These Men at Arms are great, love the mix of pieces. Once painted with some unifying colours I'm sure it will be awesome.

EDIT: Whoops, turned the page on you. Look at the previous page everyone, its really cool!

Welcome back!

Still super cold here, so it's been a building marathon, followed by a basing marathon (Because I'm a build and base then prime person).

But first - a tentative list I am building to. With this being a full army project, I've pretty much bought to what I want, although those new wizards tempt me. So here's the list (2k)

Baron on Royal Pegasus
Damsel Lvl 2 (On Horse)
Paladin (Bannerwoman on Horse)
Paladin (On Foot)

6 Knights of the Realm
6 Knights of the Realm
12 Bowmen
24 Yeomen Guard
16 Knights of the Realm on Foot

3 Pegasus Knights

20 Border Prince Brigands (Crossbows, shields, close order to represent the besiegers)
1 Trebuchet
1 Bombard

Anyways, onto pictures!

Characters

Two damsels, another extra potential wizard, trebuchet crew too (I have to put the 3d print of the trebuchet itself in a warm water bath because it has warped somehow in storage)

You can see the basing theme I have for the artillery - I'll put some balsawood boards down to represent them trying to level the ground - some former empire engineer is telling them things.

Foot knights now

I'm trying to stretch this unit a bit larger than it is - I have 16 guys to play with but would love to sneak it up to 24 somehow. I'll have to play with my bits box a lot. Might use a 3D print or two to stretch the minis.

Finally a family shot.
Spoiler:

Current progress minus characters. The Pegasus knights are built but they're nothing different than usual so they aren't included here. Should get my bombard today in the main plus another knight or two. Would love thoughts on the list and building!

Keep on constructing!

Thanks Warboss!

I was hoping to nab the new Bret Character today, even if just to add him to the footknights and get an additional footknight model out of him, but as per usual, he was scooped up super fast. Annoying!

The goal today is to finish the footknights, then maybe start on the Duke himself. Plus I've got that reaver that needs magnetizing in the wings...

Good progress with the army building, coming together very nicely. Cool additions with unit fillers they all add a good bit of flavour to the units. Fingers crossed that you get some better weather to get them primed .

Alright - I'm definitely close to being able to prime this week (Huzzah) but in the meantime, I have actually been...well... building.

First up, reinforcements for the Exile army.
Pre Basing

Post Basing

Up close of the Unit Filler

So I turned a unit of 16 back into a unit of 20. Cool beans. But wait I turned out some other cool goodies. The bois need a place to hang out.

So it is a bit small but I'm sure it is fine. There are bunk beds, right?

Plus, we needed the big gun since the trebuchet is out of commission. The Baron hires only the best (and only) available bombard.

It's a bit on the wimpy side, but I actually like it more that way. Not cartoonishly huge. You can actually see the basing for the pegasus knights in the background as well.

In preparation for priming, I tried to gather all the army together.

I think I'll need a bigger board! Keep on building!

Yea, that may have helped me pull the trigger to build my 'kid Blockade wanted this' army.

Captain Brown wrote:Interesting idea to expand your units with some square terrain blockade23. - CB

Thanks CB. Honestly, the Unit fillers are a super unique style thing for the Old World versus all other GW lines. No little token-y thing from the Eldar line, but this lets you really build in a scenic 'base' that isn't a base that has purpose and includes elements from the army. I won't lie, I definitely got more unit fillers than necessary but hey they're always 'scatter terrain' in a pinch.

Got everything but the Baron primed yesterday, so now starting to work on the Dakka painting goal of the month (Ho boy, a lot of archers to paint!

I finished a dakka painting challenge (a cheap unit) and also made progress on my first unit for my Bretonnian army.

Pre-basing

After basing and remembering that I had one more test model to add to the group.

I'll write up a little blurb on the bois when I finish the whole unit. Lots of layering on these guys which I could probably reduce but I really enjoy the process and I think they're better than a lot of my other recent things.

Well, it's the first week of February, and I've slogged through the remainder of the Peasant bowmen.

Allow me to introduce Verluckan Scioparto's Long Feather Bowmen in all their 'glory'.

Scioparto's Long Feather Bowmen are the first reserves to be activated and marshalled into Lord Leinad's Army. While the knights enjoy the last few comforts of home, these moderately capable bowmen, armed with the best bows their grandfathers could buy, have assembled under the aged, lucky symbol of the Grey Crane. Scioparto himself, once a moderately capable yeomen, was given the honor of turning the rag tag group of farmers into flak, and he knows it. Suitably armored not for the enemy, but for the not insignificant chance of getting shot by his own men, he spends most of battle exhorting his men to shoot 'arrz' faster. Accompanied by his mustachioed banner bearer, Lorence, and the balding, but not bad, drummer Melox, Scioparto's goal is simply to make it home to his six children and second wife alive.

Command Group

If you've already been over to the Dakka Painting challenge, you'll see that this month I'm working on a sneaky bombard for the Brets.

Unfortunately after building I noticed that the crew are just a little tall. So half giants crew the cannon, so what? It's already a mercenary piece!
I do need ideas on a third splash color for the mercenaries like the bombard crew and the crossbowmen. I'm already going traditional-ish gold armor for Borganzinos' Besiegers, but that wouldn't look good on cloth when another color is already cream. Unless people thinkg yellow + cream + teal blue works? Thoughts?

@Usern - Yea I tried to paint some eye sockets on the bandaged nose man but they looked a little wonky. Settled for really being targeted (hah) with washes.

@Gobert - thanks! It's (hilariously) a mix of flock, and mulling wine spice plus chai tea.

@Tommy - thanks! I struggle in this 'what scheme to paint them' as I already have a Blue & gold thousand sons army, grey blue Guard, Purple guard, black and white space marines, red chaos guard, blue and yellow Genestealer Cult, Blue and yellow Eldar.... And Green is evidently a no no for Brets, so I was like ugh... Running out of color options and I did not want an orange army. This was one of the more 'not what I have but also not painting tons of white' schemes.

Yup, the name of the post says it all.

Built up and painted the Bombard! Huzzah! I really worked harder at layering my paints this go around as I wanted to take advantage of some slightly bigger models to just practice wet blending using my new wet palette. Did I do better? I think so. C&C always welcome of course, but my style (according to other people, I just try to layer paint) is the cell shaded look. (Shrug). I purposefully added purple in here to distinguish the more mercenary components of the army from the standard guys. However I really like the look and am going to use it as a splash color and part of the knight heraldry in some way. I think the cooler blue and purple tones work with the warmer / yellowish cream colors.

Anywho, here is Clipen's Culvern Crew.

Hired by Lord Leinad when his trebuchet crew used unseasoned wood to construct their siege equipment, "Captain" Clipen's crew are all hand picked men (and one woman) of a certain stature. Only selecting persons over six feet tall ensures that the culvern can be moved around even without draft horses in a pinch. Clipen himself studied at the academy in Nuln before a disagreement over the proper length of a cannon led to his departure. Now making his living in the Border Princes, Calvert Clipen looks to make a name for himself and his newer, lighter, 'quick bombard.'

A full size one of the crew.

Hope you enjoy them! I'll have to post them in the painting challenge thread as well.

Also, because I'm pushing myself here, here's the rest of February and March's goal. 20 Crossbowmen and 6 Knights (You know, the point of a Bretonnian Army)

Progress is being made team!

While I have some updates on the crossbowmen (and it isn't very superb to look at) I think my test knight of the realm is looking pretty good so far. Figuring out which layers to do first is truly the challenging part.

Obviously need some more layers to smooth out the brush strokes, but so far so good. Considering I want to finish painting his squad by the end of the month I have some time, but I'm doing okay on it overall.

Another speedy update. I snuck in some hobby time today and finished one knight. So huzzah! Proof of concept and all that.

Forgive the dust, it's just flock I forgot to blow off.

I really like this scheme. I tried to ensure that the top surfaces were brighter and benefited from that zenethial highlight. I haven't done transfers (and likely won't until the end) as I'm not sure whether I want to use GWs or a 3rd party.

Now only 5 knights and 20 crossbowmen to go by the end of March.

Keep on building!

Been a busy week, but I've managed to complete the Knights of the Realm Bannerman. That being said, I also now feel confident batch painting the remainder of the squad. So good progress has been made!

Once again, I'm not doing decals until the very end because I haven't decided on them yet. This bad boy was flocked as well, but the best lit glamor shots were done before that stage.

I used some of Duncan' Rhodes painting ideas here, but I really was trying to keep the darker areas 'in shadow' especially with the banner. I'm pretty pleased with how it came out. The heraldry shield areas look either great or janky to me, which happens when I don't put down five hundred layers of different paints on them. These had five and I still feel like they don't look amazing in some cases.

Here the two finished knights are as they ride together into my display cabinet. I really am enjoying the purple as a splash color. The lead Knight will have more purple than everyone else to show he's in charge.

Now enjoy a moderately acceptable photo of the other four in progress.

The one with the antlers is my leader, and I realized I used gold for all their helmet toppers except for the musician (the one with the falcon who has a sneaky horn hidden under his arm) so I'll have to make his helmet gold as well to make it match. The other squad will also use purple but have silver toppers to better connect as well since I'm not going to add yet another splash color. You can see the variation of the heraldic fields here on their horse's coverings (Insert proper name here). No two knights are alike, but the color scheme ties them together. They also all have blue shields in this case. So the other squad will likely do purple shields but silver helmet toppers. They'll also have their tiny little shields with blue instead of purple like these guys do. I should be able to finish these all by the end of the week, then work on the crossbowmen.

Keep building!
