His base is surprisingly demure. Thought he'd be on some huge rune-y ruins.

I like his belly button, though. You could paint him like he's wearing a crop top!

In case anyone else is looking at this boy and plays Daughters of Khaine in AoS, I did a quick mockup based on the thickness of the base:

I definitely want one as an alternative to the walking boy, not so confident it can be converted to fit on the chariot though.

I think it may just be the camera angle that makes that blood look dodgy.

I have the FW version with the spear. I don't think I'll rebase it or pick this one up. I'll just play with a smaller base.

Yeah although I guess that brighter red made sense to provide more contrast to the dark red body..

Right but what I'm saying is, it is coming from the hand. The gauntlet creates a wide lip at the wrist. So the blood is pooling and then running down the wrist plate. I agree it looks rather goofy at the current angle, but I'm saying I think it probably looks better in the plastic.

The direction of the blood is making it look goofy. It's modeled as though it were a wax candle, running down in vertical lines. And then the droplets falling from the elbow-end of his gauntlet are following the same straight line. It's as though his hand was held straight up while the 'blood' ran down and hardened into place, and then he broke pose.

It's not trailing from his arm in a way that conveys motion. If his arm were more perfectly vertical, they wouldn't look like they were flowing against gravity, but it would still look like an immobile statue.

Yeah, the more I look at it, the less I like it. It's not just boring and underwhelming, a lot of it is bad. The flames look terrible, the blood looks bad. The kneepads look dumb, the armor panels look generic. Aside from the weapon options and the head, I'm not sure there's anything good about it.

I just came up with a rather ambitious hobby project for an unspecified future - take this kit, save all the armour bits and the head but file down every piece of lava body and then resculpt it based on the FW one to look like an actual, fresh rock. And while I'm at it, remove the flames and resculpt the hand and knee caps. Then it will IMHO the ultimate Avatar.

The bare unhelmeted head reminds me a lot of Drukhari Mandrakes...

Wasn't there a rumor about the new Avatar also being able to build an Avatar of another god or something like that? I think it was from the previously debunked rumors, so probably not really relevant, but it raises some questions...

Wonder if this fella will work with AoS Daughters of Khaine. The Avatar they currently have is more of an actual statue that they can make move and fight through the power of prayer or belief, etc. rather than a psychic/daemonic shard of a god made manifest. Then again, IIRC I think the latest fluff is Morathi has killed Khaine and consumed his power or something.

I like most of the model, but GW is really convinced that 'special effects' look a lot better than they actually do as static painted bits.
As concept art for a video game, its got a lot of potential, but flames and blood always look a little funky.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

yeah, it was rumoured to also be Morai Heg but that's not true by the looks of it.

I didn't like the dark reapers much (but will still be getting them), but I love this model. Not sure how others are finding it poor (but subjectivity is a thing).

The only part of the sculpt I don't like is the blood effect on the left hand. Maybe its just the angles or we ae missing a bit of a detail there that isn't photographing well, but it seems like this fountain of blood is just... sprinking forth from thin air near the models wrist rather than pouring out of a wound or just enveloping the models hand like one would expect.

It would certainly be in keeping with GW's traditions if the first new Mandrake character was given to a faction that isn't Dark Eldar.

(Only surprise is that it isn't an Imperial faction getting it.)

They get new rules. A bit stronger and more attacks. No new models though. Appears Dragons, Scorpions and probably Spiders aren't getting revisions with their minis this time around, but we've not seen Spider leaks yet, so anything's possible.

Given their popularity with Eldar players in the last edition, I reckon we'll see a new kit for Kill Team in the days ahead.

The only thing I've seen of Karandras is his name dropped in the scorpion relic biting blade earlier. It says it might be the sister to his biting blade, so it may be that Karandras' weapon has similar stats.

One of those three not getting an update, assuming for now it doesn't happen, is utterly bizarre.

Maybe they were left out because they would be able to do them as standalone releases later and still have them sell. Say two or three battle boxes down the line Eldar can have another go and throw in Karan Das and a set of scorpions, like jain zar and the banshees

Let's be fair, Fire Dragons haven't changed much since their inception. They've had 3 different releases (technically four) and look relatively similar. All of them need a redo, because they should all be plastic, but of the three the Dragons can afford to wait the most.

The Spiders have only ever had one kit. I think they should go first.
