanks for the info. I really love the age of sigmar models better then 40k and that's what drew me to the game first and foremost. Also I think its more simplified of a game where I can play with my sons and wife easier then 40 k.

If you like more feral vampires, you could play Flesh Eater Courts. They're pretty straight forward to play, great lore, and dirt cheap to build.

Another 40k player planning to try AoS.
How much of the Legions of Nagash stuff is outdated? I like the corpse cart model especially but it seems kinda old. I have an idea of an army of vampire lords, skeletons, corpse carts, zombies etc. in my head so I guess Legions of Nagash would be the army for me?

As noted above the upcoming big vampire release is puttting the whole army into flux. Several of the models are already sold out and gone from the GW store. Anything finecast or old plastic is up to be dropped. Corpse Cart might remain or might go its hard to say. It might also go but be replaced with something or go entirely. My gut feeling is its new enough that it might survive, but GW can be VERY hard to predict in these cases as to what goes and what stays.
I would say if there's anything you really like and want to own get it now from the Legions of Nagash. Otherwise wait and see what the Vampires bring with them and where the dust settles. However it could be several months off At the very least a solid 3 months if not more.

Vampires as a whole are currently in the middle of an update that we really don’t know much about sadly.
GW has been less and less consistent in recent times of what gets updated and how.
It really is a gamble if you want to buy anything now, but the safest bets are going for the newest plastic kits in the range.
I can honestly see things like zombies being changed.
A lot of finecast will either vanish or get replaced etc.
Kind of hoping new blood knights are on the cards as it would be printing money for them.

Then again you are easily looking at 75£ for 5 then Flip side of getting new models. Price hike compared to last.

Regardless of how the upcoming Soulblight release goes, you will be able to build an army like that. So while it may be wise to hold off on a battletome for a month, I encourage you to start building the army up!

Rather than start a new topic, I did mention it in the rumour thread, but that perhaps gets too busy.
I’m thinking of converting my fantasy army over to AoS.
I was going to look at those square to round converters for the bases, rather than pulling it all off.
I’m ideally looking for some STL files so they can be printed off easily, so all the different base size conversions etc.
Though I suppose potentially I could look at buying pre mad from a company or whatever, but I looked at some for my ogres and it was about £15 for 10..
I saw one on Thingiverse, but they weren’t right, as the corners of the squares still came out, making a weird 8 pointed star where 4 points are curved..

The corners will stick out for most miniatures. Only ones that got considerable base size increases will be able to put it off without that.

If you overlay a 25mm square on a 25mm or 32mm round, you get that shape. As Musketeer points out, it doesn't really work unless there was a considerable jump(25mm square to 40mm round for example). You're better off clipping the square base and redoing it entirely if you're not planning to keep them usable for a square base game.

Due to the sloped edges of GW bases, one can trim the corners down without impacting the flat basing surface, so that could be an option.

Likely still a far of project, so I guess it doesn’t matter too much, just thought base converters might spur me on a bit

Also, if you're not heading to tourneys? Just check with the people you'll be playing with. It might be that they don't care what shape/size your bases are & re-basing/clipping/base converters etc won't be needed.
This is what we have locally. There's a bunch of us with existing WHFB armies playing AoS with our square & rectangular bases and mixing in new stuff on round/ovals. Works fine. Also makes it easy to go back & play WHFB when the mood strikes.
